Keen to implement a new style of play under Martinez
Leighton Baines is looking forward to working with new manager Roberto Martinez and believes the quality of the Toffees' squad will give the Spaniard every chance of success. He is eager to start work on a new philosophy under Martinez and believes he and his team-mates can make it effective at Goodison Park. "He was one of the first names linked with the job and the feeling straight away was he would be a great appointment," he said. "He has a different style to what we have been used to but I think it is progressive and it will move us forward. It is also exciting for the players to be able to try that now. "The style in general appeals to a lot of people. Wigan were a great side to watch - they just didn't win enough games. But the manager will be working with some better players here and he will be looking forward to that as well now, being able to put his plan out there. "We have got good players at the club who could probably execute the style of play better than the players he's worked with before, without being disrespectful to them. He might have a little bit more confidence in the players - I am sure he had confidence in the players he had then but here are some really top players he can look forward to working with. "We have time to work on it, whether it is a different style of play or whether the formation changes. By the time we kick the first ball of the season we will be well-versed on what he wants to do."

Those comments imply that Baines is staying. Excellent news, if it is true.

I never doubted the fella would stay for a minute. Always seems to have his head screwed on to his shoulders, and his feet screwed onto the earth. Top bloke who knows he's happy where he is.

Let's be honest - money isn't everybody's motivator - and those who are motivated by money, in my experience, aren't worth knowing, or working with. (Notwithstanding the fact that he's on the kind of money most people only dream of!) - but he doesn't strike me as a mercenary.

Undoubtedly our best player by a mile and will be a strong message to say if the best left back in Europe wants to stay then what a boost that will be.

The comments from Leighton re the progressive style of football are very encouraging."It will move us forward"
Looking forward to this season more than any other for the last 7-8 years.
We should witness some exciting attacking play this season.Play without fear as Roberto says.

Can only be good news if he stays.

Interesting choice of words 'progressive style of football'. Sounds like an element of frustration with the previous regime.

"He has a different style to what we have been used to but I think it is progressive and it will move us forward." He has burnt his bridges with Moyes right there! Baines ain't going nowhere..:-)

Give Bainsey a long term contract so he sees out his career with us. He's too good to lose and will get even better as he gets older.

Well, I'm not jumping for joy yet. I still think Moyes will make a bid for Baines any time soon.

Sounds very encouraging from Leighton, there would be a lot more pressure if he moved to utd.
Give him a improved longer contract and hope he signs.

Good news for a change. After that sought of talk I will be surprised if he goes. That would give us the best pair of fullbacks in the league, especially going forward. I'm resigned to the big fella going but although I would miss him, the amount of money from the transfer means we could probably bring in another three or four quality players so it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Bloody Moyes! Couldn't he take Felliani instead.
