Silva praises Blues after important cup win

Marco Silva was pleased with a job done well at Hillsborough this evening as Everton booked passage to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored twice inside the first 10 minutes and could have had a hat-trick as the Blues eased the pressure on their shoulders and those of the manager following a disappointing start to the Premier League season.

Silva had asked for a big performance from his players, particularly after the 2-0 defeat to the Owls' local rivals Sheffield United at Goodison Park on Saturday, and was rewarded with a more unified and coherent display.

“This word togetherness is really important,” Silva said afterwards. “I asked them to do what we did against Lincoln. We were serious, we respected our goals in the competition like aways and we did the same thing tonight.

“I know that these types of games are risk games for us but we did well. We had fantastic support — more than 4,000 here to support us which is really important. We achieved what we want which is the next round.

Silva made five changes to the team that started against the Blades, two of them, Djibril Sidibé and Alex Iwobi, had been expected but the Portuguese also reinstated Calvert-Lewin to the front line in place of Moise Kean, dropped Gylfi Sigurdsson to the bench to accommodate Iwobi in the No 10 role, swapped Tom Davies for Morgan Schneiderlin and played Mason Holgate instead of Michael Keane.

“The players [who came in] did what I wanted from them. [They] are all important because it's not just 11, 12 or 13 players,” he said. “We have more players with quality. Djibril Sidibé arrived late in our squad but step by step he is showing his quality, but he needs more game to show more quality.

“Mason had a good game also which was important. He finished the game with some physical difficulties but he did well and showed that quality that I know he has but more important, he showed the focus he needs to.”

Silva was asked about Calvert-Lewin who grabbed his chance to shine with both hands, scoring one brilliantly taken effort on the half-volley and then sliding in to convert a poacher's goal after Alex Iwobi had slipped the ball square for him in front of the net.

“It's really important for all strikers [to score goals]. He scored against Bournemouth and unfortunately for us we didn't achieve the points. Tonight he scored twice and we achieved the win and it's really important for him. He needs that to gain more confidence and let's hope he can score again.”

Silva played down the significance of Richarlison's substitution after taking a knock during the game and coming off for Theo Walcott in the second half.

“He's okay; nothing special,” the manager explained. “I made the change because he played the full game last Saturday and Theo is working hard also to get a place. We had to put fresh players on to bring more freshness to our front line.”

This will only make him persist with the same old formation and tactics, a shame really...

Filipe, unfortunately I think you are spot on there, and agree, I see this more as a stay of execution on his part.

When was the last time we were in the last 16? Good news is good news. Clean sheet and a win. Okay, it's against a lower division team but Spurs went out last night and are not having things their own way this season - should Levy sack Pochettino. Of course not.

It's early doors and, though I admit to being really gutted with our start to this season, let's get behind the team and manager on Saturday and see how things go. COYBs!!!

Why not try out two strikers against Man City?

Why worry about them, why not do what Norwich did and try and shock them by taking proceedings to them?

I can't see the benefits in having Schneiderlin sitting next to Delph and whilst much clamour has been here for Davies, he's another really who moves too slowly and seems to do everything in slow motion.

I'd be bold, partner Kean next to Calvert-Lewin and play Iwobi behind them.

Bernard and Richarlison coming in from wide area's and, if Gomes is fit, use him next to Delph or sit Sigurdsson next to Delph as he can pass a ball and is always savvy for a long-range howitzer against the big teams.

Might even be so bold to say to Coleman “Do you know what, mate, we love you but you've got serious competition now” and start Djibril Sidibe.

I went to this game. Yes, we got the early goals and that settles us but it was a very scrappy game. Not a lot of fluidity, and have the ball away a lot. Cracks papered over slightly, but they are still straining under the weight of pressure.

I still think this man and Brands can do it for us. I was furious after Bournemouth and Sheffield United but we need to hold our nerve.

Anyway, let's hope for courage and a bit of style on Saturday.

Jim #5 I'd go with that. Attack them and see how many we can score because we are unlikely to keep a clean sheet. DCL did well last night and he looks like his confidence is high. Give him Moise in support and the crowd will get behind them. May as well give it a go and if we lose go down with some glory.

Dave/Jim, which position would you leave out for the two strikers?

I think Iwobi, Delph and Gomes are going to be massive for us this season.
I'd like to see Iwobi given a run now instead of Siggy.
And Calvert Lewin should be first choice striker until, or even when, Kean is ready.
He's learning all the time and will get run of goals given service.
I was fuming after Saturday but can see glimmers of hope - not because of tonight's result - but because of the players that can come in, such as Gomes, Iwobi and Sidibe.

Clive

I'd go with

Pickford
Sidibe
Mina
Keane
Digne
Delph
Sigurdsson
Iwobi
Bernard
Kean
DCL

I'd bring Richarlion in if needed, he's not been looking that at it at times and looks petulant and moody, a more useful impact from the bench than Bernard however?

Jim, with just Delph and Siggy in mf we may get overrun. May be ok at home to a lesser side.

Even if we flood the middle with Schneiderlin, Davies and Delph it still won't be enough to repel City, as none of the three are particularly quick or athletic players.

As for City, they see so much of the ball that they'd wear us down eventually anyway.

I say give them something to worry about.

Although not his biggest fan I was delighted to see DCL score twice 2 very good goals, and for strikers goals breed confidence. Our there still problems with our players and our set up yes undoubtedly, but for now lets enjoy the fact the we did our job professionally and are through to the next round.

I agree. If we play our usual line up we will have a midfield of spectators watching City tear us apart. Monte Carlo or bust we can't contain city and hope for a clean sheet

Stan Schofield

City might tear us apart, but I doubt it. It's down to us how we play, and on our day we can compete with anyone, as evidenced by much of last season. We're so inconsistent, we could turn in a fluid performance and beat City.

Whilst not exactly setting the world alight this year, Sigurdsson showed how vital he was against the better teams last season. For this game I would start with Schniederlin and Sigurdsson again at the expense of Davies and Iwobi.

This is going to be a game where the midfield unit of 4 (Richarlison and Bernard included here) stays compact and forces mistakes, while Sigurdsson and Calvert-Lewin press them into mistakes. This plays to both Schniederlin and Sigurdssons strengths.

We proved last season that this works against the better sides, the reason the aforementioned look shite this season is because it doesn't work against poorer defensive sides.

Jim, why not use silva Estoril tactics and play:

Richarlison Calvert-Lewin
Delph Iwobi Davies
Schniederlin
Digne Mina Keane sidibe
Pickford

Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin are instructed to run wide and create space for Iwobi to come into. He's better doing this than the slower Sigurdsson. Schneiderlin is the only pure holding midfielder we have. Davies has more energy than an unfit Gomes. Mina and Keane would be fine as we'd defend deep. Therefore we would need two attacking fullbacks to get forwards on the counter. Which makes Schneiderlins involvement essential.

I would play a 3-5-2 against City and look to defend just in front of the box and hit them on the break.

Pickford

Holgate Kean Mina

Sidibe Davies/(Siggy) Delph Iwobi Digne

Richy DCL

You just won't give up on Schneiderlin, Steve, and I'm wondering if it's because of his energy, his commitment, the way he drives others forward, or just because he fills a hole?

Steve (18) – Really like the look and sound of that. I've generally been scathing about Schneiderlin, but ironically his lack of mobility and pace should suit this system and could liberate some of his team-mates to attack with greater purpose on a longer leash. We need to be able to have more than just one central striker in the box when we are attacking.

What seems clear is that we do not presently have the personnel available to make 4-2-3-1 work well.

For certain we need to be direct against City as there is no way we can outplay them in midfield currently.
The threat of DCL against a defence that can be shaky on crosses is the best way forward.
Hopefully his hold up play will also help when we are under pressure.

Playing someone who stands around doing very little whether it's part of a plan or not against the best footballing side in the League does not fill me with any confidence.
Dave Abrahams
29 Posted 26/09/2019 at 16:53:55
Alan (27), talking about players who stand around doing very little, how about paying two players who haven't started a match this season, for any of the teams this season as far as I know, in Martina and Niasse, I presume they are still with the club, still getting paid, and don't have to even strip off and play. What is the situation with these two players. I would definitely use Niasse with the first team.
Alan J Thompson
30 Posted 26/09/2019 at 17:23:06
Dave (29); I don't know about Martina as we probably have enough full-backs and central defenders above him in the pecking order. However, Niasse as nuisance value who gives everything and finds the occasional goal there could be a chance but only to run himself to a standstill then subbed for someone similar as we hang on for a 1-0 win, 2nd minute penalty. Yeah, if only

Dave and Alan, yep, Cuco is still with the club. He made one appearance for the U23s back in August.

Dave, you wouldn't really rather see him in there than Sidibe?

Dave Abrahams
32 Posted 26/09/2019 at 18:22:39
Mike (31), No Mike, seen enough of him when he played to last me a lifetime, Niasse ? Yes.

I was just wondering why these two players are still on the books and not being utilised in any way.

I've a good idea why Martina is still here, it's his last season with the club and he has been offered to other clubs but him and his agent ( if he's got one) have realised they will not get an offer that is anywhere near the money he is getting at Everton.

I think it was you Mike who told me he was on £30,000 per week. Mike, the great train robbers of the early sixties got thirty years jail sentences for a lot less ( each) than Martina has robbed off Everton since Koeman sneaked him into the club.

Mike Gaynes
33 Posted 26/09/2019 at 20:02:33
Dave #32, actually he's on 㿏,000/week.

However, I'm going to disagree with your characterization of Cuco. He hasn't robbed anybody. He accepted an offer to resurrect his derailed career and play for a manager he respected at a wonderful salary. Obviously the offer was idiotic (and many of us thought so at the time), but that's not Cuco's fault.

All you can expect of a player in exchange for his salary is that every minute of every game he gives his absolute 100% best. Cuco did that, mostly playing out of position. He's not very good, but he put it all out there. And sometimes it was good enough -- he had some decent games.

I also got a look at his character this summer at the Gold Cup when he was an inspirational captain for Curacao and led them to their finest international performance ever, reaching the quarterfinals before losing just 1-0 to the US.

Martina may be vastly overpaid for his talents, but he is no robber.

Stan Schofield
34 Posted 26/09/2019 at 20:14:28
Mike, spot on. I don't know anybody who would say to an employer that they're overpaid for what they do. But I know lots who'd say they're underpaid.
Steve Ferns
35 Posted 26/09/2019 at 20:18:36
Can't complain too much about Martina or Niasse. They gave 100% but were ultimately not good enough.

The opposite is someone like Drenthe or Van Der Meyde. Moyes was right to gamble on the pair (first was only a loan anyway) as they could have rediscovered their best form and resurrected their careers and at the time we had to gamble on such players. However, neither were 100% committed and so you can complain about them stealing a living.

Dave Abrahams
36 Posted 26/09/2019 at 20:41:31
Mike (33), morally he's a robber to me, and his 100% absolute best would rate a minus score off me, in his best position or otherwise, Mike, he could only respect Koeman? Told you he was a fraud, he should have idolised him and kissed the floor he walked on.

Steve (35), you can't complain too much about Martina? Leave him to me Steve, I'll do it for you, no charge, to be honest Martina always puts me in a good mood and makes me smile, just thinking about the throw ins he took.

Mike Gaynes
37 Posted 26/09/2019 at 21:45:38
Dave #36, so he should have rejected the offer from the club? Maybe said, "thanks, Ronald, but I'm not good enough and my family doesn't need the money."? Or he should have refunded his salary? Makes no sense. Why are you angrier than the guy who signed his paychecks?

Put the blame where it belongs, my friend, on Koeman not Cuco. As Steve points out, we've paid a lot more to a lot worse.

Dave Abrahams
38 Posted 26/09/2019 at 21:54:00
Mike, (37), angry? Didn't you read my post, Martina makes me smile, relax Mike, we've got more to worry about, at the moment, than why Martina is still here.

Kevin @17, on current form Sigurdsson should be no-where near the first 11.
Kevin Prytherch
40 Posted 27/09/2019 at 09:44:03
Annika - I agree that on form he shouldn't be there. However we've proved time and time again that we can't play with the same players and the same formation against teams that sit back. It just doesn't suit Sigurdsson's game. It's no coincidence that our best spells as a team against Bournemouth where when we were drawing both times and they attacked us, it plays into our usual system.

Sigurdsson proved last year how vital he is against teams who look to attack us, him and Calvert-Lewin do a lot of work instigating a highly press which is backed up by the midfield. I would start him against the better teams, but leave him out against crap teams.

Trevor Peers
41 Posted 27/09/2019 at 09:55:57
Not sure Sigurdsson would be too happy with that Kevin, he's not getting any younger and it's probably time for him to move on in that case, we should start looking for a replacement now and not two years down the line as with Lukaku who still hasn't been replaced.

Many people think we already have such a player in our ranks but I'm not convinced, these type of players, creative playmakers who can score a few goals, cost a fortune unless you get lucky and unearth a diamond like Arteta.
