Gray Day

Leeds Utd 2 - 2 Everton

Due on the 09:54 am direct to Leeds, Katja and the kids joined me in getting the bus over to Liverpool, though we arrived much too early, a little after 9 am in fact so we made the most of the time we had and did a little bit of shopping in St John’s before I, excitedly, cut away to Liverpool Lime Street station, past several typically head-to-toe in red Liverpudlians, and on to the train with plenty of time to spare. I met Stewart and acquainted with many other passionate and good humoured Evertonians, most of us sinking a few beers on-route.

We rolled into Leeds station a little before midday and took a little walk into the city centre. The key tends to be to get a little bit away from the first few pubs you see as they often don’t like us away fans folk, instead we had a quick one in The Pack Horse, before heading up the road a little and around the corner to the quaint, cosy and welcoming Ship Inn where we relaxed, chatted and laughed for a good hour or so.

With it being the first game at Elland Road with a crowd for a long time, especially so in the Premier League, we were conscious of getting to the game on time and Chris, Mike and I made a dart for it at about 1:45 pm hoping to get a head start on the traffic. In truth we were actually a little late with the queues for the bus very long and slow.

We eventually left the queue and headed up the road and managed to flag down a taxi which took us as close to the ground as he could. With grey clouds above and the rain hammering down, we ran, pretty fast, to the ground as kick-off loomed. We had the complication of having to pick up a duplicate ticket from the away ticket office as it had failed to arrive in the post in time, though this was swiftly collected no problem, and so we were in the packed John Charles Stand just in time for kick-off.

We were already well aware of the team news, with two changes to the team which beat Southampton. Yerry Mina in for Mason Holgate, and Alex Iwobi, deservedly in my opinion after last week’s impressive cameo, replacing Andros Townsend.

As anticipated, the atmosphere was raucous in all areas of the stadium as we got under way, Yerry Mina got himself into a muddle early on though recovered to win the ball back from Patrick Bamford. The first half was busy though with few chances.

Demarai Gray made a brilliant spurt down our right and put in a delicious ball which Dominic Calvert-Lewin couldn’t quite stretch for. Just before the 30-minute mark a cross in from Lucas Digne resulted in Dominic going down in a heap under the attentions of Liam Cooper. While Dominic appealed vigorously for a penalty most Everton players did not pay much attention to it.

We thought the moment had passed and then on the next stoppage Darren England was called over towards the monitor to check for a possible VAR penalty. From where we sat, or stood, we couldn’t see the large screen so it didn’t actually occur to me that the referee was checking for a penalty until the bloke next me queried. Next thing we knew, Darren had seen enough to point to the penalty spot.

I loved Dominic’s penalty, taken exactly as a penalty should be. Pick a corner, don’t change your mind and smack it as hard as you can. Despite a pretty good record with them, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalties always make me nervous given his slow languid run-up. From the three penalties I’ve now seen Dominic take, I feel much more confident in his ability to put them away.

Going ahead in a tight game with a goal out of pretty much nothing gave us a good advantage. It was therefore of course very frustrating to give a goal away so easily. Michael Keane caught out positionally, and Patrick Bamford was on the march. He played a nice and sensible ball in to Mateusz Klich who finished smartly to draw Leeds United level shortly before the break. Abdoulaye Doucoure attempted to reply instantly though his distance drive was comfortably brushed aside by Illan Meslier. While a draw at half-time was about fair, it was frustrating not to go in ahead at the break.

If I felt the first half was a bit dull, the second was frenetic and end to end in what was a very enjoyable contest, the game really triggered into life by an exceptional finish by Demarai Gray who took on Stuart Dallas before placing an excellent accurate drive into the far corner of the net giving Illan Meslier no chance. Everton ahead, Evertonians delirious.

The frustration from there in of course is that we didn’t seal the game, with Dominic unable to convert either of two presentable opportunities. The first when slipped in nicely by Alex Iwobi, the second when Demarai Gray teed him up. At the time I felt he definitely should have put one of them away, though having seen them since I’d give Illan Meslier more credit.

The first chance for Dominic I think he did pretty much all he good as he didn’t have a lot of time and on another day that would have crept in. For the second opportunity, though Dominic hesitated a little, Illan was out at his feet very sharply in a good piece of goal keeping. If Dominic keeps getting these chances, he’ll put them away, and with Demarai Gray, Richarlison and Alex Iwobi in the team, he’ll keep getting chances.

At this stage of the game, Everton were well on top and the Leeds United supporters had grown very quiet. The Evertonians were jubilant, so much so that there was a full rendition of the all-conquering 1985 team song. Unfortunately our jubilation wasn’t to remain. The golden rule is that you have to score when you’re on top, and our failure to do so was unfortunately punished. You could see the Leeds goal coming.

Leeds United were on the front foot for a sustained period and Everton couldn’t get organised enough to defend their lead. As play stood still you thought for a moment that we had got away with it, though then Liam Cooper did well to guide the ball back to Raphinha who perhaps wasn’t closed down quickly enough though never the less produced an unstoppable drive which arrowed into the corner past Jordan Pickford. A frustrating hammer-blow by the Brazilian maverick.

Everton seem to be a magnet for certain players always scoring against them. The names of Ian Rush, Ian Wright and Les Ferdinand instantly spring to mind of course and there’s now Danny Ings who gets a customary goal against us, as does Callum Wilson. And now that Raphinha has scored against the Toffees in all three games he has played against us suggests he has joined this club. Half of all his Leeds United goals have been against Everton. If he had scored 20 goals you’d shrug your shoulders and say fair enough, but to have scored only six and half of them be against Everton takes the piss a bit.

Anyhow, with 20 minutes or so still to play, this changed this swung the complexion of the game somewhat in Leeds United’s favour. I wouldn’t say Everton were exactly clinging on for the point as they were still probing forward when they could, but it did then start to feel a bit like “what we have, we hold”, which I suppose was fair enough against a good Leeds United team. At full-time you felt frustrated not to have won, though had to accept that a draw was about fair.

At full time, I decided to walk back towards the city centre. The other lads were sat nowhere near me in the stadium, and I didn’t run into them outside either so I walked back in the grey drizzle, somehow taking a ridiculous detour though still getting to Leeds train station in plenty of time to grab a sandwich and some beers for the 18:15 train home. I couldn’t find the other fellas but ended up having a Leeds United fan next to me who was actually headed to Liverpool. It was nice to chew the fat with an opposing supporter and get a view of things from their perspective. It certainly passed the time nicely in the 2-hour journey.

In getting off the train, I made a beeline straight to the bus stop and caught my bus home just in time. Katja had kindly put a pizza on for me, and I was back home and on the couch with a movie before 9 pm.

It was pretty much one Dominic Calvert-Lewin conversion away from being a perfect away day. It's great to be back!

Player ratings:

Pickford: Some of his kicking in the first half was very poor though in goal he was largely untroubled and pretty helpless with both of Leeds United’s goals. 6

Digne: I thought he had a good game. He defended well and also got forward and contributed to attacks, including the ball in for our penalty award. His poor corner kicks continue to be a hindrance. 7

Yerry Mina: Had a generally solid game and seemed to enjoy the battle with Patrick Bamford. 7

Keane: A bit like last week, yes he made a poor mistake and was punished, though credit to him for overcoming it and not letting it affect the rest of his performance. However with Ben Godfrey soon to return, you have to expect his place in the team is under threat. 6

Coleman: He might feel he ought to have got out to Raphinha quicker for Leeds United’s second goal, but otherwise had a decent game. 6

Allan: He maybe tired in the last 20 minutes but prior to that he was everywhere and did a very good job of disrupting Leeds United’s play. My Man of the Match. 7

Doucouré: Covered a lot of ground as always and set up Demarai Gray for his goal. A decent effort. 6

Gray: Was a constant threat down Leeds United’s right side and took his goal exceptionally well. Is certainly looking to be outstanding value so far. I wasn’t convinced by him following his performance against Southampton, but he certainly did a lot to win me over yesterday afternoon. If he carries on like that, we’ll create a lot of opportunities. It looks like we’ve got a good player there. 7

Iwobi: Deserved his place in the team and made a very good contribution. He worked very hard all afternoon and was up and down throughout, even right to his very last action before he was substituted he ran back the whole length of the field to make a decisive block/tackle inside our penalty area. A very committed display and he was unlucky not to have an assist. A great effort. 7

Richarlison: His effort and commitment was certainly there though it didn’t quite happen for Richarlison yesterday afternoon. 6

Calvert-Lewin: Scored one, and might have had two or three, but that’s two goals in two games for Dominic and if he keeps getting in them positions he’ll keep on scoring goals. 7

Townsend (for Iwobi): He didn’t quite have the quality which Alex Iwobi showed but he continued the same level of industry, which was important. 6

Delph (for Gray): He arrived onto the field to some boos from the Evertonians and applause from the Leeds United fans who even sung “You are Leeds” towards him! He was brought on to stem Leeds United’s right flank and did an effective job of doing that. 6

Kean (for Calvert-Lewin): Didn’t have a lot of time in the game to make an impact. 6

Thanks Paul, I do like your stories of pre match getting to the ground. I like Leeds (the City), many good weekends there in my younger days at Various Rock pubs and clubs, but I haven't been to Elland Rd for many years, so I doff my cap at your commitment to EFC.

Like you I'm impressed at Iwobi so far under Rafa, if this carries on, what a bonus. However my biggest concern is DCL, his missed chances are nothing new, and at 24 is this going to improve? We all know he isn't the quality of Kane, but he does miss many sitters that any decent striker should gobble up, which of course cost us points. It's a pity we couldn't afford Abraham before his move. Either Kean needs to get stuck in to being at Everton or leave, he is just not commited to being at Everton, and his value is also dwindling.

Richie does need a rest but seems to be sulky a bit less, but Brighton away next will not be easy, they have had a good start.

I thought Iwobi had his best game in an an Everton shirt and played a great pass to put DCL through on goal. If he keeps this up it'll be like having a new signing (a decent one).

I, too, had Allan as man of the match and was surprised some, on other threads, were lambasting him, one even saying he was 'out of his depth'.

Digne really needs to sort out his corners. It's so frustrating when they hit the first man. One such effort led to a Leeds breakaway from which they nearly scored.

Full marks to England in eventually giving the penalty (which looked nailed on from where I was) but why was he looking at the screen for so long?

In recent seasons we've often seemed sluggish and slow but this season we look surprisingly fit!

Have referees had a directive to let the game flow? Despite the whining from a certain manager it really is improving the game for the better.

Was a good day by your account. The marks are about right. Calvert Lewin is at last getting into position attacking the near post. Hopefully he will get his feet sorted out. Keane was solid enough though wrong footed by a deflected ball. As Rafa says improving has to continue. Everton away record still in tact.

What has struck me in these first two games and a couple of pre-season matches as well is just how much Gray seems to be enjoying himself here at Everton. I am sure we all agree that is what fans want to see (not players spouting off on social media platforms about not being sure who we are playing at the weekend!). He was young at Leicester, got valuable experience in that amazing season for them and then had a tough time in Germany (by his own admission). Maybe the conditions are right for him to really flourish, I have really warmed to him and can see him becoming a surprise fan favourite. More of the same my boy and you will be adored by the Goodison faithful. Allan was also my MOM by some distance, really could see yesterday why some were mentioning Reidy in comparison at the beginning of last season. Let's hope he and the Duke can keep it up and Gbamin can enter the fray and do a job as well.

The supply to Calvert-Lewin has suddenly got a whole lot better with Gray in the team. His pace has teams stretched and it can help the midfield and defence regroup and reposition. He is undoubtedly an inspired signing, he will get better too with time even though he's hit the ground running. When Calvert-Lewin reaches full fitness he should be banging in some goals from those crosses regularly.

A good mention for Iwobi there, Paul. Benitez is coaching him well so far it seems, looks like he has more confidence in himself and is a bit more controlled in his play. How far can he improve is the question now.

Expansive. Not a word usually associated with my beloved blues. Not to be confused with a similar adjective, expensive, as applied to City, Chelsea et al.

The last time such a word was used was in the 1980’s but I have to say that today it was very apt. Expansive indeed.

Sweeping forward with purpose, wonderful wing play and a desire to use the full width of the pitch. The last time I witnessed an Everton player pushing the ball past the full backs and speeding past them was when I worshipped at the feet of Trevor Steven.

Gray was that expansive player today, a delight to watch and constructive as well. Fantastic movement, great crosses, first putting DCL in with a good chance to score, then scoring himself with a well taken shot to the bottom right-hand corner. My MOTM.

I love the way Rafa has taken the initiative with his setting up of the team. He played 4-2-4 when it suited, with Iwobi and Gray complementing DCL and Richy up front. When Leeds had the ball, it was 4-4-2. It clearly worked and on another day, DCL would have had a hat-trick.

A word about Iwobi. Not the pin-up of TW contributors in recent months, but credit where its due; another excellent game, another assist. Keep it up Alex!

Alan and Doucoure were solid and inventive and vied with Gray for top billing. A relief to be able to say they looked on top of their game.

Mina was an unspectacular centre back but played a classy game. I like him. The least said about Keane the better. He’s having a ‘mare at the moment. A rest is needed. I hope Godfrey is back next week.

The full backs Coleman and Digne had their work cut-out coping with Leeds’s wide men and their forays forward were limited.

Everton had 17 shots on goal, 8 on target. I’m scratching my head to recall the last time we did that away from home.

There will be a lot of teams who will come away empty handed from Elland Road this season. We are not amongst them.

I always enjoy these reads Paul. Even if they are often read with a hint of the nicest possible form of jealousy!! I had to make do with tracking the score in a London pub. Now, watching Soccer Saturday can provide heart stopping moments at the best of times. But watching it with no volume because they opted for music in the watering hole was very odd.

Always good to get a view of the game, especially when I didn't get to see it. Interesting to see a few shouts for Allan as MotM. The Reid comparisons, coined by myself are just that, comparisons of style, not necessarily like for like or ability. My 64 year old cousin mentioned it last week when we met after the match without me saying anything, so a few appear to see it. Style, similarities and comparisons; that's all they are. Sadly, we have bought him in the twilight of his career and we know how some of the Goodison faithful reacted to Reid in his. I remember QPR at home in particular when he turned on a section of the Paddock. Hopefully if we use Allan correctly and potentially sparingly, we get a tune from him.

I agree on Iwobi; he made an impact last week and must be impressing the manager. With him, I get the impression it's all about his confidence. Keep him confident and there's a player in there waiting to be released.

Without getting carried away early, with Gray, we now have supply for the forwards from both flanks. Last season, Dominic was too reliant on Digne. Yesterday in the first half is a good example. Gray's rapid run and excellent zipped cross that he missed connecting with by inches. Then it was Digne's cross for the incident that led to the penalty. He was the right side of the defender and would likely have scored has he not been fouled.

Dominic could have done better for the last chance, but ultimately, if he keeps getting into those positions, he'll score goals. 2 in 2; he's on track for 38!!

Your Liverpool fan stereotype still has me chuckling. Sad thing is, it's pretty accurate!!

If anyone can't make Huddersfield but has tickets and we can figure out logistics, please let me know!

Thanks again Paul.

Thank you Paul.

I tought there should have been a card (red) for that Leeds player poking Mina in the face(or eye or whatever). Also tought Mina overplayed a tiny bit.. but our players did not get ane help from the referee when in 1st half Leeds was playing a bit nasty.
When or players reacted in 2nd the got booked.
So the ref, who did nothingwith a poke in the face - I hope he wakes up with a turnip up his..

Paul, I too read your accounts with great enjoyment and a trace of envy, having never experienced the pleasant pre-game rituals you describe. Thanks for sharing.

I completely agree with your ratings (for a change!) and I remain impressed that the much-maligned Alex has been involved in three goals in two games. Could it be possible that Rafa is turning him into an effective player?

The Forum denizens unanimously and bizarrely criticized Mina for his tussles with the obnoxious Bamford (funny, I thought we were supposed to support OUR players, not the opposition), but I thought he got deeply into Bamford's head, reducing his effectiveness. And Mina's two heroic intercessions in the final seconds saved the point.

Jon, always been the problem in the UK and particularly England. If you're moving north to south, you're fine. West to east or vice versa has always been more of a challenge. Except for the M4 corridor from London out to Swansea.

I think DCL is unlikely to improve too much, re the number of chances he'll miss. As you rightly point out, he is already 24 years old...
A big part of it, is his footwork and technique with his feet. He seldom strikes the ball cleanly. Many balls that he tries to strike first time, is often a little scruffy.
But he does have a fairly decent first touch e.g. last season, he did bring down a high ball and then score with his first two touches (can't remember if it's a cup game).

The positives is that he has been getting into positions, and developing more confidence in taking his chances. If he can keep that up, he'll ultimately still score goals, and likely to be a regular 20 goal scorer. If Rafa continues this style of player, DCL is likely to score more than previous season.

Once again, thanks for the report, Paul.

I agree with you: Allan was our Man of the Match. He overcomes his lack of pace with astute timing of his interventions in midfield plus a natural grit and determination. Yesterday, he and Doucouré set the tempo of our play when moving from defence to attack.

I also agree with you about Alex Iwobi. He impressed in a handful of games last season, for example at Fulham and Wolves, but in others he looked lost, lacking confidence and belief. Now that it appears he has been given a clear brief on what is required, he is following instructions to the letter. He played a part in creating the second goal with a quick pass into Doucouré, laid on the superb chance for Calvert-Lewin and delivered an excellent cross for a Calvert-Lewin header.

I have always thought he possesses the attributes to be an effective player at this level. The main thing now missing from his game is goals, something which I am sure the manager and staff will address in the coming weeks.

I can't believe people are still criticising Calvert-Lewin. He is not fully fit but has two in two games which isn't too shabby. Graeme Sharp was never a natural goalscorer but still scored plenty of goals. Calvert-Lewin is similar and, when fit, he gives defences no end of trouble. Sort the rest of the team and watch his goals tally jump!

Very balanced report, especially where Keane and Iwobi are concerned.

I had drinks in O'Neills by the station and had to walk to the ground with Leeds fans after no joy with buses or taxis. I have to say I found them absolutely fine, the Leeds fans I spoke to were extremely nice and helpful.

I thought it was a great game played in a great atmosphere. Just a shame we didn't get the 3 points…

Calvert-Lewin (and I hope he doesn't read this) has never ever been served the type of chances per match that the strikers of the Treasonous Six regularly feed off from their team-mates. Hell, there's been a fair few periods of three, four or five games when he's never been delivered one single chance during his career with us.

Despite this, he delivers goals, shows for the ball, and generally retains possession, bullies entire defences, defends dead-ball attacks against us with aplomb, and is clearly trusted and popular with his team-mates.

Yes, he could become Drogba-like with his shooting but, if Lukaku and Kane are worth (totally, obscenely bonkers) nine-figure transfer fees, our lad is worth getting on for that already IMHO.

No marks for Richarlison, Paul?
Lukaku got praised versus Arsenal yesterday for his All-round performance and link-up play. When he was the same age as Calvert-Lewin, nobody ever said that... so even a big lump like him can learn as you go.

Keane though, he does what he does very well, but is limited. Nobody can fault his guts playing through and with a serious foot injury.

But it's like there's a transmitter buried under the penalty spot... if he gets too far away from it, the signal fades and his feet are all over the place like mad woman's shit.

It's only 2 games, so remember this time last season. One game at a time.

love reading your reports, Paul, it brings the emotion into it.

I have to give credit to Rafa for the improved application and energy throughout the team but especially the improvement of our central midfield of Allan and Doucouré. This has long been our Achilles Heel but these two guys are cooking with gas right now.

Thanks again, Paul. You bring following the Blues just that bit closer even from 12,000 miles away.

Comment re Leeds fans. From a distance, they look like Neanderthals but many years ago, when Leeds were back in the big time, first game of the season at Goodison, I sat beside two Leeds fans in the Bullens Road stand. I was expecting grief but found myself chatting with two of the most intelligent, knowledgeable footy fans I had ever met.

Of course the fact we were getting thrashed probably helped. Was it 0-3 at half-time? Think that was when Nev came and sat in the goalmouth at half-time?

Thanks for the atmosphere, Paul, a good away trip for you.

Mike Gaynes mentions the stick some (me included) gave Mina. It is true that Bamford was put off his game, but I don't subscribe to this non-criticism of our players. As someone said on the Live Forum, the players are not reading it.

In my eyes, Mina's panto actions are ridiculous. He can be an excellent centre-back and his diving header near the end was incredible. However, Bamford is normally a sensible and honest player. The referees are well aware of the play-acting. Mina is one of the worst culprits of pretending to have been hurt at the slightest contact.

This will hurt us in the end, as the refs will ignore his protestations. The fact that he is so big and seemingly so delicate doesn't go in his favour. He's trying to con the ref and, in my book, that's cheating. I don't like it in any player and that includes ours.

I can't understand the plaudits for Allan. Although he reads the game well and seems to give his all, he is painfully slow and he hit a few inaccurate shortish passes. He looks like he's running in treacle. Peter Reid could pass and tackle and he wasn't anywhere near as slow as Allan.

Finally, Richarlison looked so tired. He also got his pocket picked a few times for taking an extra touch. A couple of promising attacks were ruined by his greed.

We are though playing more fluidly in attack, and Gray and Iwobi are helping to make us less predictable. I think that Leeds paid closer attention to Richarlison and the other lads benefitted. Rafa seems to have them all on point.

Eddie 20, Good post regarding Mina's antics, don't like to see any player behave like that after getting the slightest touch he wants to go down. The refs will not fall for his actions.

Bill@2, agree about Luca Digne and his corners, but it’s such a pet-hate of mine watching football at “any level”, when the attacking team don’t have a man standing on the near post, closet to the ball.

Put a man on the front post, and a bad corner can suddenly become a good corner, especially if they are hit with pace.

Personally I did not find Mina,s actions wrong, he is big, not afraid to tackle, and done a real effective job on controlling Bamford.
We need a couple of nasty, you shall not pass players to let the opposition be aware that don't think you can intimidate us.
Every club has players some more than 1 who continually fall over as if they have been shot from a simple tackle, Mina and Bamford were just continually pushing and shoving each other and both complaining to the referee and Mina just gave as good as he got.

I agree Bill @29. Good to see an Everton player give it back, moan at the Ref and not get bullied or seen off. He's playing the game as much as the Leeds forward. If that's Keane, it's a different outcome.

On the flip side, Dominic done it for the penalty. Lots of grabbing both ways and it was a blatant shirt pull, but Dominic provoked it and then made absolutely sure he got that penalty. He was penalised, but just over-egged the fall in my opinion. Some would say went down like he'd been shot!! And then ear-flicked the officials.
