Drenthe cut for disciplinary reasons

Royston Drenthe was axed from the squad for yesterday's semi final at Wembley for disciplinary reasons, Everton have confirmed.

The Dutch winger was expected to be named among the substitutes but was left off the team sheet altogether, with a club spokesman saying that, "Royston Drenthe has been the subject of a disciplinary matter. This has been dealt with internally and the club will be making no further comment."

Drenthe missed three games recently after being released on what were described as compassionate grounds and he played no part in the Blues' painful cup derby defeat, with rumour suggesting that he was disciplined for arriving unacceptably late for either a training session on Thursday or the team bus down to London on Friday.

The young winger has had plenty of behavioural issues in his career so far — indeed, he was made available to Everton last summer because Real Madrid had lost patience with his antics.

Though he has contributed with some valuable goals and assists this season, it would seem unlikely that David Moyes will opt to keep Drenthe on a permanent basis in the summer.

Press speculation today suggests that Liverpool are keen on signing the mercurial midfielder who has scored four goals for the Blues since arriving on loan last August.
