Middlesbrough U18s 0 - 0 Everton U18s

Both Luis Gardner and Malik Olayiwola were shown red cards in the final quarter of this goalless U18 Premier League draw at Rockliffe Park on Saturday.

Garner was shown a straight red card after he committed a foul in the Everton area that saw a penalty awarded to the home side. Douglass Lukjanciks saved the penalty brilliantly, diving to stop it going in the top left corner of the goal.

Minutes later, Olayiwola was also shown a straight red for the foul he committed, classed as violent conduct by the referee Samuel Ross, Everton playing out the final 10 minutes with only 9 men.

Everton U18s: Lukjanciks, Matos [Y:48'], Poland [Y:12'], Gokah, Gardner [R:76'], Akarakiri, Wren (83' Doughty), Olayiwola [R:80'], Loney (83 'Stewart), Robert [Y:16'] (83' Evans), Moses

Subs not Used: Patrick, Billington.

Not too clear exactly what happened to justify the two red cards.

Above is all gleaned from the seemingly auto-generated 'Min by Min' commentary that is featured by the Premier League and the 'Boro website (which looks suspiciously like Everton's in layout and content).

No narrative reports that I can find anywhere... But the U18s are not doing all that well so far this season: W1 D1 L3.

And still no clearer when the Official Everton website finally get around to commenting on this game, nearly a week after it was played:

Southern Praises Under-18s' Character & Resilience

“We felt the second sending off was very harsh, no complaints on the first one, but these scenarios will throw themselves at players in football.”

Right then. That explains everything.
