Baines was content to let Manchester United situation play out

Leighton Baines may be happy with the way things turned out after Manchester United's pursuit of him last summer, particularly given the success of Roberto Martinez's first season in charge, but he admits that his decision to stay with Everton was less about straight loyalty and more a case of "letting the business side [between the two clubs] play out."

He insists, though, that it's not in his make-up to force a move or to hand in a transfer request and he was always involved in the discussions.

"It was a bit of a stressful time because you're not sure what way it's going to go," Baines told the Daily Mail.

"You just try to conduct yourself in the proper manner as much as you can. I had those conversations myself. I didn't have someone in there for me feeding back.

"I guess you never know if you're doing the right thing or not but at the time, it's not your decision as a player to make those calls."

Baines says he feels sorry for the way things turned out for David Moyes, the manager who brought him to Everton and gave him the platform on which to become the best left back in England but he is also happy with the outcome of his own personal transfer saga.

"I can only be happy with the way we are going along now and the position we are in, still in with a fighting chance of getting Champions League football. We have our highest Premier League points tally in a season and that under the new manager, for a first season, is extremely positive going. The next step is to see what we can do about strengthening. I'm sure the manager is looking at that."
