Season › 2021-22 › General Forum Burnley sack Sean Dyche 15/04/2022 Share: Burnley have sacked manager Sean Dyche, assistant manager Ian Woan, first-team coach Steve Stone and goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer. Dyche was the longest-serving manager in the Premier League, having been in charge of the Clarets for 9½ years. Burnley sit in the Bottom 3 of the Premier League, 4 points below Everton. Disclaimer Danny Baily 1 Posted 15/04/2022 at 10:43:31 Dyche has gone! Brent Stephens 2 Posted 15/04/2022 at 10:44:24 Panic mode. Good for us? Steve Brown 3 Posted 15/04/2022 at 10:44:49 Dyche sacked. Hopefully, they'll appoint Benitez. Peter Carpenter 4 Posted 15/04/2022 at 10:45:45 That is madness! Hope they get Fat Sam. Steve Brown 5 Posted 15/04/2022 at 10:47:04 Hoping for that managerial bounce, but they have left it very late. Paul Birmingham 6 Posted 15/04/2022 at 10:55:46 Very interesting as they sacked Dyche and all his staff. I recall they sacked Owen Coyle before the end of their relegation season in 2010.Hopefully this will be a sign for Everton to take the initiative and beat Leicester next Wednesday night.Football is a fun old game. Peter Carpenter 7 Posted 15/04/2022 at 10:59:43 I can imagine Dyche was popular with the players, so hopefully this will have a depressing effect on them. I feel a bit sorry for him, another victim of know-nothing directors who are totally unqualified for what they do. Hope he gets a decent job elsewhere. Stephen Vincent 8 Posted 15/04/2022 at 11:00:13 So this is why David Unsworth left!!! Lee Courtliff 9 Posted 15/04/2022 at 11:14:22 Cheers, Tony.Burnley have appointed their Under 23 coach and Ben Mee (Club Captain) along with a couple of other coaches to take charge of the team for West Ham on Sunday. Very strange timing. Quite a few Burnley fans are glad he's gone but don't like the way it's happened. Last thing we need is for Burnley to get the old New Manager Bounce!! Dave Abrahams 10 Posted 15/04/2022 at 11:16:29 Strange decision sacking Dyche, this is the manager who received a bonus of between £500,000 and £1M every season just for keeping them in the Premier League or so I read only a few weeks ago. I wonder who they have lined up? Big Sam would certainly get them a few draws with his ultra-defensive football but who is going to score the goals for them, they won't play the very generous gift-giving Everton again this season and hopefully next season. Ray Roche 11 Posted 15/04/2022 at 11:20:45 Dave, there has to be a reason Allardyce is and has been, out of work for months. Maybe after his last failure, his ‘magic' has left him. Kevin Molloy 12 Posted 15/04/2022 at 11:28:15 If they appoint Allardyce, a New Manager Bounce is guaranteed. I don't think it will affect their results though, thankfully. Christopher Timmins 13 Posted 15/04/2022 at 11:36:18 Burnley have new owners with their own ideas as to how thing should be, however, given what he has achieved with the budgets at his disposal Dyche can feel that he has been badly treated. With regards to its impact on the relegation scenario I would think that it's a help to our cause.I hope West Ham don't play the B team on Sunday, I as their focus with be on the Europa League now. Brent Stephens 14 Posted 15/04/2022 at 11:40:35 The Burnley fans I speak to in the pub before / after games at Burnley have always said they love Dyche, even when they got relegated. Maybe patience has worn thin. The pub opposite the ground, the Royal Dyche, now in search of a new name, I assume. Pat Kelly 15 Posted 15/04/2022 at 12:06:58 Burnley have hit the panic button and sacked Dyche. Let's hope the panic continues. John Reynolds 16 Posted 15/04/2022 at 12:08:40 It's inevitable. Burnley will appoint Rafa Benitez, who'll get a new manager bounce to keep them up and send Everton down. Everton and Lamps will part ways and Dyche will be given the job to lead the Toffees out of the Championship. Allen Rodgers 17 Posted 15/04/2022 at 12:08:55 Rafa Benitez was saying only yesterday he was open to offers ! Winston Williamson 18 Posted 15/04/2022 at 12:22:18 John, I hope you're right in that Burnley appoint Rafa Beneathus…it'll guarantee their relegation. Plus, he might take Rondon off our hands next season! Fingers crossed Ian Bennett 19 Posted 15/04/2022 at 12:39:35 If anyone was getting Burnley out, it was Dyche. What's the view on James Tarkowski on a free? 29, not much pace - but could lead the back line better than we have. A real shortage of good commanding centre backs about. And we need one or two. Sam Hoare 20 Posted 15/04/2022 at 12:46:50 Wow. Bold (foolish?) move by Burnley. Benitez or Allardyce to enact revenge on Everton?!Ian, Tarkowski is a decent defender but not ideal if Lampard wants to play a high line. Jerome Shields 21 Posted 15/04/2022 at 12:48:17 John#9Don't think you are that far of the mark in Burnley appointing Benitez. It's a Newcastle Mark II situation. Brian Murray 22 Posted 15/04/2022 at 12:51:49 I doubt even the Adelphi would take him back. Robert Tressell 23 Posted 15/04/2022 at 12:59:53 Wow. But for Dyche that Burnley squad would have been in the lower reaches of the Championship for the last 9 years. They're lucky to have had him. I would have thought this weakens them for the run in. Michael Lynch 24 Posted 15/04/2022 at 13:19:54 Seems a strange decision, but maybe there's more to it than meets the eye? A clash with the board perhaps? I'm assuming they have someone lined up, so could be Rafa or Sam I suppose. On the surface, this is good for us. The players will probably be as shocked as everyone else by this - unless there has been a mutiny, which seems unlikely. Could be a new manager bounce of course, but West Ham on Sunday is unpredictable anyway, with the Hammers hungover from their massive win last night. I'm just praying that West Ham hold it together and give Burnley a good going over.A managerless Burnley defeated on Sunday, followed by three points for us at Goodison on Wednesday, and we can begin to see the light at the end of the very dark and smelly tunnel. Rob Halligan 25 Posted 15/04/2022 at 13:27:46 Burnley preparing for the championship next season. Peter Neilson 26 Posted 15/04/2022 at 13:31:45 Very surprising. Re. Tarkowski reported in iNews this morning that Lampard wants to sign him in the summer for what he bring to the defence and for his leadership. Ian Jones 27 Posted 15/04/2022 at 13:32:37 Operation Goodison renewed. The dream management team David Unsworth and Duncan Ferguson to take over at Burnley. Take them down and then resign. Seems fair! Chris Jenkins 28 Posted 15/04/2022 at 13:41:33 Very difficult to understand the rationale of the decision of USA businessman Alan Pace, Burnley's Chairman and controlling shareholder, to sack Sean Dyche at such a critical point in the season. Dyche has performed miracles on pitiful financial resources and had Burnley punching well above the club's weight for almost 10 years. For those enthusiastic about the rumours of Americans possibly looking to purchase Everton perhaps they should be careful what they wish for. The mess left behind at Aston Villa, Sunderland and by the previous owners across the park together with the shenanigans currently apparent at Old Trafford should serve as a salutary warning. Admittedly there are currently instances of poor British owners but Pace's crass decision hopefully may well prove beneficial for Everton Rob Halligan 29 Posted 15/04/2022 at 13:48:17 Can't argue with that, Ian. ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ Paul Newton 30 Posted 15/04/2022 at 14:06:04 It could be bad news that Burnley have sacked Dyche. 'New manager bounce' and all that. Dave Abrahams 31 Posted 15/04/2022 at 14:21:34 Danny (@52), “None of are no more or no less. We are all Everton and Evertonians." True in a sense Danny, but some go that extra mile and do it season after season, home and away, and do it for the sheer love of supporting the Blues. Incredible the lengths some of these Blues go to support the Blues and, even though some of them are thousands of miles away, they still worry and fret over Everton like we all do. So I'm in the same school of thought as Peter (@51), I've never lived more than a few bus stops or a 15-minute walk to Goodison Park, and that includes six different addresses, so it's been very easy for me to watch the Blues although the absolute joy of winning silverware and the mental anguish of seasons like this one have been the same for every one of us. Rob Halligan 32 Posted 15/04/2022 at 14:22:06 Unsworth is 20/1 for the Burnley job. Is it just purely a coincidence that Unsworth leaves Everton to pursue his own managerial career, then two days later Dyche is sacked. Unsworth is also from Chorley, about 25 miles from Burnley, so it's an ideal job for him. Kieran Kinsella 33 Posted 15/04/2022 at 14:25:32 Reminds me of Curbishley at Charlton, Pulis at Stoke. Managers miraculously gets smallish old fashioned club into the top flight, 10 years on people forget what the decades were like beforehand and sack him. Doesn't usually end well. Kieran Kinsella 34 Posted 15/04/2022 at 14:34:14 RobUnsworths last stint in claret lasted six days Rob Halligan 35 Posted 15/04/2022 at 14:54:33 Kieran, he only needs six days to lose at West Ham on Sunday and home to Southampton next Thursday. Jamie Crowley 36 Posted 15/04/2022 at 14:55:39 Aaaaannnnndddddd!!!!!! Burnley are down.I'll bet a TON of money on this, Burnley are down. They just fired Dyche. SO STUPID!!!! What in the world is a new manager going to do with 8 games left? Dyche had been fantastic for Burnley, they should have minimally let him see out the season. This is a very, very stupid move by Burnley, and I now actively hope they go down. It's my wife's team, so we almost always pull for them, but firing Dyche is so braindead at this point in the season, I'd rather see Leeds stay up and Burnley drop. Can't believe they sacked Dyche, he'd been fantastic for that club. Pat Kelly 37 Posted 15/04/2022 at 15:01:11 Burnley have hit the panic button and sacked Dyche. Let's hope the panic continues. Darryl Ritchie 38 Posted 15/04/2022 at 15:08:10 This looks like an Allardyce moment. Bill Gall 39 Posted 15/04/2022 at 15:10:11 Can't see what sacking Dyche will do for them. He has struggled to keep them in the premier for years with limited financial support, so what is a new manager supposed to do, he cant spend money if he is given it, as the transfer window is closed. They must be thinking that changing the manager will some how start the new manager fallacy that he will start winning games, ask Everton it doesn't always work. Tony Everan 40 Posted 15/04/2022 at 15:24:58 Dyche over achieved for years at Burnley, they were lucky to have him. A silly panic decision by the board, one last drunken, long shot gamble to try and win their money back. I think now a few of their best players will want out too. Jerome Shields 41 Posted 15/04/2022 at 15:26:34 Maybe Unsworth is going to be the Burnley manager? Anthony Murphy 42 Posted 15/04/2022 at 15:28:27 It does, Darryl – would be a concern for me if so, but we just need to focus on our own game and we'll be okay. David Pearl 43 Posted 15/04/2022 at 15:48:57 Stupid decision. They are down. There will be no bounce. They just sacked the only man capable of keeping them up. And Allardyce or Benitez? I don't think so. They won't pay their wages. Maybe their chairman thought, "Hmm... what would Moshiri do?" Bill Gall 44 Posted 15/04/2022 at 15:55:04 Jamie, I would not be too confident of Burnley going down we are only 4 pts ahead with the harder fixtures. Burnley play West Ham on Sunday and they will only have 2 days rest from their European game. We have to win against Leicester at home and get some points from the Chelsea and Liverpool games. The only advantage we are getting is we are getting some of our injured players back, but then it is going to be how Lampard sets them up. Unless something changes it is going to be between Everton and Burnley to see who goes down. Nick White 45 Posted 15/04/2022 at 16:12:43 Incredible decision by Burnley, absolute madness! I suspect he fell out with the owner as can't think of any reason why they'd sack him. Good news for us I'm certain of it. Peter Carpenter 46 Posted 15/04/2022 at 16:27:02 West Ham for them on Sunday no problem, Moyesie will be our friend. He was soooo close to rejoining us, as he might have mentioned. Just hope he's forgotten the Grim Reaper prank. Only a joke, Davey, honest! Dave Abrahams 47 Posted 15/04/2022 at 16:39:40 Dave (25), sorry wrong thread, should have been on “Who do you support?†Losing the plot with all this worry over Everton staying up!! John Pickles 48 Posted 15/04/2022 at 16:53:25 Wow, how stupid, looks like we are are now only the second worst run club in the Premier League. Jay Harris 49 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:04:08 Personally, I would have sacked him when they first took over for the "Alehouse" football they play but it is a strange decision to make with only 8 games left. Perhaps Rafa's agent has been in their ears with promises to keep them up? Brendan McLaughlin 50 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:10:23 Rooney is even-money favourite with one bookmaker. Neil Copeland 51 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:19:35 Brendan #44, Derby will almost certainly go down with Reading winning today so that may not be a bad shout. Rooney knows the Championship also which may be another factor in his favour. Brian Wilkinson 52 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:24:48 They still go on about Segers taking a bung for the Wimbledon game. Can you imagine if Unsworth gets the Burnley job, and they go down instead of Everton. Neil Tyrrell 53 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:28:29 Hard to fathom what Burnley are thinking here, I would have thought he was their best chance of staying up. The come from behind win against us showed the players hadn't quit on him. Seems really unfair to Dyche.Off topic but in the wider world of sports, RIP Mike Bossy - my all time favourite hockey player. Dead at 65 from cancer. Still the greatest goalscorer I've ever seen and always and forever The Boss. Neil Copeland 54 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:29:05 Brian #46, there would yet another inquisition to answer to! Rather that than the other way around though 😠Gerard McKean 55 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:34:53 Apparently Unsworth is very keen on the Burnley job as he wishes to live closer to his girlfriend. She lives in Southampton. Eddie Dunn 56 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:37:25 I think that Unsworth getting mentioned is pure coincidence. The whole coaching team have gone with Dyche so whoever takes the job must have a crew in place. As for Rooney, he ruled himself out of the Everton running, so I can't see him going to Burnley.I wonder if Dyche has had an offer elsewhere? Danny O’Neill 57 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:40:32 Not that I'm bothered, but wasn't there talk of him not being favoured by the board? One of the last remaining stalwarts of over-rated English coaches of that generation and "philosophy" in my view. Set up not to lose and grab a point or 2 if you can.Not me Ed Prytherch 58 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:48:22 Neil #47. Sad news about Mike Bossy. He was not as great as Gretsky but he played for my favorite team. RIP Rob Halligan 59 Posted 15/04/2022 at 17:55:08 Eddie #50. Unsworth could walk into Burnley with Ebbrell, Jeffers, Baines and possibly big Dunc as his backroom staff. Ajay Gopal 60 Posted 15/04/2022 at 18:09:05 I am slightly nervous about this appointment. What if the new guy gets them a couple of wins and we lose 3 on the bounce as expected Liverpool, Chelsea and Leicester (away)? The pressure will really be on Lampard and the players. Better to focus on our games and try to win as many as we can. Calvert-Lewin needs to start firing soon. We need to score more goals! Kieran Kinsella 61 Posted 15/04/2022 at 18:23:54 GerardI thought his girlfriend worked in the Liver building? Will Mabon 62 Posted 15/04/2022 at 18:47:50 Well apparently the inner circle always ask, "What would Everton do?" Seems they listened to a bit of Uncle Bill's wisdom. Peter Carpenter 63 Posted 15/04/2022 at 18:53:45 I smell a rat. Sack Dyche, fan outcry, reappoint Dyche, get reappointment of old manager bounce. Genius. We're doomed again. Eddie Dunn 64 Posted 15/04/2022 at 18:58:25 Blimey Rob, I hope that group wouldn't do that to us! Jamie Crowley 65 Posted 15/04/2022 at 19:07:56 Neil @ 47 -Indeed(!) on the off topic comment. I actually lived in Port Jefferson (my Bostonian father used to joke "behind enemy lines") during that time. We moved from Port Jeff after my Kindergarten year, so as a VERY young kid I really started to like the Islanders. Thankfully, the Bruins and my roots won out in the end.Bossy was amazing. Just a sick player. Put the puck in the net for fun, and was arguably the most prolific player the Islanders have ever had. I'll do a "Chico-Cha-Cha" in his memory. If you know what that means, then you knew the Islanders fairly well. All these guys I watched growing up are leaving us. It's sobering. Rob Halligan 66 Posted 15/04/2022 at 19:14:39 Peter # 57. Dyche will walk away with millions in compo, but then as he's available, the Burnley board won't have to pay any compensation to another club to get him back. Clever thinking on their behalf. Neil Tyrrell 67 Posted 15/04/2022 at 20:08:08 Ed @52, he was unbelievable, 50 goals in each of his first 9 seasons before his back did his career in. So many series and cup winning goals in the dynasty run. Gretzky has all the records and we'll never know what Bossy could have done if not for his back.Jamie @59, I moved here (Toronto) from Liverpool in 1979 aged 11 and it was impossible not to fall in love with those Isles. They were my introduction to hockey and I've yet to see a better team: Gillies (RIP), Trottier, Potvin, Nystrom, Tonelli, Brent & Duane, Battling Billy Smith (the archetype nutso goalie) on and on. And yes I remember Chico Resch well! It is sobering indeed to lose your childhood heroes, I'll never love another hockey player as much as The Boss. Apologies to everyone else and the mods for the diversion, just really choked up by this news today. Substitute Bob Latchford for Mike Bossy and you'll understand. Dale Self 68 Posted 15/04/2022 at 20:37:23 Oka, Neil, but remember the only Englishman in the NHL plays for the Blues. As for the Dyche firing, I'm with all questioning the timing. Get rid right after the weekend match is the norm so maybe this implies a blowup. Either way I can't see it working out for them. Check those relegation odds I guess. Neil Tyrrell 69 Posted 15/04/2022 at 20:41:29 Indeed, Dale, the timing is bizarre. Is it throwing in the towel or a last roll of the Allardyce? Howard Sykes 70 Posted 17/04/2022 at 19:34:25 I don't think the Americans understand football. If they are near the bottom at the end of the season you start cutting out the dead wood to rebuild, because at the end of the season there's no relegation in their franchise ridden football model.
