No place for Galloway in England U21 line-up

Brendan Galloway will have to wait for his England Under-21s debut after Gareth Southgate left him off the team sheet for today's Euro2017 qualifier against Kazakhstan.

The 19-year-old received his second call-up to his country's U21s squad after pulling out of the first invitation through injury and it was thought that his excellent form in the Premier League with Everton would propel him into the match-day squad at the least this evening.

Southgate has reportedly opted for Southampton defender Matt Targett instead for the left-back slot.

"He was very close to being named in the squad," Southgate said of the decision. "It was tactical. We only really wanted one defender on the bench because we wanted forward options for tonight."

Galloway is primarily a centre half but is being blooded at fullback by Roberto Martinez at Goodison Park and the ex-MK Dons player will likely follow a similar route to that trod by John Stones who rose through England's ranks as a right back.

Elsewhere, Gerard Deulofeu was in Spain U21s line-up once more as they took on Sweden in Tenerife. The Blues' winger has been in great form for his country's U21 side in recent weeks and he again provided an assist for Oli Torres to score the opening goal but the match ended 1-1.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Russell Griffiths started for England U20s in their 1-0 defeat to Germany with Mason Holgate on the bench and Jonjoe Kenny started for England U19s in their goalless draw with Italy this afternoon; his team-mate Callum Connolly was named as a substitute but didn't feature.

Likewise, Harry Charsley was an unused sub for Ireland U21s as they lost 1-0 to Italy in U21 European Championship qualifying.

Southgate is a very lucky boy to be still employed in that role. Tosser.

Unfortunate for Galloway but fortunate for us since we'll need him at the weekend and we don't want him getting injured.

Perhaps it's just me being cynical but would his price increase if he played for England? Perhaps Matt Targatt of Southampton is some player.

I'm glad that Brendan hasn't been chosen on this occasion because Everton need him at the moment.

I'm all for our young lads getting a run in U21s if at all possible. I know there's always a chance of injury but that is slight and I believe offset by the great contribution it can make to their confidence and technical development.

Good news as he will be nice and rested for Manure this weekend. He has really been impressive, long may it continue.

If it is the 1st squad he has attended, he shouldn't just go straight in the team, no matter how good he is. They get too much too young these days. There's no doubt he will get in the team, but he has to earn it, not be handed it on a plate...

Southgate must have some team if our boy can't get into it... or he's a crap manager.

Anyway, as others have stated, at least he won't get injured.

I tend to agree with Danny (6) there. Particularly as Roberto obviously sees him ultimately at CB.

Southgate is completely out of his depth, even at this level. Another cushy job where nothing is expected on the FA gravy train.

Galloway has been the best LB in the Premier League this season so I don't see how playing in a match like this would benefit him anyway but, by admitting his omission as 'tactical', Southgate has just made himself out to be an even bigger tit than most originally thought.

Brilliant, that means he'll be fit for Saturday.

Galloway seems to have been a little unlucky on this occasion but in all fairness Targett has been in decent form too.

In many ways, it works well for Everton as a hole, Brendan will return to us fully fit and play at the weekend v man u, so everyone blue is a winner.
