Everton made their customary meek exit from the League Cup with a comprehensive defeat to Swansea City, their first in history to the Welsh side. Roberto Martinez made seven changes to the team that lost to Crystal Palace but, while his team started fairly brightly, they fell behind to Nathan Dyer's first-half strike. Romelu Lukaku replaced Samuel Eto'o at half-time and fired narrowly over but Swansea doubled their lead midway through the second half when Sigurdsson turned home after Distin had headed off his own crossbar. Marvin Emnes completed the Blues' misery with a late third.

Everton beaten by another Palace smash-and-grab raid

Everton went from elation to despondency in the space of four days as they followed their handsome win over Wolfsburg with a dismal, error-strewn home defeat to Crystal Palace. Romelu Lukaku's goal looked to have set them on their way to an important victory but Palace turned the match on its head with an equaliser from the spot after half an hour and then goals by Frazier Campbell and Yannick Bolasie that made it 3-1. Leighton Baines pulled a goal back with a penalty with seven minutes left but the Blues couldn't salvage a point.

Everton hope to make it three wins on the bounce as Crystal Palace come to Goodison Park. Having named an unchanged line-up for the excellent win over Wolfsburg on Thursday, Roberto Martinez could start to rotate in some of his players champing at the bit for their first starts, like Samuel Eto'o, Christian Atsu and Muhamed Besic. Seamus Coleman, meanwhile, is expected to be fit despite suffering a blow to the head at the end of Thursday's game. KO is 4pm.

U18s thrash Blackburn

Everton Under-18s thrashed Blackburn Rovers 4-0 away on Saturday. Everton were three goals up at half-time through Connolly, Walsh and Charsley, who bagged another in the second half.

Everton mark Euro return with blitz of Wolfsburg

Everton are off to a flying start in the Europa League thanks to a 4-1 win over Wolfsburg at Goodison Park. Steven Naismith forced home the opening goal when the ball rebounded in off Ricardo Rodriguez before Seamus Coleman stooped to head home Leighton Baines' cross to make it 2-0 at half time. A Baines penalty after Aiden McGeady was tripped made it 3-0 just after the interval and Kevin Mirallas raced away to slot home a fourth. A stoppage-time free-kick from Rodriguez spoiled the clean sheet but the Blues bagged the points.

Christian Atsu popped up with a late winner to give Ghana a 3-2 win over Togo in Lome to preserve the Black Stars' unbeaten start to Group E of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying. Emmanuel Adebayor looked to have grabbed a point for the home nation but Atsu raced clear to score the decider with four minutes left on the clock.

Aiden McGeady fired a late goal for the Republic of Ireland that gave Martin O'Neill's side a winning start to their Euro2016 qualifying in Tbilisi. Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy also started and it was the latter who provided the assist for McGeady to give the Irish the lead in the first half. David Henen did not sign for Everton before the transfer deadline after all – at least not on a permanent basis – but joined Olympiakos instead. He will remain with the Blues, though, after they signed him on a season-long loan from the Greek club.

Impasse with United foils late Cleverley bid

Everton's attempts to draft Tom Cleverley into the squad today were scuppered by Manchester United's refusal to lower their price for the midfielder, according to reports. It been suggested throughout the day that the Blues had tried to sign Cleverley on loan but this does not appear to have been the case. Though there was early speculation suggesting Roberto Martinez might try and sign central defensive cover in the wake of Shane Duffy's transfer to Blackburn, nothing came of the rumours and the club have told reporters that they are done for transfer deadline day.
