Martinez will ponder further signings

Roberto Martinez hasn't ruled out making further additions to his squad before the new season but has indicated that he will take his time in assessing his current charges to see what areas of the team need strengthening.

The manager moved quickly to add four players to the squad he inherited from David Moyes, drafting in Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz, Joel Robles and Gerard Deulofeu before he'd completed 10 days in the Goodison hotseat.

Now he will use the pre-season programme to take complete stock of his options, including which younger players might be ready to make the step up to the first team on a more regular basis, although he will keep looking for potential signings.

“I think it is important to bring in players early,” Martinez told evertontv. “I do feel the squad has always been strong and we have got great experience, but we needed to have certain additions to have different options.

“The biggest aspect of our squad is the experience and the continuity that we have in this group and that has been very impressive to see how they adapted to the new work.

“But you can never stop searching, you can never stop looking to help the players that we've got at the football club.

“I can imagine the next four weeks are going to very much be about assessing the competition that we've got in the squad, assessing the youngsters and how quickly they can help and how quickly they can be prepared to have a role in the first team. Then we'll always keep an eye to try to be as strong as we can be at the start of the season.”

The Spaniard, who celebrated his 40th birthday last week, will get his next opportunity to run the rule over his players this evening when the Blues take on Accrington Stanley in their first pre-season friendly of the summer on home soil.
