Season › 2024-25 › News Merlin Röhl secured on loan Michael Kenrick 01/09/2025 166comments | Jump to last Everton have completed the signing of Merlin Röhl on loan from Freiburg. After failing to tempt Tomas Soucek away from West Ham Utd, David Moyes and the recruitment team have been able to secure the services of the Germany Under-21 international. He has joined on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy, understood to be just over £18M. Despite confident rumours for much of the day claiming this was a 'done deal', confirmation was not forthcoming until more than an hour after the transfer window had closed on Deadline Day. But the news that Harrison Armstrong had been allowed to leave on loan was taken as a signal that this deal was going to happen. Röhl had reportedly been on the Blues’ radar for a significant period and the club decided to act upon it as the deadline approached. Moyes had wanted more players to choose from in the middle for some time and the nervy finale to the game at Wolves on Saturday convinced him something was needed, with Everton looking a lot less coherent after Idrissa Gana Gueye was substituted with 15 minutes still to go for Everton to hang on and secure an important win. While he has played in an attacking role, he is likely to be used in a deeper position by David Moyes, who will want to utilise the German youth international’s physicality and ability to carry the ball. Upon completion of the deal, Röhl said: “I’m really excited and full of joy to sign for Everton. It’s a big club, with great history and great fans. It’s the right time for me to join Everton. It feels like a shifting point for the club. The future looks really good and I’m excited to be part of it. “I’ve watched the evolution of the club closely. With the manager and stadium, there are a lot of positives. I just love to play football and can’t wait to play in front of such passionate fans in such a great stadium. The Everton fans are passionate and demand hard work and that’s what I like as it matches what I can bring. “I see myself as a box-to-box midfielder and I feel I can bring my qualities to this team after having discussions with the manager. I think versatility is a strength of mine and the style of my game will suit the Premier League.” On his ninth summer signing, Moyes said: “We’re really pleased to bring Merlin to Everton. He’s a Germany Under-21 international who will add different qualities to our existing midfield options. He’s an exciting prospect who we’ve followed at the club for some time, and we’re all looking forward to working with him as we continue to build a squad and team at Everton.” Merlin Röhl will wear the No 34 shirt. Disclaimer () Jim Bennings 1 Posted 01/09/2025 at 21:25:08 We all love a late signing let's be honest. This lad is a good age, he's got enough experience of a strong league and looks to have a similar stature to Fellaini.I think he will be Gana's eventual replacement. Colin Glassar 2 Posted 01/09/2025 at 21:26:25 Time for a bit of magic, Merlin. WilkommenNice words from the lad. Jerome Shields 3 Posted 01/09/2025 at 21:41:20 So we got Röhl on loan just before the deadline. A midfielder. I actually expected a few defenders on loanTFG are not into paying out for seasoned players, that is for sure. The average age of the squad is well down on last season. Mal van Schaick 4 Posted 01/09/2025 at 21:42:07 Positive interview from him. He didn't Rohl over talking about Everton. It's been a good window for us. Mike Corcoran 5 Posted 01/09/2025 at 21:52:19 This looks good as they always do on YouTube: Gordon Thompson 6 Posted 01/09/2025 at 21:57:58 Does sky news know about this? Dave Lynch 7 Posted 01/09/2025 at 21:59:19 Any additions to the squad are welcome.Idrissa is a great player but ageing and I see this lad as a natural replacement. Tommy Carter 8 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:01:48 @1 Jim I think Moyes will deploy him like Fellaini. I dont see that this guy will be a defensive player at all and like Fellaini will become a physical attacking threat. I can see that Moyes has made this signing in lieu of a striker and will likely look to play Rohl eventually as an attacking false 9 interchangeably with Illiman NDiaye. Much like how he operated Cahill and Fellaini from around late 2010 - 2012. I cant see that this will completely replace the Beto / Barry spearhead but it will provide the option to do something different. James Marshall 9 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:03:00 I'd never heard of him until today but he looks a handful. Big, pacey, gets about the pitch, can play a pass, chips in with the odd goal too.Very much the type of midfield player Moyes likes, in the Fellaini/Soucek mould. Should do well for us - Davey knows how to coach a player like him, and how to fit him into a good side. Ryan Holroyd 10 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:05:51 Moyes signing these technical players How very dare he sign French and German under 21 internationals and England under 21 internationals Does he not know hes only supposed to sign old players with no flair to fit in with toffeeweb posters views of him Mike Powell 11 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:15:55 And in the men time, did you know Issac as signed for RS, Sky kept that quiet Tony Abrahams 12 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:19:13 MY MY HEY HEY ROCK AND ROHL IS HERE TO STAY🤞 Kieran Kinsella 13 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:20:58 Outside of Hiztleberger have we had any German players before? Cant think of any off the top of my head.As he describes himself he sounds like a younger Soucek which is fine with me. I like Soucek but hes past his prime so I wasnt thrilled at rumors linking him for a large chunk of change. Ryan Holroyd 14 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:22:16 Mustafi and Wessels Kieran James Marshall 15 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:22:35 I met Thomas Hitzelspurger about a month ago in London. A thoroughly decent fella he is too. Brent Stephens 16 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:23:40 Merlin is magic. Liverpool are tragic... Kieran Kinsella 17 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:25:09 RyanCheers I knew there must be others Christy Ring 18 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:25:10 Can play in a number of positions, but hope he can play defensive midfielder, can't expect Gueye to play in every game. Ryan Holroyd 19 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:28:17 Lets hope hes better than them! Pat Kelly 20 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:34:00 Just saw his official signing video. He says um a laut. Think we've done well this window. No complaints. Mark Taylor 21 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:37:55 Odd position to recruit given we have quite a lot of midfielders, but he is the sort of profile of player we should be aiming for and at less than £20m, which is peanuts these days, there is no big expectation being placed on him. Maybe he will surprise us. Maybe it is also part of a plan to convert Jimmy G (back) into a RB. Dale Rose 22 Posted 01/09/2025 at 22:38:14 He looks a handfull in full flight. There again you tube could make the current elderly Mrs Rose move like Simone Biles.. Sean Kelly 23 Posted 01/09/2025 at 23:22:59 Im happy with this window. Its not perfect and we could have done with a starting RB. We are developing a younger squad for the future. Our defence is the same mean defence as last season bar one and hopefully Jarrad will be back soon. We should be targeting a Europe spot and build further in January and next summer to achieve this. Well done to TFG and Moyes. Now lets integrate the new players and push on. If Grealish still has the same impact by Xmas get him signed up. Brent Stephens 24 Posted 01/09/2025 at 23:46:16 "He says um a laut". Pat, that's just brilliant!! Adam Oakensworth 25 Posted 01/09/2025 at 23:47:07 Much stronger squad than this time last year and a much younger age profile. I guess Seamus, OBrien and Garner were deemed enough cover at RB without overpaying for someone not good enough. Was always going to take a few windows to get it all done. No complaints from me Jack Convery 26 Posted 02/09/2025 at 01:39:48 Great to have you here Merlin Rohl. Your one of us now, so get to it. Starting with Villa. Lester Yip 27 Posted 02/09/2025 at 01:57:39 Looks magic on youtube. He's got the awareness to turn the player on first touch and drive forward, can pass and can tackle. Do all the little things quite well like Onana. Maybe less explosive. Interesting signing. This is the type of player we should buy instead of keep looking at your old club with names everyone know about. Craig Scott 28 Posted 02/09/2025 at 02:19:08 Im pleased that were predominantly signing younger players. Shows shrewd investment strategy. Ernie Baywood 29 Posted 02/09/2025 at 02:34:19 Absolutely Craig. It's very clear that there's a strategy and they're determined to stay the course on it. Everyone who has come in is either young and developing, or young enough and can improve the first team. Grealish is the exception but he's a world class player on a loan. I assume that's why we didn't sign a right back. No-one was available that wanted to come to us and who ticked either of those boxes.Compare this to club leadership that managed to shortlist Bielsa and Dyche. What strategy would have those two vying for the same position? Ernie Baywood 30 Posted 02/09/2025 at 02:36:28 Adam, I'd argue Garner is currently the most accomplished right back at the club. With Tim and Merlin... maybe he might get some time there? Jonathan Oppenheimer 31 Posted 02/09/2025 at 03:51:16 Ill preface my comment by saying Im happy enough with this window. We did just about everything we couldve hoped for outside of a right back, though were of course dangerously close to having problems if one of our strikers, OBrien or Mykolenko gets injured — assuming Aznou is not yet ready to start. So Im not complaining, Rome wasnt built in a day and all that. All that said, I cant help but have feelings of deja vu with Merlin thinking back to Gbamin. Up-and-coming youngish athletic midfielder that no one has heard of who has shown potential in the Bundesliga, coming over with big expectations given the fee is not insignificant — even if its a quite a bit lower in todays market than what we paid to get Gbamin. Also, what we need is a replacement for Gana, and he doesnt appear to be that. Im all for depth, and maybe Im wrong here — I sure hope I am — and maybe Garner really will end up at right back, but seems like without injuries hell struggle to get much playing time this year, then again next season if Armstrong comes back firing. The hope is that hes better than Iroebugnam and that he can do a job when there are injuries or in cup matches, but this one doesnt get me all that excited. Or maybe Im just not excited because we needed a defensive central midfielder and a right back and didnt get either one. But Ill trust the guys who brought in KDH and Grealish, and hope theyre right that Barry, Merlin and Aznou are all diamonds in the rough who will shine in the next 1-3 years. Mark Wynne 32 Posted 02/09/2025 at 03:54:59 Box to box? Hoping more for a Fellaini than a Doucoure. Fingers crossed for the lad. Ernie Baywood 34 Posted 02/09/2025 at 04:16:04 Impressive interview from the young man. I'm not sure if anyone really has much insight into him but YouTube makes him look like a pretty powerful midfielder who can play a bit. Sounds like a Moyes type and, doing a bit of research, Moyes managed against him 4 times at West Ham so presumably this signing is something he was very involved in.It does look like he missed half of last season with an ankle injury. Hopefully we've done our due diligence in respect of that. The other side of that is that presumably whenever he was fit he was straight back into a decent Freiburg side. At the age of 22 you would think that means he was well regarded.Although this is a loan, it sounds like we have an obligation to buy unless we're relegated (which we won't be). So he's effectively a permanent signing. What to make of all that? No idea. But I always remember Moyes saying that whenever he managed against Championship teams he noted who he would like to sign if he moved up a level. That's how we went for Cahill. The player seems relatively unknown but I'll back Moyes' judgement. Laurie Hartley 35 Posted 02/09/2025 at 05:37:50 Ernie # 30 & 34. I was very impressed with Garner against Wolves. Dave Abrahams will say I am biased because of where he hails from:) but I reckon he will be our captain in the not too distant future. I also like the way he had a go at Pereira when he got involved on the touch line when one of our lads got clattered. As for Rhol - I liked Fellaini but going by the You Tube videos he's more Beckenbauer. I hope I am right.LinkWhat a footballer he was! Jonathan Oppenheimer 36 Posted 02/09/2025 at 05:54:13 I tried to find some comments from Freiburg supporters and from a small sample size the feeling seemed to be that if he stays healthy and is used properly he could be quite the gem. And they appeared sad to see him go. So that gives me some optimism. Steve Shave 37 Posted 02/09/2025 at 06:25:28 Another good signing, Im delighted with this window. Rohl is highly regarded and could really develop into a very good player. Right age and clearly weve signed him to develop in one of the sitting positions in midfield. Good business, Id have loved us to have got Tete or KWP on a free for that right back berth but I guess they are thinking between the two we have and Garner and OBrien we can survive until January. Now lets think Villa boys! Paul Griffiths 39 Posted 02/09/2025 at 06:39:34 That might be my favourite new player video so far ever, even better than Jack's.What a lovely, unassuming, intelligent, humble person and interview, yet with clear purpose and focus. The right tone; the right words. And, on the pitch, he is pacey, passy – ie, he has a pass in him – physical, and best of all, still, as he modestly says, developing.Whisper it, this might be our best wheeling and dealing of the window for the years to come, or as good as Jack and KDH at any rate. Mike Allison 40 Posted 02/09/2025 at 07:15:35 Hes not a defensive midfielder. My assumption now is that Moyes sees Garner and Iroegbunam as the heirs to that role. Both have the ability and attributes but need to work on the tactical side of the role.Im so glad we signed Röhl rather than Soucek though. Ryan Holroyd 41 Posted 02/09/2025 at 07:34:17 Iroegbunam hasnt the displine to be a defensive midfielder Ian Bennett 42 Posted 02/09/2025 at 07:49:32 I am pleased with the signing. We were linked with him last January, and so I watched him for Germany in the euro 21s. I thought he looked very decent for them, but acknowledge the step up to the Premier league is significant. The big lad that's gone Newcastle caught the eye, but Rohl was very dependable in the middle. He is a fair size, mobile, can travel with the ball and uses his body to push people off the ball rather than go to ground. I see him as an 8, rather than a 6. That to me still leaves us short in that position if theres a negative.Gana, Armstrong, Tim, Rohl, will all be battling it out for that slot in time. Garner is doing well in the 6, but only he can really play that position well.In the Premier league era we have been under cooked in top class box to box midfielders, we could long term be offered Armstrong and Rohl to play as two 8s. Both have the technique, size and pace to be quite a handball in the engine room for the blues. England & German captains? Perhaps one day.The recruitment team bar Grealish, has bought potential, technique and hunger. They've missed some bigger names, but the 9 mark an improvement over the last 5 years. I cant think of many links I've thought oh no.A bit more competition now in the squad. Mcneil, Tim, Alcaraz are going to need to raise their games, or find that they may be making way for other players we need. We were never going to fix everything in one window, and some won't work out. I just hope the majority do.Hopefully this also brings an end to the ridiculous comments that we should of retained Thewell. The signings have been good, they all want to be here, and they seem to buy into this new Everton. Dan Nulty 43 Posted 02/09/2025 at 07:51:09 Interestingly he has also filled in at left back occasionally for Freiburg too. Good luck to him. Sam Hoare 44 Posted 02/09/2025 at 07:54:49 It's an intriguing sigining. Rohl looked a rel gem when he broke through with Ingolstadt in the 21/22 season but the truth is that he has never really kicked on hugely from there and though he was decent in the 23/24 season for Freiburg he's not really hit the heights that people expected him to given his size, athleticism and natural ease on the ball.Part of the problem could be that he has primarily played further forwards, often as a 10 where his work rate and size has helped him win the ball back on occassion but depsite some decent ball striking he has struggled to convert opportunities into goals and assists despite a decent showing in 23/24 with 2 goals and 3 assist in 17 starts. If I'm honest he's not the central midfielder I would have gone for. But it's clear to see why Moyes might like him and how he could be a good fit for the PL especially playing a little further back like he did for Germany U21s where he has put in some better performances.Comparisons with Fellaini and Doucoure are inevitable (if we got the Watford version of Doucoure I'd be thrilled) but the player he reminds me most of is probably Sander Berge who was also highly thought of as a kid but has settled into a fairly run of the mill PL player. Hopefully Rohl can do a little better than that but his first hard task will be breaking into the team ahead of the dependable Gana and the improving Garner. I suspect he may have to wait till injury or AFCON to get his first real run in the first XI. Robert Tressell 45 Posted 02/09/2025 at 07:59:00 We could end up fielding a very tall side one of these days. Not a bad thing.I think Rohl will become a popular signing and better long term than Soucek. Next summer we can sort out other issues. Relief to spend money again finally. Mike Gaynes 46 Posted 02/09/2025 at 08:04:57 Sam, you told me earlier that he wasn't a defensive mid, and yet here you are saying he might be a natural defensive mid!!Personally, I believe that's exactly what Moyes signed him for. Given Gana's age and AFCON absence and Garner's history of a dodgy back, that's where Rohl will get his chance. We've got six attacking mids already -- three signed in this window -- and clearly that's not where his future lies. Ian Bennett 47 Posted 02/09/2025 at 08:11:07 The size is similar to Sander Berge, but Rohls passing range is way better, so for me that's a harsh comparison. Ernie Baywood 48 Posted 02/09/2025 at 08:13:30 It will be interesting to see how Moyes uses him. I'm sure there's a plan. He's definitely got shades of Fellaini about him and I recall Moyes playing Fellaini as a deep lying midfielder to good effect. I also recall him being played pretty much up front behind a midfielder with an eye for a goal. We've got a few of those and I just wonder if that might be a plan B that Moyes has in mind given that our strikers aren't necessarily a guaranteed selection.Supporting Everton is interesting again! Robert Tressell 49 Posted 02/09/2025 at 08:15:51 I think his future lies in being a good quality versatile player, Mike. He may never quite nail down a regular position. I mean that in a good way too. Another player who can be part of a really good squad for 5 to 10 years. Steve Brown 50 Posted 02/09/2025 at 08:21:32 “I see myself as a box-to-box midfielder, and I feel I can bring my qualities to this team after having discussions with the manager,“I think versatility is a strength of mine, and the style of my game will suit the Premier League.”Maybe No.8 rather than a CDM? Sam Hoare 51 Posted 02/09/2025 at 08:23:16 Mike, Ive said the same thing in both posts which is that he hasnt played CDM till this point (except for U21 level) but could be converted there. Hes versatile but I think hell play CM mostly. Anthony Dove 53 Posted 02/09/2025 at 08:53:10 This is the wurst Rohl joke you will see today. Paul Turner 54 Posted 02/09/2025 at 08:57:59 “I see myself as a box-to-box midfielder"With a name like Merlin, he should have a great engine. Could he become the Rolls-Royce of our midfield? John Williams 55 Posted 02/09/2025 at 09:22:41 That video makes him look like Jude Bellingham on steroids? Surely not.Does anyone remember the video on Tosun? Will keep everything crossed that he will be a success. Rob Williamson 56 Posted 02/09/2025 at 09:26:59 Gimme shot of Everton BluesWith just a little Jack and Röhl in the side - just for good measure……Ill get me coat.. Dave Abrahams 57 Posted 02/09/2025 at 09:32:21 Im pleased weve signed another player which makes a good transfer window a better one except for the one position most of us wanted and craved for— well never mind that for now.As for Merlin I havent a clue how good he is—Ill judge him when I see him, he looks like he is a very versatile player which will suit Moyes, I hope he suits the team and us fans.Laurie (45), Laurie you couldnt be more wrong about me and James Garner, Im a big fan of the lad who just gets on with the job and gives his best in whatever position he plays in and the quicker Everton give him a new improved contract the better, yes I see a captain in James too.The only downside I saw to Rohl signing was that Harrison Armstrong would go out on loan, I hope that doesnt happen. James Marshall 58 Posted 02/09/2025 at 09:37:02 Harrison Armstrong going out on loan is exactly what he needs. He's only 18 so will rarely play at Everton. He's gone to Preston to learn how to be a professional playing footballer. Rohl is older and way more experienced so he'll actually play games.Armstrong going out on loan is not a downside, it's an upside. Les Callan 59 Posted 02/09/2025 at 10:00:28 Lets hope hes better than Fellaini. Minik Hansen 60 Posted 02/09/2025 at 10:05:20 The fact that we signed him from Freiburg makes it exciting, as they did relatively great finishing 5th in the Bundesliga, qualified to the Europa League. While he had limited playing time due to injuries, he must've played a crucial part in the season. Dave Abrahams 61 Posted 02/09/2025 at 10:19:09 Lester 27, Less explosive than Onana? Well, they'd better throw a bucket of ice-cold fuckin' water over him before he gets on the pitch and make sure he's bleedin' awake! Andrew Ellams 62 Posted 02/09/2025 at 10:26:40 For those of us who are touchy about getting a bit older, this lad was born the same week Moyes made his first ever Everton signing (Joseph Yobo). Brian Harrison 63 Posted 02/09/2025 at 10:41:39 Dave, I was having a nice morning and then you bring up Onana – I thought I had left that subject alone a while back.I was listening to a football agent this morning and he was asked about the transfers of Isak and Guehi and should Guehi have kicked up a fuss like Isak? Worryingly, he said he absolutely should have, and went on to say this will now become the norm where players who want a move refuse to play for their club until they get what they want, like both Wissa and Isak.So will this mean at some time in the coming months does this become something we might get from Branthwaite and Ndiaye, and how do clubs protect themselves from this becoming the norm? The beneficiaries will be the top clubs who have all the money and all the power; for the rest of the clubs, it will be very difficult to challenge their superiority. Clive Rogers 64 Posted 02/09/2025 at 11:18:43 Dave, 61, agreed. Onana was a big disappointment. Good at keeping possession in the middle of the pitch, but nothing else. No end product. Not half as good as he thought he was. Benjamin Dyke 65 Posted 02/09/2025 at 11:32:36 I know absolutely nothing about this kid but I will say that, after listening to his first interview, he and his family deserve an immense about of credit. He came across as a thoroughly nice guy, clear about what he brings, grateful for where he is, great story about why he chose No 34 — and all articulated amazingly well in his second language. Looking forward to seeing him play now. Tom Bowers 66 Posted 02/09/2025 at 12:07:12 This could be a key signing for the middle of the park where we are a bit lightweight. He is tall and young so it will add to our prowess defending corners and free-kicks at both ends. These astute new additions to the squad make me more optimistic about this season's prospects, so let's hope it continues against Aston Villa. George Cumiskey 67 Posted 02/09/2025 at 12:13:05 The two great things Dyche did for us were keeping us up after getting docked 10 points and getting £50M for Onana, unbelievable deal. 👏 Raymond Fox 68 Posted 02/09/2025 at 12:39:00 Ditto what Ben @ 65 says.He certainly looks the part, if he is half as good as his vid, he will be a very big asset indeed.I would think he'll be on a lot of female supporters' walls too. Laurie Hartley 69 Posted 02/09/2025 at 12:40:04 Dave # 57 - sorry Dave - I was pulling your leg. Garner will get better with those three (four😉) in front of him. The lad has an eye for a pass.On Rohl - I just watched his interview. What a terrific young man. Things are looking up. Tony Abrahams 70 Posted 02/09/2025 at 12:40:58 A defensive minded, disciplined midfielder was my second choice after a marauding right back, so it will be interesting to see if Merlin can play this role! Not many of us knew who this kid was yesterday, so as well as being happy he's come to us instead of the rumoured Soucek, it will be interesting to see where he ends up playing for Everton?Hopefully he‘s allowed to play in his best position and hopefully he really kick-on, in whatever that position, might be! Tommy Carter 71 Posted 02/09/2025 at 12:50:02 @67 George. I remember someone doing an interview about Onana when he was an Everton player. Might have been Tarkowski. Glowing about how much of a beast he was and physically he was the fastest, strongest and could run the furthest. Didnt mention anything about his footballing ability though. Which I think is quite limited. Kevin Molloy 72 Posted 02/09/2025 at 13:11:42 George yes it's easy to forget what a horrible situation Dacha had to deal with. We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude, the crap footy notwithstanding. no doubt Sam is right, he has gone off the boil a bit. That's probably why the fee is quite low for a German youth international, but like with the other deals I'm very confident Moyes will improve him. And yes I expect he has been selected to eventually replace Idrissa even if they play different styles. Sam Hoare 73 Posted 02/09/2025 at 13:35:21 Onana may not have been as good as he thought he was but he was still pretty good and would walk into our team currently. Dont forget he was a major part of a team that only missed out on Champions League by goal difference last season. If Rohl achieves the same for us well all be chuffed! Mike Corcoran 74 Posted 02/09/2025 at 13:46:27 Merlin would fit right in with the kids round here with his ketwig. Just needs a Northface bubble, a pair of ‘shit meself grey joggers, some 110s and a balaclava. Seriously though, looks a good prospect Tom Bowers 75 Posted 02/09/2025 at 13:57:46 So mega-billionaires RS are buying another Premiership. Is there any end to their bankroll? So many overpriced players in the transfer window.Everton won't win the league but they deserve accolades for all the good deals. I think we got the best of the deal.He is going to be exeptional. To say Onana would walk into our team is nonsense, we stitched up Villa for £50m for a sideways passer who doesnt change games. Sam Hoare 80 Posted 02/09/2025 at 14:09:22 Dave, I'm referring to what Onana helped Villa achieve. You don't fancy 6th and only goal difference away from Champions League?!To be honest I'd be more than happy if Rohl achieved what Onana did for us too; ie becoming a mainstay in the team and being sold for 20m profit. That's always a sign that the player has done well.Martin, of course a fit Onana would walk into our team. He's definitely better than James Garner and probably as good as Gana as well these days. Michael Bennet 81 Posted 02/09/2025 at 14:11:22 Just been watching toffee tv and the lads rekon the bundesliga is weak as piss and the players are alot more lightweight than Premier league players, and he will need to work with the lads for a bit to get up to speed, but time will tell I suppose, what you guys rekon about the German league...over the years not many of them has pulled any trees up over here. Mike Corcoran 82 Posted 02/09/2025 at 14:14:01 Good to hear from you George. Cant go wrong with Nick and Van either. Way to Blue ! Mike Corcoran 83 Posted 02/09/2025 at 14:15:57 Sam, Id take Garner over Onana any day. Sam Hoare 84 Posted 02/09/2025 at 14:25:10 Mike, you're probably not alone. But I wonder is there a personality bias that comes in there? Garner is extremely likeable, a no-nonsense reliable player that appeals for a number of reasons. Whereas Onana can seem to walk around with an air of entitlement as though he should only be playing for Real Madrid. Many Evertonians will warm to Garner over Onana. But if both stay fit I'd wager only one will go on to win multiple caps for their country (less competition for Onana admittedly) and play for a team in the CL. Talent wise the Belgian is ahead; though injury curtailed his progress last season and may continue to do so. But who knows, Garner has certainly started this season well. Andrew Clare 85 Posted 02/09/2025 at 14:27:05 Great to hear you George. Bill Griffiths 86 Posted 02/09/2025 at 14:48:46 Hi George, really great to see your post. What did you think of The Stadium then? Dave Abrahams 87 Posted 02/09/2025 at 15:36:31 Sam (80) No disrespect but Im not interested in what Onana did at Villa, being honest I never saw many of Villas games but the little I saw of him there was no difference in how he played at Everton in fact it was quite possible he wasnt even playing in some of those games because he went missing that often I sometimes forgot he was playing for the Blues when he was here—mind you I always knew he had been playing at the end of the game or when he won a bleedin throw in, urging the crowd to cheer us on and he was always the cheerleader then, I wish hed have used that much energy during the game.I didnt like Iwobi because he was a shirker, jumping out of 60-40 tackles in his favour but he was a lot better than Obleedinana. We are aware that at least 1 position was not brought in at RB, but overall the team looks a lot stronger than previous seasons. Frank Fearns 93 Posted 02/09/2025 at 15:54:27 Dave 87 Onana went missing often because he was very adept at putting the opposition between him and the ball. Very rarely created space to receive the ball. Best bit of business Everton did getting rid of him. He wouldnt stand a chance of getting in the current team - Moyes too canny a Manager. Paul Hewitt 98 Posted 02/09/2025 at 16:19:56 Michael @81. I watch loads of the Bundesliga ( it's by far my favourite league) and it a terrific league. Sure it's not as physical as the premier League, but no other league is. It's technically better and it's far more entertaining. I don't see this lad having a problem fitting in given time to settle. He's got a good engine and can get around the pitch, good with the ball at his feet and not afraid to go past a man. It's a great signing in my opinion. Sam Hoare 101 Posted 02/09/2025 at 16:39:55 Dave, Im not expecting you to change your mind but I think its relevant when debating a players quality to point out that hes gone on to be a mainstay in a team higher up the table than us. Something both Iwobi and Onana did. Strongly suggesting they werent the issue at Everton or at least that they had qualities you may have missed.I find the description of Iwobi as a ‘shirker absolutely flabbergasting but weve had those arguments before so no need to redo. David Bromwell 102 Posted 02/09/2025 at 16:42:02 Can anybody tell me what has happened to Harry Tyrer ?He has had a number of really good seasons out on loan but was not apparently considered for one of our squad goalkeeper places. The path into the first team for our youngsters continues to be very difficult, young Dixon ? Is another example and he plays in a position where we have little cover. Manager David Moyes remained keen to strengthen his midfield options, mindful of Idrissa Gueyes likely participation in the Africa Cup of Nations from the middle of December and into January, and wanted to add more height and physicality in the centre of the park. At 6ft 3in (191cm), it was decided that Rohl was the man.Everything happened quickly. The 23-year-old played for Freiburg in their 4-1 defeat at Cologne on Sunday evening before returning to the south-western German city in preparation for an early-morning flight via private jet from nearby Basel, on the other side of the Swiss border, to Liverpool. From there, it was a relatively short hop to Evertons training ground in Halewood. The loan for the rest of this season, which features an obligation to buy at around €20million (£17.4m; $23.3m at current rates), provided Everton are not relegated this season, was done before 7pm yesterday. It was announced just over two hours later, after Everton had received Football Association and FIFA clearance.Rohl would be the only incoming of a deadline-day otherwise notable for the departures of youngsters Youssef Chermiti and Harrison Armstrong.Striker Chermiti joined Scottish side Rangers for an initial £8million plus potential add-ons, reuniting with former Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell, the man who had brought him to Goodison Park from Portugals Sporting CP two years ago. Talks had started over a potential loan, with clubs in Englands Championship, Germany and Spain having registered an interest. Rangers, though, were the only suitors willing to pay a permanent fee for the Portuguese, who was not part of Moyes immediate plans, and Everton decided to take the money to reinvest it in Rohl. The addition of a midfielder in Rohl paved the way for the highly-rated Armstrong to join Preston North End on loan. Courted by most of the Championship, it was felt that the 18-year-olds development would be best served by regular minutes.Preston appealed due to its north-west of England location, around 30 miles from Liverpool, and proximity to Moyes home in the nearby seaside town of Lytham, meaning he could personally keep a keen eye on Armstrongs progress at the club who gave him his first crack at management in 1998. Their head of recruitment, the former Everton youngster James Wallace, had pushed hard for the move. Those three deals would be Evertons final bits of business in a summer of much change at the club. Defensive options were assessed right up to the close of the window but the decision was taken to stay with what they had — the belief being that they have made themselves considerably stronger. In total, they have spent around £110million this summer on nine new players and committed to approximately £45m in further fees, provided all clauses are met. Its a sea-change after the years of austerity, but much needed, given the scale of the task Everton faced at the end of last season. There was always a sense that this would be a challenging window for Everton. With 15 players, including loanees, out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, the belief internally at the club was that the summer would involve an unprecedented rebuild for an established Premier League side. Moyes would later argue that it was “impossible to repair all of the damage” in one window. For the first time since the early days of previous owner Farhad Moshiri almost a decade ago, Everton had money after The Friedkin Groups December takeover, but the club were undergoing rapid and widespread change behind the scenes.Thelwells departure and the arrival of new chief executive Angus Kinnear from Leeds United had both been well trailed, but the exit of head of recruitment Dan Purdy represented a curveball. Kinnear was putting his new recruitment setup in place but some personnel, such as Manchester Citys director of scouting and recruitment James Smith, only officially joined towards the end of the window. While the network below Purdy was kept largely intact, and played a role in the identification of Rohl, plus fellow signings Thierno Barry and Adam Aznou, the new hierarchy was afforded relatively minimal time to do the early groundwork with players and their agents thats usually needed to convince them to join.Everton set the bar high. Maybe too high, according to some in the game, who like others spoken to for this article talked on condition of anonymity to protect relationships, although the club would no doubt counter that ambition and quality were needed. Either way, the result was a series of early setbacks as key targets, particularly on the right wing, went elsewhere or stayed put. A medical was scheduled for Kenny Tete, as his Fulham deal was about to expire, but the west London club improved their offer of a new one and the right-back decided to re-sign with them. The search for a right-winger was even more troublesome. Top target Francisco Conceicao of Porto picked Juventus, while Johan Bakayoko went from PSV to RB Leipzig and Lyons Malick Fofana held out for Champions League interest, despite Evertons willingness to match his wage demands, and has ended up staying at the French club.Everton felt they had a decent chance of signing Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich until Tottenham Hotspur intervened and offered the Portuguese midfielder Champions League football. They also attempted to beat Benfica to Richard Rios of Palmeiras at the eleventh hour, but the Colombia international midfielder had his mind set on a move to Portugal.Moyes, short of bodies for the first part of pre-season, became increasingly frustrated and voiced his concerns publicly. It appeared as though his comments were intended to force the new recruitment team, comprised of head of player trading Nick Hammond and head of football strategy and analytics Chris Howarth, into action. Moyes played a hands-on role in the new setup, assessing targets and engaging in talks with players.Evertons early business had been solid enough, but it needed to go further. They had been open to retaining free-agent duo Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the right terms, but in each case there was too wide a gap for the parties to bridge in talks. It was assumed Doucoure was heading to Saudi Arabia (which he eventually did, joining Neom) and would more than double his Everton salary of around £100,000. Calvert-Lewin wanted a significant raise on his £90,000 a week wages of last season and a long-term deal, and had felt his unattached status would advance his chances of earning a move to an elite club. He has now signed for promoted Leeds United.A deal was lined up for Brighton & Hove Albions Adam Webster in the event of fellow centre-back Michael Keane leaving upon the expiration of his deal this summer. But Moyes and Kinnear wanted to retain at least some of the out-of-contract players for continuity purposes, and Keane is seen as a good influence around the camp.Everton prioritised an extension for centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, who had two years plus a club option for a further 12 months, on his deal, after interest from Tottenham in January and again in the early summer. The process started soon after the end of last season and ended with Branthwaite signing a new long-term deal, more than doubling his wages of around £50,000 a week and making him one of the squads top earners. The left-footed centre-back has become one of the most coveted players in Europe - tying him to a five-year deal is a coup for Everton. The Athletic can reveal that an enquiry from last seasons Champions League finalists Inter for Iliman Ndiaye, valuing the Senegal forward at around £40million, was immediately rejected.Although a right-winger continued to prove elusive, other areas of concern got ticked off.Carlos Alcaraz joined on a permanent £12.5million deal from Flamengo after a successful loan for the second half of last season, adding depth in midfield. Barry, Aznou and Mark Travers enhanced their options up front, at left-back and in goal, respectively. Moyes has been clear that he sees Barry and Aznou as ones for the future. Aznou, 19, is intended to be a more attacking option than first-choice left-back Vitalii Mykolenko, with a higher ceiling. Likewise, 22-year-old Barry with Beto. The Frenchman was tracked along with Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade and, while also a more obviously attainable target than the German, was someone Moyes felt could dovetail well with Beto, providing similar elements in games. Woltemade had initially appealed to some of the recruitment team as a genuinely distinct option, but he came at a much higher price, eventually joining Newcastle United for just shy of £70million. Everton needed their budget to stretch as far as possible, ruling out the prospect of mega-money signings. Those deals were necessary for squad depth, but big areas of need, like right-winger, remained unresolved.Moyes had expressed a desire for some of this summers new signings to be “Premier League ready”. He admired Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, whod been a January target, while the club had made regular checks on Jack Grealishs situation throughout. There was a belief that both players were attainable, with positive noises emerging over Grealishs interest in a move, but Everton were initially left playing the waiting game while Chelsea and Manchester City respectively added to their squads.Eventually, Chelsea sanctioned Dewsbury-Halls exit after weeks of talks. Soon after, Grealish agreed to become the summers marquee signing, with Everton picking up around three-quarters of his £300,000 City wages in a loan package worth £12million.Grealishs desire to make the switch paved the way for the deal to happen and meant complex issues such as image rights were overcome with relative ease. Moyes intervention had been crucial. The manager was often called upon to make the final sales pitch to would-be signings, and he sold the project to Grealish, offering to make him the main man in the team and help revive his hopes of a return to the England setup ahead of next years World Cup.Finally, as the window headed into its final week, Tyler Dibling joined from Southampton as a new right-winger.Everton had initially walked away from talks due to the disparity between Southamptons valuation of the teenager and theirs. A bid of £32million including add-ons had been rejected, with the Championship clubs counter-offer pricing the player at over £50m. It also included a significant sell-on clause, irrespective of profit. Diblings desire for the move meant Southampton ended three weeks of impasse and came back to the table. Talks resumed on the afternoon of Friday, August 22, and a deal was concluded by the Monday. A key issue had been addressed at an initial £35m fee.Everton continued to search for right-back options. They mulled over approaches for Leicester Citys James Justin, now at Leeds, and free agent Kyle Walker-Peters, who joined West Ham, but were not sold on either. Lyon utility player Ainsley Maitland-Niles was lower down their list, but the French club had lost too many players already this summer to part with another. So Everton pivoted. With Jake OBrien, Seamus Coleman, Nathan Patterson and even James Garner capable of playing on the right side of their back four, they looked at adding cover in the centre of it instead. Manchester Citys Manuel Akanji was on the market and an attractive option, but the Switzerland international made it clear he wanted Champions League football and has now joined Inter. Aston Villa won the race for free-agent former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof late on.Had they secured cover, either at right-back or in central defence, Patterson almost certainly would have been granted a temporary move away. Toulouse and, later on, Sevilla expressed an interest in taking the Scot on loan, but he will now stay to fight for his place. A replacement for Chermiti was not sought either, with Dibling and Ndiaye both seen as options in central attacking areas if needed. Despite the addition of Rohl, they still lack a like-for-like replacement for Gueye, who turns 36 this month, in central midfield, too. The German is more of a No 8 who has rarely played deeper. There appears little doubt, however, that Everton are stronger after this summers window. Much stronger, perhaps.Speaking after his sides 3-2 loss to them at Molineux on Saturday, a game in which the quality of Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall came to the fore, Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Vitor Pereira described Moyes men as a different proposition this season. In the austerity years towards the end of Moshiris time, Everton fans became used to relegation battles and penny-pinching in the market. Under the Friedkins, those days appear over for now. Finally, supporters can look up instead of down. After a window like no other, Everton head into the rest of their 2025-26 season with renewed optimism and fresh momentum. How quickly the tide can turn. Tony Abrahams 119 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:20:52 I wrote a post today in reply to Tommy C@67 about Onana, but it must not have went through. It was a bit longwinded, but it was basically saying that for a player with all the attributes that Tarkowski, praises, how come I have never seen Onana, take the game by the scruff of the neck and drive his team forward? (Ive seen him do it in little glimpses (remember him doing it against Arsenal, and then watching him blowing for tugs, for the next five minutes) but after reading a couple of posts from a longtime ToffeeWeb poster, my advice to Onana, would be that if he wants to really succeed, then he could do with lending a little bit of heart, willpower and spirit, from a man who possesses it by the bucketload. You are an example to everyone George, because you never stop fighting mate. Im glad you got inside the new stadium last week, and I hope you have left a little bit of your Evertonian spirit inside the ground, for the days when the team needs it the most💙 David West 120 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:23:28 Seems we were at the limit for spending then. Looks stronger, quicker & more dynamic than Garner or Gana. Could turn out to be a great signing. Dave Abrahams 121 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:25:58 Sam (101)I dont think its a case of changing my mind, I can see Iwobi is now a different player with Fulham and he had his good moments with the Blues as well as his many cock ups causing goals and chances for the opposition. If you find my summary of Iwobi as a shirker absolutely flabbergasting what else can you call a man who consistently pulled out of very winnable tackles or pulled up just short of an opposition player with the ball, you went to those matches Sam or saw them on TV so Id find it absolutely flabbergasting if you never noticed that.As for Onana I saw one or two games where wasnt too bad or okay, one game vArsenal I think where he had a very good game but mostly he went missing for long periods of the game and offered very little to help the team— As one poster said he was a sub for many games when Dyche had a good spell, one of them was the 2-0 victory over Liverpool and he came on and with his first touch gave the ball away in our own penalty area nearly giving Liverpool a chance of getting back into the game, I wont mention that egotistical bleedin ‘ penalty he took that lost us a league cup tie, If he is a mainstay with Villa Id be surprised but if he is fit and playing now it doesnt look like the team is doing very well.Sam I always take an interest in your posts and I know you read mine— I think weve agreed with each other more than once or twice and Im sure we will again but never ever over Onana. Sam Hoare 122 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:29:42 Certainly agree with your last paragraph Dave! Go well. Billy Shears 123 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:29:46 What's our Subs bench worth now...£200 million!!!Little by little we are improving...Big time! Christy Ring 124 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:37:36 Sam, I don't think Onana would walk back into our team ahead of Garner, who was immense against Wolves. Onana started well for Villa last season, but he wasn't always a certain starter for Villa? Peter Moore 125 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:40:02 A loan with option to buy is a good thing in my view, as it must be motivating for the player to earn the permanent move. When it is an 'obligation' that sound less incentivising. I don't know what flexibility or not applies if a player doesn't work out though in the 'obligation' case. Paul Hewitt 126 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:45:07 Aznu playing for the under 21's tonight. You can tell he's a step up from the others. Craig Scott 127 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:48:31 Mike G. Im assuming many read TW comments on our phones. If you want to share informative content from a news article simply post a link rather than the whole transcript on here. Brian Harrison 128 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:52:39 Glad the window has closed although the window for Saudi Arabia still has a week or 2 left. I think we have had a very good window adding some real quality which is already making an impact and young Dibling hasn't started a game yet. When we heard that Branthwaite had done his hamstring, many feared the worst for our early games without him. Then Mykolenko gets injured in the first 10 minutes of the Roma game and has had to miss a couple of games. Bearing that in mind I think to beat Brighton and Wolves was a sign of just how good our squad is, as well as beating Mansfield which could have been a banana skin. Definitely a positive start and long may it continue. Mike Gaynes 129 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:55:31 Billy #123, yes, and some of our closest rivals in the table had a very rough window. Brentford lost 49 of the 66 goals they scored last season. They have 11 goals' worth of signings to replace them. I'm sad to say I think they're headed down.Wolves failed completely to replace Cunha and Ait-Nouri. Same comment as Brentford, but without the sadness.Fulham improved not at all. Palace saved its season by keeping Guehi at the last possible moment, but losing Eze is a crippler.I think we may well watch all these teams fall past us this season. Christy Ring 130 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:57:58 Aznou getting game time for u21's, and Heath scored for Accrington after 3min's. Mike Gaynes 131 Posted 02/09/2025 at 19:59:35 Craig #127, sorry for the inconvenience but The Athletic is behind a paywall, and most folks here wouldn't be able to read the article if I merely post a link.I do usually edit down their articles because they often post information for their US audience that TW readers already know. In this case I thought the whole thing was worth posting. Jerome Shields 132 Posted 02/09/2025 at 20:19:50 Thought it was a good window and went to the same framework as last season's Summer transfer window, though clearing the strategic plan was to lower the average age of the squad.I thought Moyes did want in some seasoned Professionals, but none would bite and TFG were not prepared to pay extra as a incentive. Grealish really sees Everton as opportunity to get first team football and has hit the ground running. That was a good deal.Expected the final days to be loans rather than transfers and so it proved, though I did expect backs to be brought in on loan to add depth.Dave #121I always thought as Iowbi as the Wandering Angus with no particular position. He Once said that he felt Ancelotti did not play him in his right position. When Ancelotti was confronted with this he said if he someone could tell him what Iowbi's best position was he would play him in it.I always remember when Iowbi lost the ball him prancing about, not looking very convincing, trying to recover the ball.By there were some good times.Seamus always seemed to encourage him and would at the end of games let him know how well he would have played, which he seemed to appreciate.Paul#126Interesting information on Aznu.Thanks. Nigel Scowen 133 Posted 02/09/2025 at 20:24:07 Christy@130Dont know what you think Christy but Aznou seems disinterested in this game tonight, would like to see him getting involved a bit more. Dave Abrahams 135 Posted 02/09/2025 at 20:57:41 Nigel (133) Nigel did the game finish 1-0 to Doncaster, Imthink Everton had some players missing due to U21 International call ups like Graham and Patterson for Northern Ireland and possibly more for Wales and Scotland. Nigel Scowen 136 Posted 02/09/2025 at 21:04:33 Dave@1352-1 to Doncaster Dave, a nice goal from Justin Clarke the highlight of the game for us. I was wondering where Graham was. I must say Dave I only watched it to see how Aznou got on but I was largely unimpressed to be honest. James Flynn 137 Posted 02/09/2025 at 21:08:38 Aznou did get 81 minutes in.We tie it up in extra time and give it right back 2 minutes later.Roman Dixon was not in the squad. Not listed anyway.Neither was Reece Welch. Is he still on the team? Mike Gaynes 138 Posted 02/09/2025 at 21:18:25 James #137, apparently so -- Reading put in a bid for him in the window -- but I can find no updated information.Poor kid had his loan to Belgium abruptly terminated last season... because the borrowing club went bust! James Flynn 139 Posted 02/09/2025 at 21:27:42 Yeah, Mike. Thanks. The Bobble has one from July that Onyango and Dixon were given permission to train with Stockport County then.I checked the U-21 game stats again, and Dixon was not in the squad. Might be why we haven't seen or heard about him lately. Here's the Bobble text.Link Dave Abrahams 140 Posted 02/09/2025 at 21:28:10 Nigel (136) and James (137) Thanks for the reports, Ive never got a lot of satisfaction from watching the Academy games, there hasnt been much quality coming through but I think it is starting to improve now—if they concentrated on getting better quality coaches to train the young lads there would be a real improvement Im sure. Gavin Johnson 141 Posted 02/09/2025 at 21:36:57 Derek #118, I was just about to comment on Zouma and saw your post. He seems like a logical free signing if we were prepared to sign Victor Linderof.I wonder what's happened to Zouma for no one to go in for him? Did his form fall of a cliff at West Ham? Moyes signed him for the Hammers. You would have thought he would have been under consideration unless Moyes knows something we don't.Btw, I'm a cat owner and think he was twat for what he did. Christy Ring 142 Posted 02/09/2025 at 22:16:54 Nigel#133 Thanks for the update, didnt see the game. Im just wondering is Dixon injured hasnt played any games this season even with the U21s. Si Cooper 143 Posted 02/09/2025 at 22:23:46 Great to see posts from George. My life would certainly be appreciably diminished without periodic infusions of his particular brand of inspiration via TW (I dont do the standard social media) so the impact he must have through his work at / with Yellow House must be immense. Hopefully lots of us are able to provide some amount of monetary support to his endeavours which Im sure will give George a deserved boost for his ongoing challenges. Justin Doone 144 Posted 02/09/2025 at 22:27:30 I just love the name. There's not enough Merlins in the world. He played well for Germany in the u21 tournament but that doesn't mean much for stepping up and progressing in the professional ranks.I see it as a bit of a risky move tbh and with a near £20m price tag a very costly move too. He's missed a fair bit of football over the last 3 seasons due to injuries and the Premier league is very demanding. I wish him the best of luck. Wands and pointy hats to the ready! Paul Kossoff 145 Posted 02/09/2025 at 23:42:43 Rhol over Beethoven and tell Tarkowski the news it's rock n Rohl parts one and two the Magic man has become a blue. Derek Knox 146 Posted 03/09/2025 at 05:02:48 Gavin @ 141, I too believe it's an avenue worth exploring, especially as he has been with us before. I can't recall if was just a CB or could fill in anywhere across the back line ? Liam Mogan 147 Posted 03/09/2025 at 06:48:56 Zouma was/is a CB Ian Bennett 148 Posted 03/09/2025 at 06:55:12 Ive always liked zouma. But I would want to know if hes the player I remember.31 in October is still young enough. But why did he play only 19 games in Saudi, why did he not stay there, are his wages demands fit his current profile? or are e signing someone for huge wages who has gone down hill quickly. Are the club looking for a longer term partner to replace Tarkowski. What is the accepted position on Branthwaite. Is he a year, 3 or 5? Colin Glassar 149 Posted 03/09/2025 at 06:58:45 Röhl has a good mop of hair. Does that make him a Röhlmop? Justin #141, EVERY transfer is a risk. Paul Griffiths 150 Posted 03/09/2025 at 07:07:02 George, words can't express how I felt seeing and hearing you so strong. Nice window/nice view. How do we give from 'merica mate? I didn't see any details on the youtube post.If you can, could you give account details for YH for me/us to send you something?Ah, Nick Drake, thanks, he's on right now as I slip from one age to another at midnight.UP THE TOFFEES Sam Hoare 151 Posted 03/09/2025 at 07:15:37 I loved Zouma for Everton but he wasn't great for his last two seasons at West Ham so could understand why Moyes may not be a fan. And then there's the feline felony to consider too.I do think we look a tad short at the back though. Given O'Brien is first choice RB it only leaves us with 3 senior CB's to choose from and Branthwaite is looking increasingly susceptible to injuries with Tarkowski also getting older. I'm still a bit surprised we did nothing to address this in the window especially with RB cover in Patterson and Coleman also being injury prone. Sunderland managed to get Mukiele and Geertruida on good deals; both would have added something to our squad. Chris James 152 Posted 03/09/2025 at 07:52:31 Zouma not the only name out there, still a few free agents with top flight experience including full-backs Tomiyasu and Reguilon...https://www.planetfootball.com/lists-and-rankings/free-agents-champions-league-experience-still-available Ian Bennett 153 Posted 03/09/2025 at 08:03:29 Or use the next 17 games to identify the next john stones or jarred Branthwaite. Someone that can come in as a 4th choice, but progress to 2nd or 3rd choice over the next 18 months.Given the ages, a 18 year old would fit better, than 30+ plus when we've got Tarkowski, Keane, and suggesting Zouma. The transfer outlay could be similar to zoumas wages, for a diamond that could be worth millions more. Don Wright 154 Posted 03/09/2025 at 08:16:17 Off topic but on the BBC website under the Liverpool news section is. Peruvian tall ship sails into Liverpool Pier Head. And a picture set against the back drop of our new home check it out stunning. Mike Gaynes 155 Posted 03/09/2025 at 08:23:07 Chris, Tomiyasu is out long-term with a knee injury and Reguilon wants Champions League. Sam/Gavin/Ian, the last report I saw on Zouma had him considering an offer from Romania. Seems like he has moved well into the retread zone. If we can't do better than that.... Derek Knox 156 Posted 03/09/2025 at 09:34:42 Mike G, " Seems like he has moved well into the retread zone. "He is obviously tired (tyred) out :-) Kim Vivian 157 Posted 03/09/2025 at 09:49:15 Don, 154 - Brilliant photo, that. However I remain at a loss to understand why "EVERTON" is not emblazoned somewhere on the structure, perhaps under the HD on the sloping South facade. Martin Berry 158 Posted 03/09/2025 at 09:57:46 Kim#157My thoughts exactly, I have been asking for months why our name is not emblazoned somewhere on HDS, despite the sponsorship deal.Perhaps ? with fan pressure something can be done ? Les Callan 159 Posted 03/09/2025 at 10:07:22 Great picture Don….and I agree about our name being displayed. Ian Jones 160 Posted 03/09/2025 at 10:36:28 Don, yep, great pic. Chris James 161 Posted 03/09/2025 at 10:52:36 Fair play Mike, wasn't advocating strongly for any option, just pointing out there are some players of proven quality on the free agent list.I'm generally stoked about the transfer window and the new look attack, but right back does feel a concern with Patterson clearly not trusted and Coleman unlikely to be able to play too many games we've got O'Brien who is decent but let's face it really should be a centre-back and then out of position options. That said IMWT!! Loving having the Ginger one back! Colin Glassar 162 Posted 03/09/2025 at 11:35:05 Great pic, awful name, Don. Itll always be BMD for me. I wonder if dicky hill insisted on not sharing both names on the exterior? Kim Vivian 163 Posted 03/09/2025 at 12:05:37 Colin, I hope that's not the case. If HD did insist on that they should have been given a slap and told to do one. I'm sure there were other suitors in the frame to get their name on there. Raymond Fox 166 Posted 03/09/2025 at 12:28:30 Rohl is 6'4" and 12 stone, he says he can play in several positions but prefers midfield, as you have all probably seen on the club site.It depend how good and athletic he is, he's on the slim side but he's tall enough to play centre back if we need him to.I doubt he will get much/any first team playing time for a while though, he will take time to settle in. Mick O'Malley 167 Posted 03/09/2025 at 13:56:26 Sam at various, agree about Onana and Iwobi, I was a big fan of Onana, he just seems to be injured to often to get up to speed, I'm sure Monchi and Emery know what there doing signing him for £50 million, Villa fans love him from what I've seen, but we know here at Everton a few average games and we get the "He's fucking shite him"brigade out, Dyche never picked him cos he wouldn't know a footballer if one kicked him in the bollocks, we've already got fans who think Barry is crap after 2 games, let's see how long it is before Rohl gets the same treatment, god forbid he might need time to settle in, he'll get my full support Sam Hoare 168 Posted 03/09/2025 at 15:00:37 Yes Mick, Dyche knows his way around good attitude and its possible (though I've seen little evidence of it) that Onana fell down in some regard there; but I'll trust Emery and Monchi's assessment of talent over Dyche any day. If Onana stays fit he'll be a CL player one day I expect.I suspect people may give Rohl a bit more time. Phil Wood 169 Posted 03/09/2025 at 15:01:35 Was not too bothered when Onana left apart from the fact we had a thin squad. He came with an I am bigger than this club attitude and never did the business. He is not as good as he thinks he is.So long Mate. David West 170 Posted 03/09/2025 at 16:46:25 Onana & iwobi hhmmm !! Alex iwobi obviously a very gifted footballer, was he, is he someone to be relied upon ? Over a season how many excellent performances did we get from him ? We had such a poor team at that time he was our best passer, creative player & dribbler, but we were shite, because too often he was poor. Same with Onana, undoubtedly gifted with physical & technical attributes but just inconsistent, too little, too often. You can say these players now look better, or are better in other teams, well that's fine. I think both were decent deals for us as the sellers. If we were not under psr pressure, I'm sure Onana would have stayed, maybe become a top PL player which I'm still not sure hes at that level. Iwobi I'm not sure will ever really be the player he could have been, with the talent he had.
