Stubbs talks up his England Under-20s

With four young Everton players heading to Turkey this month to represent England in the Under-20 World Cup, Alan Stubbs is rightly proud of the potential this signals in the Academy for the incoming new Everton manager.

Academy graduates Ross Barkley, John Lundstram and Chris Long, plus January transfer from Leeds, John Stones, have all been selected by Peter Taylor for the final England squad. This is the highest representation from any club.

“It's a major feather in the cap for Everton that we have got that many players in the England squad.

“I'd like to have more players in the England Under-19s and Under-21s groups, but that is just me setting high standards.

“It's really encouraging from a coach's point of view and there is nothing better than when you are working with good quality players who are developing.”

“My aim is to put more players through [to the first-team],” he added. “I harp on about that all the time because I want more and more players to progress every year.

“There shouldn't be a case when we have a dry year. I know that is setting high standards but that is what we have to do. We have got to try and produce players every season.”

It's good to see Everton allowing these players to play in the tournament. England something akin to a whole squad before the last tournament with clubs pulling people out, including our own Jack Rodwell.

An experience like this will be good for their development, even a player with 1st team experiece like Barkley.

Alan Stubbs for new manager soley based on this article!!! That is exactly the attitude I want to hear, and Stubbs knows this club very well.

4-4-2 looks to be his style of football which I like, but he will probably never be appointed. We can do worse than Stubbs, for example Mark Hughes, Tony Pulis or Gary Megson.

Good to have 4 players in the U20s but as Stubbs himself says, shame there's no-one at all in the U21s and U19s.

Useful experience for the lads though of the 4 I would only expect Barkley to be featuring in the first team significantly next season.

That is good news for the health of the club. I wonder if Stubbs is using this to make his case for the Everton managers job (or what was I understand he knows he was not successful), that he will bring the youth through.

Stubbs has got to play a part in the new managers setup.

It is a good sign that Everton have four players in this tournament but, during the last 10 years, I have noticed that the number of youth players getting into the Everton first team has declined. The claim that Everton are among the best in youth development is far from the truth, but I agree that Everton have the training facilities that are needed to make players such as George Green the next young hot thing at Everton.

In all the years Moyes was at Everton, he did not focus hard enough in finding and bringing the best young talent to Everton. If the talent was not coming through from the junior teams, it seems the best way would be to look in the lower leagues in the UK. Moyes is going to have to take much of the blame for that. The squad is getting older and we have known this would happen for a couple of years now. Why did Moyes not find us the young talent we need?

He had the chance to pick one or two of his best youngsters and nurture them in the first team squad. Lars Stubhaug, former academy goalkeeper, told to a Norwegian newspaper that Moyes never had anything to do with the youngsters directly. He only focused on the first team squad and the eleven that were supposed to start the next game.

I have come to understand that Moyes is not really a manager who can and likes to develop young players. But the number 1 criteria should be youth development, since that is where Everton have everything in place to take them further.

So, now that Moyes is gone, who is the better option in this area? Who can come in and really make a difference among the managers on the list that Kenwright has?

We need a manager who involves himself with the youth players, it can only get better from now on if Kenwright hires the right manager. Looking at Martinez I have to say he does look a better judge of youth talent then Moyes, but he also has the balls to stick with them and play them in the first team.

Jimmy, how many youth players did Martinez bring through from the Wigan academy? Can only think of Mcmanaman myself. At the end of the day the manager can only help through the youngsters who have the sufficient talent and not many do.

I think Martinez was forced into promoting youth due to resources. Who knows what he would have done in Moyes's position?

Wigans youth setup is nothing like Evertons. That is one of the major factors in why Martinez was so annoyed. Because Whelan promised him that he would develop that area, which he didn't. .... oh and the fact that they got relegated.

Iam pretty sure Stones came from Barnsley and not Leeds.

That's right, Roger. It's Luke Garbutt that came from Leeds.

Youngsters developed by Everton in recent years: Rooney, Rodwell, Barkley, Duffy, Coleman (although not an academy player), Anichebe, Vaughan, Akpan and Baxter. Two of these left on big bucks deals. Not a terrible crop, but I'm sure we could do better.

I agree with David Sheen that Martinez would have a far superior youth setup at Everton and the calibre of player would be better. Even if it was only one or two per season who made the step up to the first team we would be in a much stronger position. Remember a few years back when the first team was decimated by injuries and we played the half the youth team against BATE Borisov. They played really well, but only Coleman and Rodewell have gone on to be regulars (well Rodwell when fit!). Nothing better than seeing a home grown player turn into a top professional.

JImmy Sørheim (752) Colin Glassar (881), you've no clue about youth development so you're both making wild statements about Moyes bringing players through. Very very few make it at the the top of the game and it also takes time to develop a young player. We've had a fair few make it into the fringes of the 1st team but that doesnt make them a cert to go onto to becoming a regular.

There are very few teams who can just keep churning out young players into the 1st team. I know people say Arsenal but that is not strictly true as they are renowned for raiding other teams academies.
