Orient blown way by five-star Blues

Everton 5 - 0 Leyton Orient
Kevin Mirallas scored twice on his full Everton debut and spurned a glorious chance for a hat-trick as the Blues thrashed Leyton Orient 5-0. The Belgian also assisted goals for Osman and Anichebe as Moyes's side eased to a 4-0 half-time lead, while Magaye Gueye volleyed in a fifth after the interval.

Match Summary

Leighton Baines took a heavy knock in the early stages but looked to play through it as Everton attacked the Park End. Magaye Gueye had an early opportunity but struck his shot wide. Everton won their first corner off a great cross from Magaye Gueye with Anichebe's header being deflected behind.

Naismith worked a great ball in to Anicehbe and his strike was going in, but pushed away by Jones. Naismith then laid on a brilliant ball in for Mirallas who had a lot top do to beat Jones but that's just what he did, taking his first goal for Everton very well indeed.

Gueye then had a great chance off an excellent cross from Jagielka but his shot was deflected behind for a corner when it could easily have been the second goal. That came soon enough when Leon Osman poked home a ball in from Leighton Baines that was flicked on by Mirallas and set up nicely for the Everton midfielder.

Coleman and Naismith were attacking with relish and there should have been more goals as a result, with good shots from Naismith and Mirallas before he drove another one in right-footed, a low shot to give the new Belgian star his second goal of the night, on a ball from Naismith after good play by Osman.

Baines then came close, driving in from 25 yards and forcing a good save from Jones. And before the break, Victor Anichebe made it 4 - 0 with an excellent strike teed up for him on a return ball from Mirallas, the Nigerian driving the ball under hapless ex-Blue keeper Jones.

Coleman did a nice nutmeg and picked out Anichebe who's shot pinballed around and was finally cleared as the Orient managed to prevent Everton going in with five at the break.

David Moyes made three changes at the break, with Baines, Jagielka and Osman coming off, to be replaced by Shane Duffy, Ross Barkley & Luke Garbutt. Barkley had a shot from the edge of the area but it was always rising.

Coleman did well and Mirallas was shaping for the volley but the ball was taken off his toe and it was Barkley who's strike was blocked.

Barkley, trying to be too clever in the midfield allowed Leyton Orient to get in a shot that was deflected just wide of Mucha's post. At the other end, Coleman again driving the blues forward, won a corner. Barkley tried to pick out Mirallas for his hat-trick but it didn't come off. But good buildup play by Naismith and Coleman again finally saw an end-produce with Magaye Gueye lashing home the fifth goal of the night.

Neville pulled up with a tight hamstring or calf injury, and he hobbled off, leaving Everton to battle out the last 15 mins with only 10 men, having used all three subs at half-time. A good break, with a run from Mirallas, but Anichebe wanted the glory and he missed the chance. Then a great set-up from Coleman, following a superb pass from mirallss, who was there for his hat-trick but mishit it into the ground.

Anichebe tried to go for glory in the 1 minute if added time but eh final score was 5 - 0, the first game to qualify as a Big Win for 18 months!

In the end, it was as comfortable for the Blues as the scoreline suggests. The great start to the season continues...

Everton: Mucha; Neville, Jagielka (46' Duffy), Heitinga, Baines (46' Garbutt); Coleman, Osman (46' Barkley), Naismith, Gueye; Mirallas, Anichebe.

Subs not Used: Howard, Distin, Vellios, Jelavic.

Attendance: 24,124

I think the line up show that the competition is being taken seriously. However, I would like so have seen Coleman show what he can do at right back,in my view that was always where he is going to play eventually. Also, why not Duffy and Heitinga at centre back?

Barry -

God has a sense of humor. I think the Mayan calendar runs out on December 22nd. He's giving Everton the run they've deserved, only to be cut short by Armageddon.

This really is so far past my wildest expectations for the start of the season, surely that's the only "plausible" answer?

Just awesome.

We've hit the peak of the Moyes cycle. Expect big things this year lads. This is a great squad of players playing with a style that Moyes has been developing for years. He doesn't get nearly enough credit for the way he gets us passing the ball. Now it's properly clicked. I'm very excited and I don't care if I'm getting ahead of myself.

Btw Stoke just opened the bidding at £4mill for Adam. I'd welcome him at that price.

Carrying on with the good passing and movement. Been very impressed with Naismith so far he looks a good intelligent footballer. Liked the look of Garbutt when he came on and Barclay showed some good play as well. All in all another good performance with some excellent football. These type of games have been a bit of a banana skin in the past so nice to cruise into the next round this time.

The sort of game we've struggled in the past to win. But Orient were seen off with the minimum of fuss.

The substitutions disrupted it a bit, but who cares?

Only downside of tonight was those who turned up late causing the game to be delayed. Cheers.

John Crawley
29 Posted 29/08/2012 at 23:54:49
Ste you are wrong about people turning up late causing the game to be delayed! The problem was with the ticket collection process. Firstly the club don't seemed to have posted out tickets from Friday onwards which meant an unusually large number being collected on the night but they had no system in place to deal with these increased numbers even though they would have known about it before hand.

I arrived in the queue over 30 minutes before the 7.45 kick off time. I got into the ground just after 8.30! There were still hundreds of people behind me as well. If I had just turned up to buy my tickets on the night I would have got in a lot quicker than I did!

You know something, I've been to quite a few Everton matches even though I live the US. And I go to my fair share of other sporting events locally. And I have never once showed up to a match without my ticket. Waiting until 30 minutes before the match to get your ticket is a "YOU" problem. Seriously, get your tickets ahead of time.

Even with our first team against 'inferior' opposition in more seasons than I care to remember we might have struggled to get a result in a fixture like this.

Phil Bellis is right of course, and the worse is yet to come. But only because it couldn't have been much better.

DM's been ok for me for a long time, but don't you just love our players at this time?

You couldn't have scripted this much better. Fringe players get a game, clean sheet, five goals, two for the new boy. All credit to David Moyes; fulsome non-grudging praise. A new signing (or two), a win against West Brom and anything is possible.

Shit, all this good stuff makes me uneasy.

Great performance all round tonight, you could see the confidence throughout the team. A joy to watch, Naismith was my MOM he worked his socks off with some great touches, excellent movement from him.

Just a bit of a worry on Baines, saw him enter the DB in the second half and just looked as if he was hobbling slightly, hopefully nothing serious.

Anyone else pick up from tonight's programme that it's exactly 34 years to the very day we battered Wimbledon 8 - 0 in the League Cup, with a hat-trick from Martin Dobson and 5 from Bob Latchford...... I was an 11-year-old snotty nosed kid with me Dad (god rest his soul) in the Lower Bullens that night...

C'mon Sam (112) - "It's dangerous raising expectations!". We're just rooting for our team. What's the point of doing so without raising expectations? The Man Utd game was no great thing, only the beginning. Villa? Shouldn't have scheduled us. LA got what was only "expected".

WBA next. Still time to forfeit. If they show up for the game? Fuck them. Just another club.

And can we please stop with the "Maybe 6th place" comments. Everton Football Club in 2012-13 is a great team going about proving it.

John Crawley 105 - That doesn't surprise me in the least. I went to West Ham away a couple of seasons ago and the staff in the Everton Office hadn't passed on the list of names/tickets for pickup. I got in 25 mins late. Standard, organised Everton.

The Moyes haters seem to be reducing by the day. Just over a year ago, a lot of people's decision was beginning to sway, even mine. I've always liked Moyes, but his negative tactics at the start of last season were depressing and not pretty. Looking back now, I do think he was simply playing to our strengths – Defend! The attack is crap!

I'm glad we kept hold of old Moyes. Always been effective in the transfer market and now he has the team he wants, we can get back to the School of Science!!

Jamie - its as simple as this. We have seen as good as it gets. Nobody in the history of football has made a start to the season better than ours.

It can only go downhill from here. But, how?

What do we fear the most. Injuries and suspensions, crap refereeing decisions. All of these will come, and they won't 'even themselves out'. And we don't have an army of mercenaries to fill the gaps when they come - as they will. Poor club, thin squad, that's what that means.

But we won in '70 with about 13 players, not too many more in the 80's. It can be done. And I don't feel unjustifiably optimistic about this lot.

And with a blonde Scot. Not quite Sandy Brown, but a decent lad.

David its not a "you" problem it was a club problem. Firstly its a night game on a workday so a lot of people, myself included, couldn't collect them before hand and secondly if you don't think its a club problem waiting for over an hour to pick up tickets that you have already paid for then you are seriously deluded! Its really not rocket science they knew how many tickets there were to be collected they should know how many they can distribute per 15 minutes etc they should have had a system in place to distribute those tickets more effectively.

John,

Every single match I've gone to I've had the tickets mailed to me, hence no waiting in line. If I can do it, so can all of you. The club has only so many people they can have on hand to service every single person who show up 30 minutes before kick off to collect their tickets. They can't just hand them out as you come up to the window you know. They have to verify who you are to make sure you're not just collecting a ticket for free. Then you have many people who you know damn well showed up and suddenly forgot their verification, didn't have ID, etc. When you buy your ticket have it mailed to your address like I have done every single time I've been to an Everton match or any other event. There is no need to collect your ticket 30 minutes before the match, get it in the mail.

Mark Stone

Tickets for the Orient game had been on sale for two and a half weeks. Too many people decided to buy them over the bank holiday weekend, which meant they would not receive them in the post in time, or on the day, meaning they had to come and collect.

There were messages on the radio, the blue kipper site, even the official Everton twitter account, asking people to get there early.

Mates of mine had to collect theirs, but hung around in the pub til nearly half past. When I mentioned the fact they said it would be busy, they didn't seem to believe that a midweek game against lower league opposition would be a big attendance, and assumed they could just stroll down whenever they fancied. Judging by the queue I saw as I went in, so did hundreds of others.

They missed nearly all of the first half, and you know what? Serves them right. Too many people leaving it until the last minute caused the problem, not the club

Re "ticketgate", I'd been down in London for meetings, and thanks to a cancellation was able to get back to Liverpool and decided, at 5pm, to go. Registered on the site, booked a ticket and got to the ground at 6pm. No queue, got my ticket then went to the pub to meet people.

I don't think the club can be blamed for this. If I had one minor criticism, it's they could've considered other technology in addition to the electronic ticketing. In other countries you can buy online, receive a barcode MMS to your phone, and gain entry without the need to collect a ticket or interact with anyone. But, maybe they did consider this and decided it wasn't cost effective.

Phil Sammon
55 Posted 30/08/2012 at 08:47:56
Why didn't they organise a helicopter to collect all these guys straight from the pubs around the stadium? They could have paid for their tickets mid-flight and been airlifted directly into their seats.

The club is a disgrace

"Too many people leaving it until the last minute caused the problem,"

Jimmy, in the 55 years I've been going to the match, that has always been a problem for big games, as well as ticket problems like we appear to have seen last night. People staying in the pub until the last minute. I've witnessed numerous ocassions at Goodison over the years where we have been lucky to get away without serious injuries to fans in the crush to get into the ground.

In my opinion, it was also the one of reasons for the tragedy at Hillsborough. Just my opinion, I don't want all the world and his dog giving me grief.

Does the fact that they also own Liverpool and should therefore also be considered in the light of us having been housed in Anfield have anything to do with it, or is just the Boston Red Sox drought that is referenced

Jamie (136) - I knew you'd get it.

What can I say, we have a great team. Of course, we'll need luck to be a lady as we go along (And I'd remind her, "You OWE us"). We are thin, at least it appears that way. Who knows, among the surprises and delights might be several youngsters thrust suddenly into the breech and succeeding. Like always, the games will be played and we'll see.

Anyway, unless something bad, injury-wise, happens, fuck em. Fuck em all. WBA next. Besides, we can always revert to KITPK1 or whatever that acronym is. We may not like it but we're a formidable Side that way too.

David 137 - Christ what a patronising and condescending post! Believe it or not sometimes you are not able to make a decision about whether you can go to a game until a few days beforehand. Therefore getting the tickets in the post was a non starter. The fact is that it took the club over one and half hours to process the people stood in line waiting to collect the tickets they had paid for. They knew how many people were going to be collecting their tickets they should have had a better system in place for distributing them.

Mark 138 - I was shocked when I read your statement that they tell you that you should be there two hours before kick off. Perhaps I had got it wrong so I checked the email that I got from the box office and no mention of any time you should get there! So I checked the terms and conditions for the e-ticketing and that said 30 minutes before kick off. Even the Everton stewards there admitted there had been a problem but no according to you and others on here its all down to the fans.
