Moyes wants 'At least two more'

Boss admits Rodwell sale was right move for all concerned
David Moyes admits that the timing was right to sell Jack Rodwell, with the 21 year-old getting a new opportunity and Everton able to bring in ‘at least two new faces' before the end of the transfer window.

Speaking at the press conference ahead of Monday's season-opener with Manchsester United, Moyes wouldn't be drawn on names, but the manager insisted the Club is actively seeking new recruits before 1st September.

"It wasn't a necessity (to sell Jack) this year," Moyes said, "but I felt it was the right thing and it will give us a little bit of a chance of looking around to see what we can do.

“We'd already sold Joseph Yobo and Tim Cahill so it wasn't a necessity (to sell Jack) this year but I felt it was the right thing and it will give us a little bit of a chance of looking around to see what we can do.

“I am happy with Steven Naismith and Steven Pienaar and while you wouldn't expect me to talk about other players — it is wrong to talk about players at other clubs — we are out there actively trying to bring at least another couple of players to the Club.”

One of those is, of course, Kevin Mirallas of Olympiakos who seemed set to sign before the weekend but things have gone very quiet regarding the move after the Belgian returned to Greece to mull over competing offers from Everton and Arsenal.

Meanwhile, of Rodwell's move to City, Moyes added: “I'd known about it for a wee while. It was something which I thought was right for Jack, it was right for Everton, it was something I just felt at this moment in time was right and gives us a chance maybe to do a little bit more business in the transfer market.

“We had to raise the money so hopefully I'll try to add to the squad before the season starts. It gave Jack an opportunity to go to a really good club and take his chances there.”

A slew of questions answered, from the mundane to the inane... and no mention of Mirallas that I could hear... No questions about Ben McLaughlin...

I'm glad Jack went to a really good club!!!!! We used to be a really good club before Moyes sold the future.

It's gone quiet on the Mirillas front. He had to sign by midday today to be eligible Monday's game. It's a bit worrying that Arsenal have got mega bucks to spend now. Apparently if Song goes to Barca they will be after Felli! I hope not. Two fresh faces and a loan and keeping our current squad would make me one happy blue. COYB!!

Ernie, the OS says we are fully fit.
Mirallas, Niang and maybe a back up full back who could possibly play both sides (a rarity I know). I'd be pretty happy with that.

"A slew of questions...from the mundane to the inane"

It does my head in when I hear some of the crappy questions that get asked of managers. In the next few days, you'll typically hear the following during radio / TV interviews:
"How important was that 3 points?"
"How disappointed were you to lose?"
"Do you mind scoring tap-ins or do you prefer the odd 30-yard screamer?"

With respect to handling the media, I think DM represents Everton very well. He scores very low on the gobshite-ometer, unlike king k, rafa b and gerrard h.

If David Moyes has stated that it's wrong to talk about players at other clubs, why would we expect a question about them? He ain't going to answer.
At least he's whetted the appetite for a couple more in early.

(Sadly, on the subject of media, I am disappointed that Harry Redknapp has become a BBC pundit. I can't stand the man and was made up with his career development pathway last season. He came out with the insightful comment this week that "Van Persie could score the goals that win the title for Utd".
Straight out of the Alan "state the bleeding obvious" Hansen school of thought.
Still, that's media training, I suppose. Bland, bland, bland.)

Jesus Christ his first press conference of the season and when asked how he thinks we can fare this season after finishing 7th last year he still cant get away from the "secure survival in the division and see what happens" mentality. Do your fuckin head in.

9 Posted 17/08/2012 at 16:31:27
Seamus, when asked if he was confident of doing at least as well as (or better) than 7th, he said he absolutely was. He said he was very happy with his team and believed the players had a great chance to do very well this year.

What do you want from him?

I would like to see Charlie Adam come across from the dark side and show what he really can do with the Blues. With Moyes' bro as Adams agent I believe something could already be on the boil.

Another possible in with a Blackpool connection is Matt Phillips. I have watched him a few times and lacks a killer instinct. He had his big moment at Wembley in the Play offs and blew 2 easy chances to bring the Tangerines back to the Premier league. The other week in a pre season friendly at Wrexham he missed several open goals. I would steer clear of him if I was grand master Moyes.

Moyes refusal to talk about other team's players is admirable in the modern game. Especially when you hear that Liverpool's new manager is quickly getting into the 'liverpool way' of disrespecting other clubs.

These couple of players could be the difference to returning to 2006-09, regular Uefa and being a progressing team, looking to finish 5th/6th.

The competition for european spots gets more intense every year. I think adding enough points for nailed on Uefa would be a good achievement. To finish 4th you need 70 points lately and that would involve adding 13-16 points, too much imo.

So, clearly Moyes views a right sided attacker as priority. Depending on the type of player they are they could be considered as cover up to. But, Moyes was in the market for another striker as he was sniffing around Rodellega, and to play for us you need to be able to play lone. I am very concerned if Jelavic gets injured and Anichibe is the cover with his injury record. Velios looked very green last season, his is another development season for him .

As has been pointed out, the Charlie Adam rumour could have legs considering we are gong to be playing a fair amount of 4-2-3-1. As Felli and Gibson start there is only Neville beneath, will be doing a fair amount of right back and is knocking on so we may need a deep lying mid, even if it isn't Adam.

Finally, on right back. Only Moyes knows if he feels Coleman has a chance of making it in the top division at right back or not. If not, we need a young one in this season or next.

I don't know if we need him, but Adam would do well for us. It wasn't so long ago that Fergie wanted him. He definitely has quality.

I would rather see a RW and a decent CF first though.

Kevin Day@741.

There will always be people who have different ideas on a players capabilities or whether we need to sign a particular player. Personally, I think we've done pretty good so far and if Moyes can bring in another player or two I'd be made up. However, I hope to God it's not the likes of Adam. Leave that lowlife to the RS, where he belongs. I'd just as soon sign Joey Barton.

Do you think there's a chance we'll sign Messi and Iniesta.........

Wayne Smyth
23 Posted 17/08/2012 at 18:11:13
We definitely don't need adam.

As well as fellaini and gibson, we have neville, barkley, osman and junior who all have the ability to play in there.

However we don't have a decent right winger, or players with pace....and given the players we've been heavily linked with(niang & mirallas) Moyes is looking to bring that kind of player to us, rather than yet another centre mid on big money who can be shoved out of position on the wing.

As an aside, rather than carping on about knives and gunfights last season and filling the squad with very low quality players like McFadden, Hannhemann, Straq etc, Moyes should've been selling players that were either coming to the end of their shelf-life, or where we have others ready to step in. With the proceeds he should've been buying in youth and quality where we are weak.

That is just what he appears to have done this season which is nice to see, but he should've been doing it every season to move the club on. We're never going to compete with the teams above us on financial terms, so it requires Moyes to prove why he's one of the best paid managers in the league and keep improving the squad within the budget he's been given.

Paul - Maybe we have listened to different clips of the same question but ive just listened to it again and he didnt say that he "absolutely" was confident of doing better or that the players had a "great chance of doing better".

What he said when asked was he confident of doing better was "I am confident because ive got the same group of players that finished the season (not true but anyway) and im hoping we can build on it". Not "Absoultely" or a "great chance" as you say.
He then reverted to type and followed that mildly positive answer with his usual shite in adding" But as I always say, its always my first line, the first thing you do is get in a position of safety in the Premier League and remain a Premier League club and with the new money thats coming into the league (???) its important to stay in the league"

You ask what did I want him to say - how about just his first line without the expectation lowering bullshit that he came out with after that. WHy is it necessary anyway? Do you ever hear any other manager of a consistant top 7 club speaking like that? In my opinion its unnecessary and it does my head in, hense my original comment!!

27 Posted 17/08/2012 at 19:12:52
Seamus #751, not sure about your use of question marks, but the new money he refers to is the increase in domestic TV revenue which takes effect from 2013-14. Estimated to be worth around £15m per season. This doesn't yet include the overseas TV component, for which the new contract also kicks in at the same time, but may not be concluded until towards the end of this season.

All past evidence would suggest that player wages will rise to accommodate the increase in turnover, I'd like to see Everton be brave - we can't compete with the top table anyway, so let's not pay multi millionaires any more and focus on improving the overall squad / facilities.

Oh, and I'd like us to finally start hitting the numbers on the sponsorship deals as well. It's one thing to complain about the others having a lot more money than us, but when you tie your own hands behind your back, it starts to ring hollow.

Is anyone else worried that we seem to be linked officially with far more new signings than we are used to at this stage of the pre-season/transfer window?

Jack Rodwell's sale has clearly given us some transfer cash flow, but we appear to be in the process of spending all of it - and more - right now?

On one hand, with all the extra Sky revenue and the disposal of the likes of Cahill, Yobo and an assortment of non-influential loan players, one would hope we would not have a problem doing just that.

However, despite being an instinctive optimist, I am also cynical enough to think that we seem to be far more active than we have become used to in recent seasons and I can't help wondering if this is the sweetener before the bitter pill of Baines, or Fellaini or Heitinga being sold as the window closes?

I do so hope it's the former. I am tired of this burgeoning reputation we seem to be branded with as the paupers of the division.

We are Everton for goodness' sake. Let's start acting like it and put a few pundits in their places.

Speaking of pundits, has everyone noticed how the media are currently masturbating themselves into a frenzy over the latest (Rogers) revolution in Gobshiteland?

One heavyweight paper recently ran a huge story about them re-introducing red goal nets! No news substance at all, apart from the fact it gave some more column inches to them.

And if Jonathan Northcroft in the Sunday Times writes one more piece in the midst of a premature ejaculation about them (as he does every season without fail or conscience), he needs a written warning.

If they get a win at WBA on Saturday, buy the ST the day after and see what I mean. He'll be cross-eyed with orgiastic satisfaction and a severe case of w*nker's cramp...

Moyes is being professional, and saying what is expected without giving to much away. The positive statement is that he said he would like to add at least two more players.

Pity we don't already have the players we need for the first game. However, Man Utd can be taken despite RVP's presence but they always play well at Goodison.

Assuming Fellaini and Gibson are both fully fit, we have a fighting chance. Still, even if we lose, the main thing is that we have played well and shown we are going to be a better force than last season — especially at the beginniing of the season.

Hopefully one or two more astute signings may make the difference to the season. Dempsey would be my ideal choice to complement Jela but the media seems to favour Redshite who can throw around more money, while the Belgian is now leaning towards Arsenal for obvious reasons.

Interpretation of Moyes pc.
We'd already sold Yobo and Cahill = overdraft charges paid for this year.

Right for Jack and right for Everton = we need to sell a player per year to keep the club in the black/red/somewhere between black and red.

But I already knew that, and so do most of us on here I think/hope?

So, no change in the general make up of the club it seems, so why do I feel so optimistic?

Peter #790

Owen? seriously?

You know what? I didn't mind the club doing McFadden a favour last season, but Micheal Owen can fuck right off, if he wanted to come to us, he should have done it two seasons ago, all he's looking for now is to build up his coffers for training his nags, he's got enough money for doing fuck all, no point in us giving him more to strain hamstrings while Haydocks on is it?
Peter Cummings
43 Posted 18/08/2012 at 09:26:18
Steve just a thought: Owen could be a useful backp and knows he couldn't command the wages he was used to in the past.

As far as building up his coffers, how many players today can be said to be playing for anything BUT the money? I can remember the days when a fiver was 'big' money for players (yes, I'm that old) and he is a free agent to boot.
Rhodri Cannon

While I don't necessarily agree with signing Owen, I do believe we need another striker, even if Niang signs, and I firmly believe Mirallas will to solve our right wing problem.

With Vellios likely to be loaned out and with Vic being Vic, I don't really think a 17-year-old who has never played in the PL before is a suitable back up, even though the lad has frightening potential.

Exhibit A: Mirallas introduced on the pitch before a match against a top Manc side... Result? A mighty 1-0 victory.

Exhibit B: Jelavic introduced on the pitch before a match against a top Manc side... Result? A mighty 1-0 victory!

Summing up: Whenever we buy a new player and parade them on the park in advance of a big game, we win!

Verdict: Buy a new player every other week (oh, to hell with the transfer window!) and repeat as above, thereby guaranteeing 19 home wins a season. [Cheers from the gallery]

Kevin,

Would this workk irrespective of the quality of the new recruit?

To return to an old rumour, we could sign that K Johnson character, who could then leave midweek in a dispute over catering or whatever, only to re-sign in time for the next home game.

He's also cheap, apparently. I've heard he heads for the Jacks when it's his turn to get a round in.

Kev Johnson

Tony - I can't comment on the "K Johnson character". I actually got semi-suspended from TW for 5 days after the last laughter-fest revolving around my namesake!

Yes, it would work irrespective of the quality of the recruit. Defo. There are two problems though: so far it's only worked against Manchester teams. Hopefully it will work against teams from other cities, who knows? Fingers crossed eh.

The other problem is the transfer window. My plan would be to buy 18 players now and then drip feed them to the crowd at Goodison, one every two weeks.

Net result: 19 home wins for EFC. Bob - you are very much my uncle

Kevin, don't you mind that Tony fella. As part of your contract negotiations, insist on an unlimited amount of free Chang every week. The tax man can't take half of it if it ain't cash. No footballer in England likes the tax man when he takes half their 200thou a week wage. Also, you can impress your mates with an open bar every time they call around. After all, if you are going to be a top footballer, you need an open bar in your mock georgian mansion.

I am optimistic regarding the new season; last season, we lost at home to QPR... this season, we beat Man Utd, who is to be feared?

Man City look to be favourites again. We need to stop losing at home to Arsenal & Liverpool. I like the look of the squad, not perfect I know. If we replicate the latter half of last season form, would a top-four finish be fantasy?
