David Unsworth was likely forced in his line-up with probable Covid-related absentees, with McKenzie Hunt starting and Seb Kristensen returning from long injury layoffs to sit on a depleted bench tonight. Everton were forced to come from behind at Chesterfield FC's Technique Stadium after the Blades took an early lead in the 3rd minute. Whitaker was injured in the incident and soon had to be replaced by Kouyate. Katia Kouyate equalised for the Blues with a fine header on 26 minutes before Mills turned in Lewis Warrington's corner to put Everton in front before half-time. And the 18-year-old — who was operating in a central midfield role as opposed to his regular position on the wing — netted his second of the night in some style shortly after the break, rifling home a splendid effort from outside the box. Everton U23s: Leban, John, Hunt, Campbell, Welch [Y:51'] (73' Kristensen), Warrington [Y:41'] (67' Higgins), Quirk, Butterfield, Cannon, Mills, Whitaker (7' Kouyate [Y:83']). Sub not Used: Nash. Terrible mistake by Leban in goal. It's on Sheff Utd YouTube if interested. Andrew Keatley 2 Posted 06/01/2022 at 19:28:54 Kouyate heads the equaliser. Andrew Keatley 3 Posted 06/01/2022 at 19:48:28 Mills gets a second a few minutes before half-time from a deep corner from Warrington. The Kouyate goal came from a fantastic cross from Hunt, playing (unusually) at left-back and being one of the better players on the pitch in the first half. Brent Stephens 4 Posted 06/01/2022 at 19:52:14 Andrew - why Hunt at left-back do you think? Really unusual for him! Phill Thompson 5 Posted 06/01/2022 at 19:53:14 Certainly deserving to be 2-1 up at half-time after a disaster from Leban for their goal. Hunt having a decent game, Welch looking composed playing ball out from the back, starting off our attacks, Warrington having his usual busy game in midfield and Kouyate lively up front. Phill Thompson 6 Posted 06/01/2022 at 19:56:06 Brent, Hunt has struggled to get into our midfield, we did pick him at left-back for one game this season, it didn't work out well for him, but in fairness he's having a de ent game. They've obviously worked on that position with him, maybe it's a last chance saloon shot for him as he's unlikely to get into midfield. Brent Stephens 7 Posted 06/01/2022 at 19:58:16 Similar to that other lad who was brought back into RB position from midfield not too long ago? Not Kyle John... Phill Thompson 8 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:05:57 Brent, you thinking if Seb Quirk, we tried him at right-back a few times.I believe both Hunt and Quirk have contracts until June 2022, so they're playing for their future. Brent Stephens 9 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:08:03 Quirk it was. Thanks Phill. Phill Thompson 10 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:09:16 Brilliant from Mills 25 yards out: 1-3. Brent Stephens 11 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:09:46 And another Mills goal. Absolute cracker!!! Derek Moore 12 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:11:55 This link should work for anyone:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNGawvRBS_o Brendan McLaughlin 13 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:15:22 Derek,Thanks... works for me! Phill Thompson 14 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:29:49 Liam Higgins on for Warrington, another who's been hit by injuries and really fighting to get another contract. Brent Stephens 15 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:34:55 Phill, Warrington subs bench at Hull?! Tony Everan 16 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:36:23 I missed the goal due to the dog begging me for it's walk. Mills certainly has eye for goal, hopefully they'll show it at full time. It's been a good performance after going behind. Phill Thompson 17 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:51:53 Brent, Warrington is such a solid performer, never seems to have a bad game, he's at the core of our U23s ….. I'm not totally convinced he can push onto the first team though. He reminds me of Liam Walsh, small, tidy, always good on the eye but maybe something “ extra†missing. Any other PL club might risk a few u23s against the likes of Hull, I don't think we dare though! Maybe Mills on his performance tonight might make the squad. Phill Thompson 18 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:55:44 3-1 to Everton full time, deserved win, only a sloppy goal let us down. Brent Stephens 19 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:57:23 Phill, I've said before that I really like Warrington. Maybe I wish too much for the lads. He looks a bit bigger than Liam Walsh. I was thinking subs bench on Saturday for him – wait till we're three up!. Derek Moore 20 Posted 06/01/2022 at 20:57:38 Thought we got battered for the last 25 minutes, but you can't argue with the result. Entertaining open game of footy. Andrew Keatley 21 Posted 06/01/2022 at 21:07:56 Momentum definitely shifted once Warrington left the field. He continues to impress. As does Stanley Mills, whose pace and direct running is going to give him a great chance to make a decent career. Both players also seem to have a combative spirit and do not shirk a challenge. Good signs. Tony Everan 22 Posted 06/01/2022 at 21:09:15 Yes Derek, a very good save from Leban with about ten minutes to go I thought was important. I was able to rewind and watch Mill's goal, what a cracker, a clean hit and the goalie no chance. Andrew Keatley 23 Posted 06/01/2022 at 21:14:45 Brent (33) - I think Phill is probably right. Combination of competition for a midfield berth (although Butterfield and Price - both from the Under 18s - have started a fair amount of games), fitness issues (I was under the impression Hunt has been unlucky with injuries over the last 2 years), and maybe even the decision to shift him there out of necessity - coupled with an interest to play Elijah Campbell at centre-half alongside Reece Welch? All guesswork, but it was good to see Hunt out there and giving a decent account of himself, even if he did get caught out defensively at times. Derek Moore 24 Posted 06/01/2022 at 21:16:14 Mills really looked a level above most of the other lads out there. An exciting prospect.
