Schneiderlin's regret at joining Everton

21/02/2022  54 Comments  [Jump to last]

Morgan Schneiderlin has been talking about the move he quickly came to regret, when he joined Everton from Manchester Utd 5 years ago:

“I learned a lot from my departure from Manchester United. I had played 40 matches the previous season with Manchester,” he told L’Equipe.

“When I come back from the Euros, I take 10 days off and I play very little for three, four months. Then, I have Ronald Koeman and Everton who are pushing hard to get me, every day, from October.

“I will remember it all my life: I should have played against Liverpool (in October 2016) as starter, and the coach comes to see me. He tells me he doesn’t feel me inside the group.

"I tell him that indeed, with what has happened in the last 3 months, I am not in it and I want to go to Everton... I regretted it very quickly.

“Even if it went very well at Everton, when you play for Manchester United, when you’re at a club like that, it’s not for a moment of doubt that you have to question everything.”

Trust me, Morgan, we all feel that regret.

In a very crowded field, I'd confidently put forward Morgan Schneiderlin as my shout for the biggest waste of space to have played for Everton in the last 20 years.

If you're looking for an Everton player to do no more than go through the motions, put his team-mates under pressure with hospital passes, and generally provide the illusion that we are playing with one less than the opposition, then Schneiderlin was your man.

I cheered his departure with pure abandon. What a fraud.

Andrew (4),

”What a fraud” needs no more words, describes him perfectly.

He was among the 1st of bad recruitments (either the player being not good enough or unlucky with injuries) that have plagued us since the Koeman days:

Ashley Williams
Schneiderlin
Bolasie
Sandro Ramirez
Vlasic
Klaassen
Walcott
Tosun
Sigurdsson
Moise Kean
Iwobi
Gomes
Mina
Gbamin
Bernard

I am sure I have missed out on quite some more.

A list of expensive, infamous footballers who have now brought our club to its knees.

Yes, it is a shame we bought Schneiderlin but there's a wider issue in picking up players on a downward trajectory from a big club.

Although it feels like we're rubbing shoulders with the big boys again, it very rarely works out. We end up with an under-performer on big wages.

It is much better to pick up younger, less established players who are prepared to learn, work hard and consider Everton to be a step up in life. These don't quite feed the vanity as much as a big (ish) name but they can deliver more and for much longer, with lower wages to boot.

Unfortunately the Dele Alli is a worry, and it will be a challenge for him and Lampard to get him motivated enough to deliver.

He is a big baby and trying to get digs in to the Everton fans.

Take responsibility for yourself and perform on the pitch and maybe you can get back to your big club again.

Well they can't all praise Everton when they go. Looking at our club, it's quite odd that many do.

I thought Schneiderlin was another example of players happy to hide at Everton. He invariably dropped deep and provided pointless link-up with centre-backs that achieved nothing but to give the opposition time to organise and rob us of a midfielder. And I thought that when he was being praised in the first season.

Barry Rathbone
19 Posted 21/02/2022 at 21:47:02
He's trying really hard to put the boot in, which is good news for him because he hasn't tried anything in years – the bone idle reptile.

Always been concerned about signing players dropping a level because they are clearly not good enough for the big time but, in their delusional little minds, they are!! A guaranteed recipe for not breaking sweat.

We should put an embargo on buying from clubs out of our league till we prove we are in their league.

Most remembered for feigning injury in that embarrassing FA Cup defeat to Liverpool's kids, allowing their player he should've been marking free rein to score.

Gobshite who constantly hid when the going got tough and one of the worst pound-for-pound signings we've ever made.

I don't remember a lot about him in an Everton shirt, which says a lot.

We were told by Jim White (who else) he was a Rolls-Royce of a player. I had doubts within the first few weeks of him joining us in January 2017. He was supposed to be the replacement for Gareth Barry. Never in the same league.

Off-topic (unless you allow for ex-players who get pissy). I think it is good to see the Lukaku problem coming up again.

He is ace when he gets one-on-one on centre-backs but he does go missing and has trouble imposing himself on the game.

Morgan the hider. Used to love hiding when a team mate needed an outlet. Slow as shit too. Proper waste of money!

That list of Ajax’s at 8 is horrific! A who’s who of nobodies, who cost us everything!

Dale @31,

Lukaku showed a complete lack of respect to the owner, the manager, the players and the fans. Chelsea spent huge money to bring him back and gave him a big 5-year contract and, 6 months later, he gives that ridiculous interview.

In my time as an Evertonian, he is the only player I would describe as a coward. We have had employed many second-rate specimens but he is and was spineless.
Mike Gaynes
37 Posted 22/02/2022 at 21:13:41
Dale #31, Lukaku is a conundrum. He was lost at United, then a phenomenon at Inter -- 80 goal involvements in 95 games and a Serie A title -- and now he's lost again at Chelsea. 7 touches in an entire game (one of them the kickoff) is a joke he will never live down.

Andy #36, agree. Morgan Sscneiderlin is the only Everton player for whom I have absolutely no respect.

Nothing to see or hear. Waste of space, from shitting on Southampton, to regretting being shit at Man Utd (one of the most faceless clubs since Ferguson left) the man's words mean nothing, as he is nothing of note, whichever club you talk about.

Awful player.

Hard to believe we identified central midfield as an area to strengthen…then proceeded to spend £100 million on Schneiderlin, Klaassen, Gomes, Gbamin and Delph. Thank you to our esteemed Directors of Football and Ronald Koeman!!

However much Schneiderlin regrets signing for us, there are far more of us who regret us signing him!!

Did you pick up your wages without giving 100% in every game, Morgan?

And don't tell fucking lies.

Paul Birmingham
42 Posted 22/02/2022 at 21:47:01
A spineless, gutless fraud of a footballer, who was a total waste of space, for Everton.

Pathetic and a sad indictment of the period under Ronald Koeman, which has seen Everton continually spiral in terms of improving in form and success.

43 Posted 22/02/2022 at 21:48:47
Like others, I loathed Schneiderlin at Everton. What I do find perplexing is how good he was at Southampton and what happened to that player?

It feels like so long since we've had a functional central midfield (Barry and McCarthy?)!!

Dale Self
44 Posted 22/02/2022 at 21:55:12
Who's got a connection at L'Equipe? Someone may be interested in how a player gone so long ago has so many Everton fans remembering him so well.

Barry is the prototype of what we need now but with maybe a little more speed. A man who can read the game who has the respect of his fellow teammates.

Robert Tressell - I've said for years we need to avoid players who are on a "downward trajectory" myself. That's why I'm worried about Dele Alli. Just how motivated is he after leaving the Bright Lights of London?

Morgan was a waste of a player. Even in his first few months, when people on here were referring to him as a Rolls Royce player, I couldn't understand what they were seeing.

He was a midfielder who never played a forward pass!! Never!!!

Arsehole.

Stan Schofield
48 Posted 24/02/2022 at 18:23:56
Well if he regretted joining us, he should have said so at the time, and refused to take any wages from us, or accept them and immediately donate them to charity.

It's amazing how someone supposedly regrets signing for us but is happy to accept the money that could have been better spent on someone better and happy to play for us.

Best to keep your gob shut, Morgan, stupid bugger.

On his day, at his very best, he was a bang average, lazy, footballer and we signed him when he was past his best.
