Season › 2019-20 › News Everton secure Gibson to new deal Lyndon Lloyd Friday, 31 January, 2020 6comments | Jump to most recent Lewis Gibson has committed to a new 2½-year contract at Everton and made a loan move to Fleetwood Town for the remainder of the season. The Blues were in danger of losing the promising young defender, originally signed from Newcastle United, in the summer when his contract ran out but they have now tied him down on new terms that expire in 2022. The 19-year-old played for the first-team during pre-season last July but has endured an injury-hit campaign for the Under-23s and he is hoping to get some games under his belt at Fleetwood before returning to Finch Farm to push for a berth in the senior side or going on a further loan next season. Disclaimer Minik Hansen 1 Posted 31/01/2020 at 15:52:15 Glad to have him still here! We need a CB from the youth setup, that'd be the best, instead of yet again searching for one. After Fleetwood, surely it must be atleast a spell in a Championship side, when hopefully he finally steps up to the senior side. With patience from his side, anything can happen. Robert Tressell 2 Posted 31/01/2020 at 16:24:58 Glad he's signed. Bit disappointed it's not a championship side for the loan though. Salisu who we have been linked to is only about a year older and has a full season in la liga on his CV. Some catching up to do for Gibson. Maybe next season at a higher level after cutting his teeth at Fleetwood. Gavin Johnson 3 Posted 31/01/2020 at 17:54:02 Aside from Anthony Gordon, Gibson is the only player out of the U23s who looks Premier League quality. If he plays well and stays injury-free, we need to have a close look at him in the summer. Good left-footed centre-backs are hard to find. He could end up saving us a fortune. Mike Gaynes 4 Posted 31/01/2020 at 18:18:56 Robert #2, it must be that the Everton staff want Gibson to add a little "bite" and attitude to his game.Fleetwood's manager is Joey Barton. James Flynn 5 Posted 31/01/2020 at 20:26:46 Good to hear. Justin Doone 6 Posted 31/01/2020 at 23:11:18 He's 19. Probability needs to another 2 or 3 years at least before he is ready to step up as a premier league defender. If he can play regular football at a decent professional level playing against experienced strikers he'll hopefully learn and improve.Good luck, seems a good prospect but a long way to go.
