Wolves 2 - 3 Everton

Everton extended their winning form in quite brilliant fashion against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday afternoon, with three excellent goals, despite two poor ones conceded.

The Blues will, however, miss Jarrad Branthwaite, Adam Aznou and Nathan Patterson for the trip to Molineux.

And David Moyes selects a potentially powerful midfield trio to feed Beto.

First Half

Garner pased it back to Pickford who hoofed it up to Beto in an all-too familiar kick-off routine. Garner swung in a great deep cross that looked perfect for Beto but he avoided heading it.

Arias rolled a low shot to Pickford from distance. But some lovely play by Everton on the left saw Gaerner and Grealish combining nicely, Mykolenko winning an early corner.

A great ball in from Garner was half-cleared, Everton working it around well, then Mykolenko to Grealish on the left and his headed cross was perfect for Beto to glance his header home. A really high quality goal.

Everton had pressed forward with real intent and it paid off brilliantly. They had to defend then but did it competently. It was a bit scrappy for a while as Wolves tried to respond, Everton unable to hold the ball for long.

Beto took a long ball from Pickford brilliantly on his foot but then played it way backwards. Still, Everton looked quite confident until Gomes was too clever for Dewsbury-Hall who had to foul him for the game's first yellow card, the free-kick driven.

Wolves got some rare possession but the cross in was straight to Pickford. A nice ball forward to Beto was allowed to bounce by him and the defender was in sharply — Beto needs to be a lot stronger!

But a simple-looking Wolves attack suddenly turned with a great ball in behind from Munetsi on the wing and Hwang, who zoomed past Tarkowski, was picked out with precision, Pickford out late to challenge with no chance to stop it.

The game changed in an instant and now Everton looked all at sea, giving Wolves space to get crosses in. Grealish did his best, drawing a foul from Andre. It then a bit spicy when the tackles started flying in.

Ndiaye did great to force a ball to Gana who fed Grealish but he wanted too much time to get the ball on is left foot. However, his shot won a corner but it was cleared this time, and Wolves won a corner for themselves off Mykolenko. Agbadou's acrobatic shot flew over the Everton bar.

Beto was fouled and from it, a wonderful 1-2 between Dewsbury-Hall and Grealish should have been the second goal… but the follow-up made sure with some glorious football from Beto, and Dewsbury-Hall, who squared the ball across, Beto stepping over brilliantly to allow a simple finish for Iliman Ndiaye following in behind him. Just beautiful from Everton!

Munetsi pushed Mykolenko off the ball and did not like the referee calling it a foul. Ndiaye and Dewsbury-Hall tried more intricate passing but it was not quite right. Andre chased Grealish backwards before fouling him. Dewsbury-Hall's deep crossfield deadball sailed over Tarkowski and out of play.

Dewsbury-Hall called for a handball, the Wolves free-kick and follow-up cleared twice by Tarkowski, setting up Ndiaye for a drive forward but he failed to pass the ball wide and was eventually blocked off by a rolling cul-de-sac of gold shirts.

The teams played out 3 added minutes with no real threats, after some brilliant football from Everton.

Second Half

Wolves began the second half with some real drive and intent but Grealish was really getting into it now. And he got forward with a bit of space around him, picking out Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall running ahead of him, but his first-time strike was just astounding. A simply brilliant shot into the top corner, off the base of the bar — the best goal of three brilliant strikes… so far.

That fantastic effort really took the sting out of the game as Everton locked in and looked to play out the final third of the game, Wolves making three changes after the hour mark.

But a great through ball to Munetsi needed brisk action from Pickford to boot it clear. Some exquisite play from Grealish released Mykolenko in space but his cross was behind Beto. Ndiaye was having a ball out wide right as Everton played confident possession play to destroy the home side's spirit... until Tarkowski was forced to play it into touch.

Gana out wide on the touchline got his cross all wrong and that allowed Wolves to come forward, Hugo Bueno going down under pressure from Ndiaye, Everton perhaps getting away with one, but Bueno sprung back up and that could be the reason it wasn't given as a penalty.

Everton finally came under some pressure, but it was resisted and Ndiaye was fouled wide right by Hugo Bueno who hurt himself in the process.  The free kick after a slew of substitutions found O'Brien but he could only glance it wide.

Grealish kept being fouled. But Everton were not using the free-kicks well and they surrendered a really stupid goal, Gomes dashing in behind the Everton defence, Mykolenko manily at fault this time, to plunder a second goal that should never have been allowed.

Mykolenko did well to shield the ball from Gomes and win a free-kick. But Wolves kept pushing forward, Garner there to stop a dangerous advance. Another dangerous attack forced O'Brien to head behind for a Wolves corner, Barry clearing but only as far as Lopez, his shot blocked.

Bellegarde cuts in on Dewsbury-Hall, giving up an advanced free-kick wide left. Garner powered it in but a defensive header eventually found Iroegbunam, whose shot was blocked.

Grealish was tiring and Alcaraz replaced him with a few minutes left, plus 6 added on. From a long Pickford clearance, Ndiaye drove in but Barry was slow to anticipate the ball in to him.

Wolves attacked again, and they almost got an equaliser, Bellegarde lashing in a shot that Pickford parried to Lopez but he drove his shot wide. Moyes swapped out Ndiaye for Coleman in what should be the final minute, Everton winning a late free-kick that should be the end of it.

And Michael Oliver finally blew the whistle on a fantastic Everton win, albeit cutting things close with two soft goals allowed.

Wolves: Sa, S Bueno, Agbadou, Gomes, Tchatchoua (64' López), Andre (64' Gomes), Gomes, H Bueno (76' Wolfe), Munetsi, Hwang (76' Kalajdzic), Arias (64' Bellegarde).

Subs not Used: Krejcí, Johnstone, Doherty, Mosquera.

Everton: Pickford, O’Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Mykolenko, Gueye (76' Iroegbunam), Garner; Ndiaye (90+6' Coleman), Dewsbury-Hall [Y:16'], Grealish (88' Alcaraz), Beto (76' Barry).

Subs not Used:  Travers, Armstrong, Onyango, McNeil, Dibling.

Think most people would have predicted this XI
Robert Tressell
2 Posted 30/08/2025 at 13:57:51
Fairly predictable. Exposes lack of pace throughout the side so likely to huff and puff against an inferior side - because we’re too deep and narrow - with too little pace and running in behind.

Should still win though

Slightly surprised to see Beto start. I guess Moyes thinks Wolves being at home will push up and attack leaving space on behind.

Beto is shit when it's played to feet so has to be the thinking.

Bobby @ 4, so you want Robert to lie and say the team is packed full of pace?

Looking at that team, I have to agree with Robert. But I also think we can win the game

Robert, if we had signed Tchatchua who was Thelwell’s target in the previous window, we would have got a speedy player. Apparently, the fastest player in La Liga last season. Will be interesting to see how Mykolenko copes with him.

Dewsbury-Hall has some pace to run past Beto.

Pace in Barry and Dibbling from the bench against tiring legs isn't a bad option either.

Bar Branthwaite, I'd think most blues would pick that side as their first choice.

13 Posted 30/08/2025 at 14:23:31
I would never start with Beto away from home. We usually get pinned back early on and he's not a player who can receive the pressure with hold-up play whereas Barry, I think, could.

And any quick break is likely to result in the ball bouncing off Beto. He looks fast and strong when given the chance to run onto a ball but otherwise he reduces the team to 10 men.

It’s nice to have options on the bench, most teams make about 4 changes in the second half now and we’ve actually got a bit of talent to bring on for a change!

Always tough away, would be nice to get a win on the road in the bag early in the season. COYB!!

Alan J Thompson
49 Posted 30/08/2025 at 15:57:13
We started well pressing high and got an early goal but then Dewsbury -Hall, Gana and Garner seemed to drop back a touch which seemed to negate the high press and Wolves started looking for their pace merchant. The Ref then seemed to give them everything, we touched them a free kick was given where he didn't seem to notice when Wolves players did it, the Dewsbury-Hall yellow being an example.

When we got men forward again we got the second as we look a lot more dangerous when Wolves can't put 2 or 3 players on Grealish or Ndiaye..

Dewsbury-Hall in particular but also Gana and Garner need to lift their games and we still seem to play set pieces to Tarkowski beyond the back post.

Everton certainly know how to get your heart beating a bit faster.

Ndiaye was given offside which he was when the ball was played forward but it then struck a Wolves defender and I always thought that, as the last man to play the ball, he played Ndiaye onside.

Then Dewsbury-Hall with a magnificent finish looked to seal the game until we dropped back and allowed Wolves a second with slack defending by several players.

I also wondered about subbing Ndiaye and Grealish as they were the two players capable of holding the ball up but we got home in the end.

Kevin Molloy
90 Posted 30/08/2025 at 17:16:37

Good performance but lots to improve on. Mykolenko falling asleep for their second was terrible. The Ndiaye incident / tackle could easily been given as far as I can see, luck on our side in this game as in the last.

Grealish has been just fantastic for us to date, he is real quality in many aspects of the game – let's all hope he keeps it up.

I think Coleman should have been on sooner – we definitely need a decent right back – if we can't get a player that will make a difference, then okay… but it should be a priority!

Next couple of league games will be huge tests for Moyes and this squad — dare to dream! COYB.

We played brilliantly, but both goals conceded were really, really poor. We all shout about needing a right-back — we do, but in the pre-season and again today, two goals right through the middle of the defence.

Tarkowski is off the boil, Branthwaite really missed, no one tracking the centre of midfield runners.

A really good win but the best thing was that the players looked as though they were really enjoying it. What a difference Grealish is.

Tom Bowers
94 Posted 30/08/2025 at 17:24:18
Grealish has been a revelation and unfortunately Moyes not starting him against Leeds gave us no outlet from the start in that game.

However, what magic he weaves and I have always said he makes players commit and things happen.

Moyes has to consider what to do with this back four.

I don't like heavyweights especially on a wet surface.

What they need is a class sweeper like Jagielka.

The current back line is all at sea sometimes and could have cost us a game we were clearly the better in.

Colin Glassar
95 Posted 30/08/2025 at 17:25:42
Loads of work still to do, Christine. The understanding between the players is still not there. Hopefully, over the international break they can work on this and get Branthwaite fit as well as a RB and cover for Gana.

Haaland on Snapchat: ‘Jack De Bruyne does it again for Everton’

Alan J #89, no, the ball hitting a defender isn't the same thing as him 'playing' the ball, and so it doesn't change the position. It was a clear offside.

Mike(#96); I'll take your word for it but I thought that these days he couldn't be given offside until he played the ball and wasn't in the keepers line of sight if he didn't play it, the on the field but not interfering bit.

Superb going forward, should have won comfortably, but for amateur defending. We need a fullback and defensive midfielder before the window shuts. Just watched Tim Sherwood analysis on Sky, said we were brilliant going forward, Jack and Ndiaye outstanding and couldn't believe how good KDH was, and also praised Beto and Moyes, for me I thought Garner played his best game..

What a pleasure it was to watch some of that attacking play. We have some very good footballers up front, it would be great to have a classy defender to supplement them.

Some of our performance today was reminiscent of 1977 and 78, à la Dobson and Thomas, we were just short of a Latchford. It was a game we should aspire to winning 1-5, but we have weaknesses in defence which told, and may catch us out in the coming weeks without reinforcement.

For now, though, well done Blues, made up for everyone who travelled.

Great result, but much to improve. O’Brien is no right back. And Mykolenko is still feeling his way back to fitness.

But some of our forward play in the 1st half was sublime. For some strange reason, we then started to sit back and invited pressure from Wolves.

Garner was my MoTM, he was terrific in breaking up play and getting the ball forward. Followed closely by KDH, Grealish and Ndiaye. Things are suddenly looking a lot better. Well done to Moyes and the owners.

A work in progress still but so so much better. Some lovely bits of play and three really good goals. Some flaws in the side which are all well known but we look good. Grealish is enjoying his football and it’s a credit to him after stepping down from City. Long may it continue.

I think it was that more they were 3-1 down at home, and made a host of subs. 3 defeats on the spin, it was shit or bust for the wolves manager in a game they'd fancy at the start of the day.

Haven't read the whole thread, but what do people think was the defensive error for the first Wolves goal? It was a superb ball into the legendary 'corridor of uncertainty'. Very hard to defend. Are folk questioning the cross coming in at all?

As I keep saying, we actually need 2 full backs, one RB (obviously) which would allow O'Brien to play alongside Jarrod and a better LB- Myko is really only a useful understudy. They would be the priorities.

It is possible Ake would be available and he would be ideal, also covers LCB if Jarrod is out. There are numerous RB possibilities, Maitland Niles, Fisher, Martinez (who Arsenal are in for but he won't get game time with them) or even Munoz who might be interested in the project shaping up. Or even one of plethora of RB's at our friends Roma.

Stuart
Two errors, one is letting the cross come in in the first place, second was Tarks allowing the striker to literally run past him. There at least needed to be a challenge. It was very poor positional play combined with a worrying absence of any pace.

The defenders were asleep for both goals, Stuart. We need to tighten up at the back and be more ruthless in front of goal. But the signs are good.

Great to see proper footballers in the Everton team it’s almost like the days of Ball, Harvey and Kendall.
As everybody has stated if we could sign a defensive midfielder and a right back we would have a ‘complete’ football team.
Wonderful stuff. Can’t wait for the next match.

Credit to Guardiola. Not many people can take a £100M treble winner and convince the world he is Dele Alli 2.0.

But luckily, Moyes wasn't buying it while others splashed tens of millions on inferior players.

Thanks, folks. Stream was dodgy, so I didn't see the build-up. Looked to me like a very hard cross to defend, but fair enough if you think it was poor from us.

Wouldn't surprise me given how dodgy we looked at other times (certainly after each time we conceded). Mykolenko for the second was crap, but I guess he's likely to be rusty.

Tarkowski pointing at Garner for the first to pick up the man.

He misses Branthwaite a lot does Tarkowski.

Liam Mogan

Tarkowski looked like he was pulling a steamship for that goal.

So slow when turned around towards his own goal.

One mistake and some are writing off Mykolenko already.

People are saying we're desperate for a righ-back... very true, but I think we're desperate for a goalscoring centre-forward as well.

Mark Taylor
119 Posted 30/08/2025 at 18:58:45
True, George, but I think they are financially beyond us right now. So the idea is, to make sure they get the best service by having full-backs who are competent attackers and can play the type of balls in that led to their 2 goals. Think DCL when he got loads of goals one season, and he is not a much better striker if at all better than the two we have.

That doesn't mean writing off Mykolenko. He makes a very decent back-up, maybe even first choice against the better sides. But he is pretty ordinary (to be kind) going forward.

Andy 88. Please can you explain yourself?

Less than 2 weeks ago you wrote

“This isn't going to better any time soon, so we are going to have to suck it up. This season is going to be another long hard slog with probably a bottom 7 or 8 finish.
Anyone thinking we could be challenging for Europe is living on another planet, pre-season and last night's debacle proved that. The worrying thing for me last night was that our players didn't look fit, they looked jaded after 30 minutes.“

Today you write:

“The job the manager has done since he returned, nothing short of miraculous — that's gonna stick in the craw of a few on here.

In Moyes we trust, welcome home Dithering Dour Davey.“

Dibling still to come too. Exciting times coming back.

Let's not pick on individual players today please. That was a very good team performance and, apart from the two mistakes for the goals, we looked excellent.

We've got a few weeks rest now till the Villa game. A couple more signings before Monday night and I really feel confident for this season. COYB

Andy Walker,

Yeah, with Dibling in the mix, suddenly we have options on the bench. Meaning Ndiaye, Grealish and Co cannot slack off. Last season, we didn't have options, so the likes of Harrison and McNeil kept their places – wind, rain or shine.

The summer clear-out in terms of numbers wasn't as impactful as has been suggested since half the released players were injured, out on loan, or just lost causes. So in effect, lack of quantity was a problem last season as well as this.

Now, we have made some steps in addressing that while obviously we have greatly improved the quality.

Whilst I accept we need a right-back, let's not forget the brilliant job Jake O'Brien has done so far.

Okay, he wasn't great today, but let's not write him off completely.

Rob Dolby

Stuart 109,

It was a quality ball played in for their equaliser. Maybe Mykolenko was caught out of position but, at the end of the day, it was a good bit of quality from their right midfielder.

Mykolenko was also on his heels for their 2nd; if we had lost or drawn that game, I would be furious with him.

We do need 2 quality full-backs, I am sure Moyes also knows that. For a big lad, O'Brien isn't the bravest and offers little going forward.

I enjoyed the link-up play around their box today, calm minds making good decisions. Even Beto gets some credit for the dummy for our 2nd.

James Garner was my MotM today – he was everywhere tidying up. Not sure we need another holding midfielder.

Earlier in the day Fulham conceded a penalty given by VAR. Gana shoots, it hits the lad on the arm: no penalty. The refs are so inconsistent.

Good week for the Blues. Shame the international break is here.

Andy 120 you're right.

After the Leeds debacle, I was well and truly down, a shocking night and one I couldn't see it getting any better.

But, and I will say this in my defence and it is an excuse, I'd had a few when I posted that.

Admitted that's no excuse for my scurrilous behaviour, so I hope you accept my wholeheartedly apology for coming out with such drivel.

Yes, 1st half against Brighton we rode our luck, but today we should have run away with it.

Andrew, once again, my apologies.

Allright lars, I live in Norfolk and now follow the Blues via the live audio broadcast and the highlights video via my Forever Blue+ membership.

Does anyone know how to permanently remove the video captions? Today's classic samples include "Willerman and Diall the gold scorer, Ken and Juicy Hall the provider".

This owl arse would greatly appreciate any tech help to permanently remove them from all future videos. Ta.

Some wonderful football today, especially between KDH and Grealish. I actually prefer Ndiaye on the right.

I do wish Moyes would stop playing these flair players. Doesn't he know of his reputation?

We got to see a different Garner today. Good players enjoy having good players around them. You can see the lift that he got from having options who will show for the ball and use it well in tight positions.

At our best we're going to be very exciting. What an incredible turnaround with a few transfers.

Andy 134. That’s fair enough, credit to you. I genuinely wasn’t sure whether your post today was sarcastic, clearly it wasn’t. In fairness there were others a week last Monday who were calling for Moyes to be sacked amongst other drama laden stuff. They’ve since posted sweet FA.

Moyes has transformed our team in less than a year. Not just the results but the style of play and level of player. He’s a good manager of that there’s no doubt. We’ll still lose some more games this season, I just hope a degree of perspective and realism is displayed by us all when we do lose. Moyes will make mistakes but he’ll get it right more often than not.

Anyway, have a good evening and we can enjoy MOTD AGAIN!

I’m really happy with the squad development so far. Full back is the obvious problem but people thinking Mykolenko is the answer are deluded, he’s terrible, nowhere near good enough.

I’ve said since he arrived he’s one of the worst players I’ve ever seen arrive for decent money.

Ian Bennett

There will be bumps in the road, but there looks a plan and the players resemble footballers.

Things are improving slowly.

Mike Gaynes
141 Posted 30/08/2025 at 21:38:36
Consider me deluded, Mike. In well over a hundred games Myko has proven himself and then some. When fully healthy (which he is currently not) he is one of the best defensive left backs in the league, and his cross to set up our first goal today was elegant.
Andrew Merrick
142 Posted 30/08/2025 at 21:46:19
Myko is not terrible, but we let Antonee Robinson go, to a former manager...

We have needed two pacey wing backs for years now, and I know I keep looping that one.,.

But that's the past, today is the now, and wow, if we cant celebrate that, what the hell should we do...

We are building the best squad in ages, playing some very engaging entertaining football, I am very happy tonight and I expect most are, celebrate blues!
