Jagielka will be a phenomenal captain

Seal of approval from the new manager

Roberto Martinez believes Phil Jagielka will emerge as a 'phenomenal' captain for the club. The Spaniard says Jagielka has the leadership qualities to succeed as Everton skipper and will also command the respect of his team-mates with his performances on the pitch.

"I've been a big admirer of Phil Jagielka and I do feel that now he is probably at the peak of his career in terms of the leadership he has achieved when representing England and the roles that he has had for the national team and for a few seasons now at Everton," Martinez told evertontv.

"It's the right moment for him to take that role and, for me, it is representative of the standards of our football club on a daily basis."

"I know that he is going to embrace that role and be a perfect fit for a role that is traditionally a great honour at the football club.

"Phil Jagielka is going to be a phenomenal captain."

I think the players are going to enjoy playing for this manager.
He has spoke really well about a few of them now.
Martinez brings a positive feeling to the club.

Hopefully Eugene will treat us to a view of how Moyes would and did pay tribute to his players...

Love his attitude; it's great to see a manager big up his own players for a change.

And you're spot-on, Paul — the players will love playing for Roberto.

Moyes doesn't do tributes. I can't wait to watch RVP's goal ration plummet next season...

I wish RM would find another adjective to describe whatever it is he is talking about, he has already used this term far to often.

Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: astounding, exceptional

Synonyms: extraordnary, fantastic, marvelous, miraculous, outstanding, preternatural, prodigious, rare, remarkable, sensational, singular, substantial, uncommon, unique, unparalleled, unusual, unwonted, wondrous

phenomenal  [fi-nom-uh-nl]

Every time I hear or see the word I keep singing that old Muppet's classic - Mahna Mahna

[fi-nom-uh-nl]
Do do-do do
[fi-nom-uh-nl]
Do doo de-do-do de-do-do de-do-do de-do-do-doodle do do do-doo do!

Come on, Roberto, please find an alternative word.

I was just starting to notice that too, Patrick & James...

Still it's least it's a good very upbeat word — unlike Walter's painfully repetitive "disappointment".

[Watching him (Roberto) now on ESPN.... he's a phenomenal pundit!]

Michael #881, not as painfully repetitive as the series of 0-0 draws we opened up one of Walter's seasons with. I'm too scared to look at the archives, but we did have a... disappointing amount in the first half of one season!

Most of us don't need telling about Jagielka's capabilities. The guy rarely has a bad game. However, we need to establish who will be his cover if he get's injured and I hope Martinez is working on that.

Most of us were wanting a new manager; we have to expect that miracles won't happen overnight – even if Everton get off to a great start next season.

The strengths and weaknesses have to be appraised by the new manager and hopefully he will see things that Moyes couldn't. With a back four as good as any, I would say he has something to build on.

Patrick:

The Spaniards use superlatives much more liberally than Englishmen, and this to the point that a devaluation of these superlatives comes about. In the Spanish-speaking world, the word "fenomenal" is thrown around in ways that might seem somewhat awkward to Englishman. It would not sound strange to the natives if a Spaniard referred to his Tequila or Paella as "fenomenal." It's just their way of saying "very good."

It should also be pointed out that from a strictly etymological point of view, the word "phenomenal" is no superlative. Also in philosophy there is the well known distinction of the noumenal and the phenomenal. The former signifies the supernatural, whereas the latter signifies the natural or the mundane.

Bobby is a very intelligent man who chooses his words wisely. I would be genuinely worried if he referred to Pip as "divine" or "wondrous."

I lived in Spain for many years the Spanish use 'phenominal' like we use 'great' or 'brilliant'.

What a breath (desperately needed) of fresh air RM is!

When's the last time an EFC manager spoke so openly, passionately & optimistically? He addresses us fans & staff with the utmost respect. DM had a little of this approach in the early years but, in recent years, it's been silence, arrogance & evasiveness.

I can't remember feeling so good pre-season. I'll back RM no matter what this first season but hopefully with a good squad, additions & the new manager "feel good factor", he'll prove his critics wrong. COYB!

I suppose RM will be trying to sign new players for nominal fees. That's what BK thinks anyway.

Jags is a fantastic player and will be a great captain. RM is defo saying all the right things for me, just need a few cracking signings now! On another note, that Neymar goal against Japan was a great goal but I have seen a lot of better goals in the last year, it's because it's Brazil.....paul scholes scored them every other week!

I'm so excited for the new season.

Who do you want in the first five games?

This is what I'm hoping for:

Hull (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Cardiff (H)
Norwich (A)
Stoke (H)

Hopefully Mark Sky don't stick their noses in and demand an Anfield derby first! If they do, I might just throw myself in the Mersey, or even better, take a trip in the Duckmarine!

I tend to like to stay away from newly promoted sides early on, they seem to always perform better early doors, then go into decline later. Just my opinion though

Phenomenal Jo scores for Brazil! I thought he'd retired, could be the amazing star of the Brazil World Cup, players with the initial J usually do well for them in WC's

Interesting thread........ only in England.

I wonder have if any of TW's in-house language critics themselves mastered a second language as well as RM has mastered English? With so much advice being dished out, it would be tragic if the answer is "no"

Scouse does not count... although some would argue it should. ;-)

The positive language is so welcome. It makes you realise that for a long time now we have not been subjected to morose and down trodden views about our club.

You just know the Sky influenced 'random' fixtures will have us against Man Utd first game. There will also be a Super Sunday where it's Arsenal V Spurs and Man Utd V Man City. Then the relegation 6 pointer: Hull v the Shite.

What about that goal by Pirlo?

The Brazilians don't have all the dead ball specialists. We have Bainsey who is equally as important as Jags.

I wonder if Roberto will be so positive when he see's the new kit?
