Forest move ahead of Everton in pursuit of Cornet

| 23/07/2022 49comments  |  Jump to last

Nottingham Forest have reportedly stepped up in their interest in signing Maxwel Cornet from Burnley and could have a key financial edge over Everton and Fulham.

According to the Daily Mail, the newly-promoted Midlanders are more prepared to meet the Clarets' terms when it comes to the structure of the transfer fee which would be around the £17.5m needed to trigger the winger's release clause.

The Toffees and the Cottagers are said to have only offered a loan option for Cornet or, at most, a £5m down payment with the rest of the fee paid in instalments.

That tallies with Everton's financial situation this summer where they are having to make low-ball offers up front in order to land as many targets as possible and remain compliant with the Premier League's rules around profitability and sustainability.

Article continues below video content

It means, however, that they can easily be gazumped by rival clubs willing to offer more on the front end of a deal or pay the lump sum in full, the latter scenario being more favourable to Burnley who need to account for the effects of losing their Premier League status in May.

If that's true.. its depressing stuff. I thought that Juve had an obligation to buy Kean this summer..30m I thought? Looks like we need to offload players before bringing in any.. even after the Richie sale.
Looks like we're in a desperate situation. Depressing stuff.

Joe, Juve's obligation to buy Kean is next summer, not this one. Unless something changes, we'll have to wait another year for that cash.

Mike @2.. thanks for clearing that up. I really really hope there's some transfer news in the background. My half glass full being is clinging to that.

I'm convinced we can't buy until the last minute as we don't want to waste money on wages paid in July / Aug prior to the window closing. Tarkowski was free so it's only wages with him. Anyone we buy costs the fee, agents fee and wages immediately. If we bought Cornet 2 weeks ago and lets say paid £10m upfront plus £75k a weeks, that's around £10.7m before a ball is kicked. By waiting we save £0.7m that could be used towards another player.

Money is that tight, we've got to save and economise as best we can. Maybe that's why Moshiri shouted from his Ivory Tower, "judge us at the end of the window". Trouble is we will have played 6 games by then and in my opinion have a lot of catching up to do. Horses that linger in the stalls very rarely get into the race.

Jack @5, I suspect after 6 games we will be bottom. It's madness and an awful situation we are in. James wages were 200k per week, for a handfull of games, Sigurdsson 45 million (Spurs selling should have been a clue) Rooney (the boys comes back home) 160k a week. In the same season Salah scored over 30 PL goals and was on 90k per week.

Now a team that has been out of the premier league donkey's years can outspend us, and get a very useful player, and he will score more than the players i've mentioned did (not Salah or course).

Years of mismanagement on every level you care to think of has come home to roost. Has it now resulted in us being out-muscled by the promoted championship clubs? At this rate the good ship Everton will be sunk before it reaches the dock.

None of the hierarchy should dismiss what Frank said about the threat of relegation. Every word of it is true. He is sounding a warning to Moshiri that he has to do something now before it’s too late.

By hook or by crook we have to get some targets over the line. The whole board and owner should be in a war room now for the next few weeks giving full backing and every resource to Kevin Thelwell and Frank. This is no time for being absent from the front line in Monte Carlo or focusing on the latest West End musical.

We had the ‘never again’ slogan bandied about in May after a near miracle escape that the magnificent fans somehow coaxed from the players. Right now we are a weaker team, definitely offensively, in a league where others are getting stronger.

It’s time for Action from our board, not sound bites.

Well done and massive appreciation to everyone who attended the protest today. The board should not underestimate the groundswell of disenchantment.

I’m trying not to judge till players come in. I would rather we bought good players slowly than bad players quickly.

Obviously it should be achievable by well run clubs to buy good players quickly! Let’s hope we don’t do the opposite!!

My understanding is that there IS money but we are trying to spread 35m over 5 needed players this summer. Hence low upfront offers.

West Ham just completed the deal for Scamacca, could prove to be a real coup and another step in the right direction.

Over at Everton however we can comfort ourselves that we have all the tools needed to have 40 points on board by May, no ambition of having a good season, just float head above water for another year until we eventually sink.

Jim B, I've heard of optimism, but just where are we at present, going to amass 40 points ?

I have checked the upcoming fixtures and none are on Fantasy Island !

It's frustrating, but you also can't have it both ways. When we signed Michael Keane, he was in the last year of his deal, told Burnley he wasn't going to sign a new contract, they basically had zero leverage, but we just threw 25-million at them in order to get the deal done as quickly as possible. That sort of cavalier mindset is a big reason why we're in the situation we're currently in.

Now we're adopting a more measured approach, and people are all over Twitter saying "Just pay the damn release clause and get it done. What's the problem?"

Sam @ 8. I know I bang on about finding lower cost players but £35m for 5 players would be some going.

Presumably more free transfers and loans to keep the spending down?

I'm hoping for 2 or 3 - so let's see. And let's hope we're all pleasantly surprised by the end of the window. Still some very good players available.

We are supposed to be in a dire mess with money. I just wonder how much did the Club spend on that pre-season trip to the USA? 32 players - plus all the Officials etc. I'm thinking Air Travel - Hotel Bills etc. Might have been better to stay at home and played local teams. And we are going to Australia in November? No wonder theres no money for transfers!

I think I am as worried or depressed as everyone on here about the absence of new faces and clearly the manager has the same opinion, his trust in what he has continues to be eroded. What does irk me is the total, utter, lack of transparency ( never mind sccountability)
Have the coffers been slammed shut by the FA, are we not allowed to spend? I am not asking for actual numbers, just the comment, "we have been limited by the FA due to the rules on FFP" it would stop the conjecture, the frustration within the fanbase. We would know we're we are. Moshiri's " judge me at the end of the transfer window" is empty rhetoric without any activity.
How did the board allow this financial situation to happen? This is not all down to Moshiri buying at a whim, this is a collective series of decisions made over his whole tenure. He funded the decisions but why was not the implications of spending that much managed by the board with respect to FFP? Who didn't say no we can't when the cheques were being written? Who was responsible for compliance of FFP? That's not Moshiri, that's the board.
The road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but ignoring the road signs is wilful stupidity.
We are were we are, but that's the problem, we are lost. Without a map, without a captain and the crew fearing for their lives. We need direction, we need leadership, not silence.

I'm afraid our attempts to shop for bargains has been severely compromised by the team captain. Lampard's first action was to lash out forty big ones on Dele All, and loan plus wages of £5m on Van Der Beek, neither of whom made a proper contributio to the last five months of the season. That's the Richardson fee gone right there.

Hope and belief, that Everton can get lucky with bringing in at least 4-5, new players, who want to play for Everton.

It’s a sense now that the club right now, is barely able to compete in the transfer market, and I really hope that in the end of incoming players it’s not all done on the last minute.

But hopefully stealth, guile and patience can make it happen.

Hope eternal.

Kevin@19.. what forty on Delle Alli? He's on a free transfer until he hits 20 matches.. then it's a 10m fee..it doesn't hit 40m until 100 matches I think.

Paul, 21, I can’t think of 4 or 5 players worth signing now. Gibbs-White dropped out the other day and Gallagher is staying with Chelsea. Broja has better options. We seem to be looking at cast off free transfers.

Brendan yes, it's been a pretty disastrous week for the manager. He must have totally alienated the players (whether or not they deserve it is beside the point, they know now without doubt that if trouble comes, they will be the first shoved under the bus)., and also sent most unwelcome signals to the rest of the world about the state of the club. It's been so bad, I am beginning to wonder whether he will be here by the end of the window. He's obviously a nice chap, I just don't think he's go the hang of this managing lark. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and is too concerned about no1 (fine in a player, in a manager not so much).

Joe, yes it's either forty if we play him, or just his wages if we don't. Problem is, his wages will add up to nearly £20m over two and a half years, and that would be money almost literally being flushed down the toilet. Paying him not to play.

We don't openly admit how strapped we are cos if we did it would leave us in an even more exposed and vulnerable position.

With respect to FFP, Moshiri went for broke for Europe. He gambled on "hollywood" managers and backed them financially...he, Moshiri and Moshiri alone got it very badly wrong.

However your final paragraph...nail on the head. Could not agree more.

PS Apologies Bernie #22...perhaps a little too explicit😊

Clive, yes sadly it’s looking that way, and the season kicks off in 2 weeks.

Frank could potentially be forced to player youngsters, but we live in hope.

It’s gonna be tough and let’s hope any loan players arriving don’t end up not being used like King and El Ghazi.

Joe McMahon
29 Posted 23/07/2022 at
Kevin, I can see Frank leaving in the next few weeks. With this squad and only cheap players no one else wants, the job is impossible. It's bad for his health and reputation. Davies, a past it right back et al, not to mention DCL (the 6 yard kid) will not keep us out of the bottom 2. Richie was priceless to us, he went too cheap.

Interesting everyone though DCL was gonna go to Arsenal for 40 million. No chance they are making some shrewd additions.

Expect Duncan to he brought back as first team manager. What a pathetic circus the club has become. Mr Kenwright over the years is killing the antiquated Grand Old Team. Christ I just wish he'd Do One!

There's not a snowballs chance in hell that Frank will leave Everton. He needs to succeed at Everton as much, if not more, as Everton need him to succeed.

Interesting comment on the the Big Man...did he see the writing on the wall, perhaps?

Toffeweb is a depressing place.

We started last season with hope and optimism, despite the manager. In October we were in the top 4. We then went on to have the worst injury record in the league, and that hurt us.

A fully fit Everton squad, whilst not brilliant, should finish roughly mid table. Add a couple of signing to that and we could easily be top 10.

We have Englands best keeper, arguably one of the best in the world. We have a striker that has proven her can score twenty a season. Between the two we have a number of quality players - Godfrey, Mikienko, Gordon, Mina, and a few good players, Duke, Allan, etc.

Provided we are managed properly, we should be fine. Honestly, some on here just revel in predicted misery

Andrew Brookfield

Just to add, I think we need to add players. Obviously a 6, a Richarlidson replacement, maybe another Right back. But we should just be patient, I’m sure these players are coming…
Bernie Quinn
33 Posted 23/07/2022 at
Lets talk 'explicit'. We have 'Strikers' who can't score. DCL - Rondon - Gray - Gordon. Sell them! We have young keen forwards such as Emms and Dobbin - play them! But they are inexperienced? So what.? They seem to score the same number of goals as those first four. I certainly don't want Frank to leave the Club - just wish he would be more ruthless with his selections. And isn't there any sensible.respected person, connected to the Club who can tell Kenwright; Moshire; et al. what is so obviously going (gone) wrong?
Shane Corcoran

Andrew # 31, that has to be the most optimistic/(insert word of choice) post ever.

Did we have the worst injury record in the league ever? Not sure how one would actually grade that.

Just goes to show that facts and/or opinions can be put out to make any argument.

But I think you are waaaaaay off.

Matthew @ 14, unfortunately it is looking like those sort of deals for us, though I must hasten to add, that we, or any other Club for that matter, can only sign one player on loan from any other Club.

So it is cheap purchases with players who have potential, (where have we heard that before ?) or a few loans from different parent Clubs. Worryingly the clock is ticking and becoming louder, so fear that panic deals may ensue.

Bernie, with a distant, clueless owner being led by the nose by an equally clueless chairman I can’t see how we get out of this current mess.

It seems to me that we are almost in a catatonic state at the moment. Moshiri hiding in n his Monte Carlo tax haven. Kenshite awol in London, terrified of making decisions or showing his fat gob in public.

Our dreams have turned into nightmares with these two dickheads in charge. Lord have mercy on us.

Unfortunately we have become the bottom dwellers of the PL eco-system. But it seems that the board and specially our miserable chairman are either incompetent or they simply don't care about the club! Show me another institution with a long standing chairman as ours without achieving anything at all!
No wonder we are in this horrible situation. I am fully convinced we will be in the bottom three by the next international break.

As I have suspected, we aren't even at a position to pay anything remotely close to a one-off £17.5MM that is Cornet's Relegation Release Clause.

I don't blame Thelwell for reaching out to Burnley with a Loan-to-Buy proposal to begin with, and then an installment & incentives-driven deal (e.g. £9MM down payment with another £11MM incentives that would bring the Total Value higher than the Release Clause Amount). Never likely to have those agreed by Burnley with our sour relationships with them after the run-in at the end of last season, but if you don't ask, you will never get.

I don't anticipate any Permanent Deals to be struck until we have unloaded some of the salaries on the book (Gomes, Keane, Holgate, Davies), especially the expiring contracts of Mina & Allan. Clubs remotely interested in them might not even show their intents until much closer to the Transfer Deadline to make their approaches (mostly to try knocking the prices down but some teams would only know by then whether they are qualified for European Football), so we can fully expect our hands being tied until then.

Is anyone able to explain why we are being linked to Cornet who has been in the Prem League for 1 season and only managed 26 appearances and scored a not exceptional 9 goals for the princely sum of £17.5M from a relegated club who reportedly only paid Lyon about £13M in August 2021.

Are we seriously after this guy or is it just media talk? Bearing in mind our financial position, there has got to be better deals out there for players whose stats are more encouraging, hasn't there? I'm afraid I don't understand.

In comparison

Cornet (winger / full back) 26 app - 9 goals £17.5m
Richarlison (forward) 30 app - 10 goals £60.0m

Both age 25

I would imagine Cornet would be on less salary

Doesn't seem a bad bit of business to me

Peter, I think you inadvertently answered your own question.

Nine goals in 26 games for a relegated team in your first season. What would you value him at?

Bear in mind Richarlison’s stats, more central position, added experience in the league and the fee we got for him
