Everton embarrassed again as Sunderland clinch safety

Sunderland 3 - 0 Everton

Joel Robles had a night to forget as his goal was breached another three times.

Everton offered up another shameful away performance, going down meekly to Sunderland who easily picked up the three points they needed to safeguard their membership of the Premier League and send Newcastle and Norwich down to the Championship.

The Blues fell behind 2-0 by the half-time interval to goals by Patrick van Aanholt and Lamine Kone and then conceded another when Joel Robles could only parry to the feet of the Ivorian defender and he converted from close range.

Coming in the wake of Saturday's abject capitulation at the King Power Stadium to newly-crowned Champions, Leicester and the even more embarrassing surrender at Anfield in the Merseyside derby last month, the outcome of this game came as little surprise to those Evertonians, far fewer in number than the usual committed throng, who made the journey to the northeast this evening.

Seven goals conceded in those two prior away fixtures became 10 as the Black Cats capitalized on Everton's inability to convert superior possession into chances and their notorious weakness at set pieces.

All three goals came as the result of dead-ball situations. The first and third were incidents that Robles will want to forget but none of the defenders covered themselves in glory and were it not for a couple of other important stops by the Spanish goalkeeper, the score might have been higher.

Gareth Barry returned to the starting XI after injury and Ramiro Funes Mori was back from suspension so Matthew Pennington moved to right back. Further forward, Kevin Mirallas came in for Oumar Niasse.

Everton looked the more composed sides in the early going, enjoying plenty of possession but without creating much until a deep cross in the ninth minute was met by Pennington but his looping header dropped wide.

Sunderland began to assert themselves more as the match passed the quarter-hour mar, seeking to capitalise on a period when Leighton Baines was off the pitch tending to strapping on his calf. A tame header by Younis Kaboul was all the Black Cats could muster from a decent spell, however, and Joel Robles comfortably gathered.

It was Kaboul who was the unlikely source of the closest moment of the half thus far when he turned inside Pennington from the home side's left flank and whipped a shot across goal and narrowly past the far post.

At the other end, Tom Cleverley almost had Mirallas away on goal but Vito Mannone was out of his area to clear quickly before Barkley tried a speculative curler from outside the box but slipped and his shot went well wide.

A fairly lifeless encounter came alive seven minutes before half-time, though, when Funes Mori's foul on the edge of the box gave Van Aanholt an opportunity to line up a direct free kick that he drove through the defensive wall and in past Robles who had badly misjudged the Dutchman's intentions and vacated the centre of the goal.

Robles recovered well a couple of minutes when he turned Jermaine Defoe's good header behind but when Everton failed to clear the resulting corner, Kone smashed home from close range as the ball was nodded back into the danger zone to double the lead.

Martinez replaced Barkley with Lennon at the start of the second half and an early free kick ended with Pennington, again the only player in Blue apart perhaps from the willing Mirallas to emerge with much credit, heading towards the top corner but Mannone made a two-handed catch.

At the other end, Jan Kirchoff glanced a header wide from a corner as Sunderland continued to press.

Sunderland increased their lead 10 minutes into the second half, however. Defoe was put clean through by a through-ball as the visitors' defence opened up again but while he lifted the ball over Robles, Pennington raced back with Stones to clear the ball off the line for a corner.

Khazri swung a wicked in-swinging dead-ball delivery in that Robles parried awkwardly off the goal line but the ball dropped to Kone off a defender's leg and he slammed it into the net.

Everton were carved open once more almost immediately but Khazri couldn't pick Defoe out in the centre for what would surely have been a fourth. Shortly afterwards, Deandre Yedlin slid an unchallenged ball across the Everton box but couldn't find a red and white jersey.

After Robles had made a good save to deny Defoe, Mannone was called into real action for the first time when he parried a Funes Mori header to safety midway through the second half.

Barry then forced another stop from the 'keeper with a decent header off a corner but it was steered too close to Mannone to really trouble him.

The final stages were a bit of a non-event as the Black Cats wound down the game. Mirallas clipped the woodwork with one shot and Lukaku sliced another shot onto the crossbar from a similar situation as Kone's second goal but the ball wouldn't go in for Martinez's sorry outfit.

Another miserable evening for Everton, then, and perhaps the last match that Martinez oversees because it's hard to see how his tenure can possible last until Sunday's final game against Norwich. Fed-up Everton fans are sure to make their feelings about the manager known at what is supposed to be an upbeat occasion to see out the season.

Aside from Pennington, no youth, even on the bench? Neither Ossie nor Gibson could have been left out for Dowell? Is Martinez trying to get sacked?

What is the point of having Niasse and Osman on the bench. I despair.

Tim ... this is a manager fighting to save his job. If he was sure of his position we might have seen more youngsters given their head in these closing fixtures.

That hasn't been the case. The only reason any young player got near the team in recent weeks is because it was forced on him by injuries.

He'll turn to seasoned pros before risking youngsters in the precarious position he has created for himself.

Madness - doing the same thing and expecting different results.
Look at this team sheet. Madness.
I like the Mackems, but they won't get it any easier than tonight.

So we think Matthew Pennington at right back inside of in the centre?

I echo the call for youth on the bench, although we owe it to the league to put out a strong 11 today.

Lennon won't be defending the right flank. Good luck to Pennington and McCarthy? They're going to need it.
Kevin will have been given orders to play at left back. Let's see what Ross actually does.

Jim,

I look forward to watching Pennington play right back. Watching him, I see him as a full back in the short term, developing into a centre half as he gains more experience and more strength. He won't play Stones right back and keep a kid in central defence surely.

Keith Glazzard

RM is fighting for his job tonight. So is Sam Allardyce. I know wh I'd put my money on.

Keith,

I agree re the cover Lennon gives the full back, he works like a trojan. I think he has been a shining light for us this season. Saying that, his crossing in the last few games hasn't been to his usual high standard.

Lukaku is going through the motions. For him to have any chance we need to get the right cross in.

Roberto's reply when asked by sky reporter "how confident are you that you'll get something better from your team tonight?" Referring to Saturday of course. Roberto's reply: "will we, always react well".
I despair, please sack this man asap.

Just give us some fight. Don't sit in your own half passing across the pitch. Get the ball forward quick and get up and support the attack. Doesn't matter who plays its a must win. Get some respect back from the fans.

Utterly depressing. At least Newcastle are going down.

30 Posted 11/05/2016 at 20:39:13
Ross Barkley is nowhere near good enough. I watched him all of the time in that half. Trots around a lot neither marking or being in a position to attack. At least the Mike Walker team had Ablett, Watson and Horne etc. Some fight and drive. We need to stop pretending that these players are good enough. They are awful!
Sean Lloyd
31 Posted 11/05/2016 at 20:40:29
What an absolute bunch of fairies.. Utterly embarrassing with no one willing to put a foot in anywhere.

The more I see Ross Barkley trotting around the pitch at a snails pace and doing his best Yaya Toure impression from last week against Real Madrid, the more I want to throw my TV out the window.

Absolutely no drive, penetration, forward movement whatsoever. This is utter dross football of the highest order, we're not even beating them in possession stakes with the absolute garbage we're serving up.

God knows what Robles was playing at.
Major overhaul needed - Get out Martinez.

Everton are pathetic at the minute. The players don't care and Martinez's record is terrible this season (even his away record that he makes out is so good!) He should be sacked for not doing defensive training and for never playing a balanced midfield and instead playing Cleverley outwide every game. Someone should remind him of our motto Nil Satis Nisi Optimum.
Jim Marray
34 Posted 11/05/2016 at 20:41:28
I have seen Robbie's full time comments the reporters. He has emphasised that they should look at what he has achieved over the last three seasons; these achievements are delivering a team that can play football at a speed that allows the Chairman to join during training; he has introduced good players and made them suitable to play in the league he will get us promoted to next season (the Championship); he has boosted the value of the team by inflating the transfer prices of players who are only just managing to get a gentle jog during the game and of course the players are capable of lasting all season as by not running around during the game when they don't have the ball they are conserving energy.
Why would he media think his job was under threat?
Andy Walker
35 Posted 11/05/2016 at 20:41:29
Tommy, the hordes of posters (most now gone) who postered how great Martinez was after his appointment will presumably be surprised.

Those of us who looked at his record (evidence) aren't. A young, naive, idealist who was found out at Wigan yet somehow convinced BK to employ him and hoodwinked many Everton fans at the time.

Let's hope the club and certain fans don't make the same mistake again when his replacement is announced.

Robles for the first. John Stones and McCarthy for second. McCarthy slow getting out Stones ran past his man.

Carragher: "John Stones gets stick for the mistakes on the ball. His problem is he doesn't see danger early enough."

Would have been better if it came from someone else but absolutely spot on.

Half time and some very disinterested players out there. Pennington aside, and perhaps Robles no one appears to give a sweet shit. The contrast in attitude with our opposition couldn't be more stark. Surely this is the last 45 minutes of the Martinez era.

I've been supporting my team for 53 years. I can honestly say I am indifferent if we lose tonight because I want the manager sacked.

I believe that, if we had beaten Leicester and got anything from the last few games, our board will not get rid of RM. We must lose tonight and against Norwich for the board to feel they can justifiably sack him.

It is a sad state of affairs when you want your team to lose but I am there. He needs binning. Nice man, wrong club. He's not up to the job.

I agree with the last post. The players aren't as good as they think they are or as good as Martinez has told them they are. We need fresh legs all over the park but definitely in goal, at right back and centre midfield.

As for Martinez, I really don't want to see him sacked but we are in a tailspin and his dismissal seems inevitable. The team hasn't looked fit for two years and struggle to maintain any consistency over 90 minutes.

Andy Walker
49 Posted 11/05/2016 at 20:48:09
Darren, there was an enormous amount of pro Funes Mori shite posted on here following his signing. Why I have no idea. Anyone who suggested he was an unproven, expensive risk was roundly dismissed, including a certain journalist. Some of our fans need to take a hard look in the mirror and take some responsibility for their appalling judgement over the last few years.
David Milner
50 Posted 11/05/2016 at 20:48:33
Cleverley is out of his depth, what was he doing in the line for the free kick.

McCarthy is not much better, a midfielder in the left back position playing everyone onside for the second.

Barkley is delaying playing the ball & is being caught in possession.

Why do we not man mark in the box?

Bob has'nt a clue. There is no man management. Change tactics, we hav'nt got any tactics.

Play the under 21's at home to Norwich with Unsworth in charge.

My bet (or hope) is that a statement is issued after the match saying Norwich will be Martinez's last game in charge and that we will be seeking to appoint a new manager for next season. Surely even Kenwright can see this ship is at best rudderless?
Tommy Coleman
55 Posted 11/05/2016 at 20:52:04
I was one of them Andy. I didn't mind his appointment, and after being disillusioned with football, Martinez's first season made me fall in love with football again.
But, for my opinion, a manager controlling a club with our resources should build a championship challenging side in 3 years.
Martinez has had his chance.

I'm not surprised by this score line, the players know he's gone and it shows.

All Martinez bullshit excuses now are only to fight for a better severance pay. I just don't know what's taking it so long.

John Graham
56 Posted 11/05/2016 at 20:52:33
What a load of tosh. Over run by a team fighting to stay in the league. We need a goalie definitely. We need at least one central defender. McCarthy doesn't do anything, doesn't close down, doesn't defend doesn't create, what's happened to him. Cleverly not up to in. Barclay needs to step up and at least try to dictate things if he has any ambition. Can't see anything good at all.
Jim Lloyd

I think that if he is still there on Sunday, people might remember that the smiling one. The one who called out "What a Manager" Who hasn't yet sacked him and basically has hung him out to dry.

To me, R/M lost his way and the pressure has just been to much for him. The way this "I'm the biggest Blue on the Planet" Chairman has let the poor bugger implode, is bloody shameful.

R/M has suffered, the players have suffered and we have suffered having had to watch it unfold. Mr Moshiri, if you want this club to become a top club again, you have to take over from the Ego Man

End of the season Jim. Sacking him before will cost the club more money so as we are safe why bother is what I suspect Mosh is thinking. We'd only end up having to pay off Martinez for longer and pay more to a caretaker to step up to the season end.

I am disgusted with the attitude of the players. Sunderland were on the verge of being relagated and they took the piss out of us in the first half, picking us off when play broke down. Gone back 20 years to the center halfs just launching the ball aimlessly to no one. 3rd goal just gone in which sums us up lately, 6 men doing nothing in the 6 yard box. This could get embarrassing. This is so embarrassing.
In 45 years of watching Everton this is as poor as I remember for effort .
Pennington has had our best two attempts which says it all really.
I would love to know whats happened to Barkley, the lad looks fat, bloated and cannot run . It I s as if his legs are stuck together or his boot laces are tied together.
Cleverley/Mc Carthy are non existent week in week out, only Barry performs in the midfield.
The whole thing is shambolic, each week I iask can it get any worse. well at least they don't disappoint on that one.

John 73, no need to say 'hate to say it'. Moyes is ten times the manager Martinez is. Never has the term 'careful what you wish for' been more poignant.

That's not to say I want Moyes back BTW.

The Martinez legacy: relegate Newcastle and Norwich. His appointment, his inept management, his lies, his arrogance, his cretinous platitudes and his nice guy fake persona. The worst era in our history.

He does not deserve to walk away with an iota of respect. He has been hugely paid and has stolen his money. He is devoid of integrity.

Defoe is 20 times the player Romelu is. "I want champions league football". I hope it's Amanda Holden modelling tomorrow's kit launch because these clowns shouldn't be in Everton blue next season. Not one of them! Baines might be "one of us" but he had been woeful for 2 seasons now. McCarthy doesn't win the ball. It's a myth. He gives it the nearest man. Stones. Get shut. Ross. Get shut. Cleverly, Robles, Niasse, Mirallas, Mori, lukaku, get shut. Start again with a top class manager.

Moyes wouldn't have let it get to this.

The board will let Martinez see the season out, don't know why but that's the way we do things.

I've maintained my one man protest since the Southampton game and won't be there against Norwich!

That will be 3 home games I've missed this season, 2 because I refuse to attend and 1 for a wedding!!!

I'm just wondering if a deal has been struck between Martinez and EFC. Pure speculation on my part but what about:
–RM was quietly told some weeks ago that the game was up.
–The club will let him stay on until the end of the season to save face.
–But he must compromise hugely on pay-off.
Win-win all round given the season was a shambles some time ago?
It buys the new owner time to get the right candidate.
It allows RM some barely deserved dignity.

People on here slagging off Moyes. At least his teams had professionalism and pride. At least he knew in order to be competitive the team needed to meet the physical challenge and battle of the PL and his players needed to be mentally tough.

There's been all sorts thrown at these players and manager by fans and media, rightly so, and yet there's been no reaction to the negative criticism, no pride in performance, no aggression to prove people wrong, no work ethic to try and get out of the mess the team is in.

There is a serious attitude and character problem in them players now. The next manager has one hell of a job on his hands.

Thanks Roberto. Thanks a lot!

In my view, Martinez was the worst appointment in our history. Appointed by the worst custodian of our club in our history. Kenwright should sack Martinez and it will be one less fraudster at the club. Of course, if he was to go as well , then the stench would lessen quite a bit.

I'm not so much worried about the manager who will be gone soon but by the players - none of them, including Stones, Barkley and Lukaku, seem good enough.

Where to begin? That's as bad as I've ever seen us play. I didn't watch the derby or semi - spare myself the pain - but I've no doubt they were of a similar caliber to that. And that was truly truly bad,

Many of the players out there today deserve no credit at all. It was a lethargic, lazy, listless, lousy performance the likes of which I hope to never see again. In their similar looking kits one could have mistaken Sunderland for Athletico. That's how bad we were. We made Sunderland - 17th in the league - look like Simeones La Liga title chasers.

Truly truly dreadful. Once again we await comment from the club. I feel though that the rubicon has been crossed here. Martinez position is not only totally untenable, but he's making the boards increasingly difficult as well. Fingers crossed, announcement soon.

I can't blame a man who's an employee. I blame the man who hired him. Losing whatever amount he would by resigning, isn't fair on him, no matter how bad he's become.

I take on board what you said Andy about the cost of sacking him maybe after the Liverpool Game but we might well have made most of any cost back, by getting to the final and getting a few places higher.

First of all I must start with the positives of the night, the barcodes and Rada are relegated facht.

The negatives everything else. It was an awful performance again, I know 94% of us agree Martinez should be gone but the last two matches our players attitude has been atrocious.

Yes they might not like the manager and there isn't anything for us to play for but we the fans deserve better from them. A number of these players need a massive kick up the arse or shipping out by the new manager or the current malaise will continue.

In 11 years under Moyes, just once.

Roberto Martinez will achieve 2 consecutive sub-50 seasons, whatever the result against Norwich on Sunday.

Whatever, that's in the past and many, many supporters are so bitterly disillusioned now with the club, that something drastic has to happen now. Even if we don't get to here of it for a time, something, fundamental needs to happen.

Some believe Mr Moshiri is just a patsy that Kenwright has kidded into funding his dreams of glory (for him, like) I'm not so sure. We need a thorough sweeping out of Kenwright and his cronies before any progress at all can take place at Everton Football Club.

I think Martinez will be gone tomorrow. Makes no sense to leave it after Sunday. It could have been five or six against a side fighting to stay in the league tonight.

A new start should happen from tomorrow. Let the fans attend Sunday knowing a new start is coming. A new dawn must come.

I don't want Benitez; he inherited a great side from Houllier, who was too sick to reap the rewards he sown. Then he gets sacked everywhere else. He can't be blamed for relegation but the Villa game doesn't cover his reign in glory

I can't add anything more to what we've saying for months now. Forget tennis balls and walk-outs on Sunday. I think we need to take heed of Arnold Rimmer's protest plan from 'Polymorph' - Red Dwarf III:

"
Let's get tough! The time for talking is over. Call it extreme if you like, but I propose we hit (the board) hard and hit it fast with a major -- and I mean major -- leaflet campaign, and while it's reeling from that, we'd follow up with a whist drive, a car boot sale, some street theatre and possibly even some benefit concerts. OK? Now, if that's not enough, I'm sorry, it's time for the T-shirts: "Martinez Out" ... "Inept Managers! No Thanks" ...
and if that's not enough, well, I don't know what will be."

Sorry if you don't know the TV clip - but I need something to make me smile - until the clown does depart!

Not enough space on forums like this to catalogue EFC'S failings the last two years.
I can't honestly think of one player on show tonight that would be worthy of a regular place.
Lukaku, absolute joke since the Chelsea quarter final, would be astounded if any champions league club would look at the lazy bastard twice.
Ditto Barrkley, just who the fuck does he think he is? Oh yeah I remember, a "youngster in a phenomenal moment".

So Martinez expected a reaction after Saturday... Did anyone see one? because I didn't!

Same old shit, for once I was glad to be watching on a dodgy stream on the PC and not there, but fair play to those Everton fans that went. Normally when I can't go I am kicking every ball and shouting at the computer, tonight I just couldn't be arsed.... I just sat there thinking this could end up five or six, I am glad I have been at work and never bothered swapping a shift so I could go... That's what he has done, going to the match is now a chore.

He should be sacked tonight and be made to make his own way back from the North East, even the fact that we relegated Benethus and the Geordies doesn't make it any more palatable.

Get a new manager and watch these same players, or most of them, be transformed. We see it time and time again. Judgment of individual members of the team in the present toxic climate is redundant; they're just not playing for a broken Martinez.

It's a good job Moshiri took the plunge and invested a few months back. I can't imagine things being any worse than they are right now...But they most certainly would have been had the status quo remained.

The glimmer of hope is the potential stellar signings which is the only positive I'm clinging onto. Also, It wouldn't be the likes of De Boar and Pellegrini putting themselves in the frame for the soon to be vacant job. We'd be competing with Villa, and Newcastle (once Rafa goes to Valencia) for Nigel Pearson and David Moyes. It would be like jumping into Michael J Fox's Delorean DMC and going back to 2002 after Walter Smith was sacked.

In Moshiri we trust....

Mike Green

Norwich and Newcaste didn't get relegated because of Everton tonight, they got relegated because the pair of them have been shite all season and anyone coming on here calling that fat Spaniard Rafa needs to take a long hard look at themselves. I swear if that thing comes anywhere near Goodison I'd burn the place down.

As for that shambles tonight, did anyone expect anything else? Torn to bits at times by a side who have been in the bottom 3 all season. There's not one player in that side Id keep. The lot of them are shite, every last one of them. If he is to get sacked – and knowing the cabbage patch doll its a big if – a new gaffer has got one massive job on his hands.

If Kenwright had any balls hed let him go tomorrow and save him and his family the indignity of having to face a very nasty irate bunch on Sunday. But we all know Kenwright hasn't got any balls and I doubt this Moshiri is all he's cracked up to be as well. They don't give a fuck about us. Getting sacked, my arse.

Mike, Knee jerk reactions? I think most fans who have posted on here have been very reserved.

It is fairly obvious that on here at least, the consensus is there is something fundamentally flawed in the club.

Liverpool fans walked out because of proposed increase in prices.

I think Everton fans are very much concerned that there is a lot more than the cost of tickets at issue for Everton Football Club.

I think I will walk down to the concourse at the 78th minute. I don't want to boo R/M if he's strill in a job and I don't want to boo the players. I'd boo Kenwright mind, as I think he's damaged this club more than anyone in the last decade and a half.

Well if we don't let this useless bastard of a board know that we as a club our not taking this shite anymore. We to will join the Barcodes and the Villa.

Craig Walker @102 Spot on Martinez must go but don't expect any new manager to turn things round completely with that squad, There's an old saying you cant make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and its never been more true than now.

Most of those players are greatly overated and I wouldnt guarantee any of them a place in the team. None of them deserve any awards which makes the players evening tomorrow a disgrace.

Fans should leave the match 5 mins from the end on Sunday and leave the ground empty for the so called lap of honour

I honestly don't know where to start. I can't remember when I last saw my team in such a mess and I've been following since 1970. I've seen some shite but never shite without a rudder. Roberto has proved himself a busted flush. He fluked the FA cup but proved how good he was by getting Wigan relegated. I can't bare the thought that he will do the same to my glorious club

I've seen a good team reduced to a bunch of absolute plonkers who find it hide to string a few passes together and move forward about as fast as an arthritic slug.

But what is to happen? In the least RM HAS TO GO!! There is no alternative! He has lost both the fans and probably the team. He disappeared down the tunnel tonight like a rat up a drain-plpe.

There are alternatives out there. Everyone is talking about them. But the most frightening thought I had tonight was that too many of our players were nowhere near good enough!!

Fucking hell!! What has this muppet done to my team! I'm really afraid for next season unless some significant changes are installed.

The next man really needs to know what our motto means. NIL SATIS NISI OPTIMO. NOTHING BUT THE FUCKING BEST IS GOOD ENOUGH!!!

Wanting El Clown out is not knee jerk - some of us have been calling for it since last January.

That said, I think the sudden push for a 'demo' smacks of being over the top - he will surely be gone as soon as it is contactually advantageous, i.e. if a break clause kicks in at the end of the season.

Call me an optimist but I feel the the squad has talent and youth. With the right manager, I think we will see the current lack of chemistry and defensive coaching quickly resolved. And if that manager is an inspirational name, known for winning - heck, the feared exodus might not be as bad as we fear (with the exception of Stones and Rom', though I'd argue that at the right price, they're replaceable). Add a few good players with Moshiri's loot and, hey-presto, we're off again.

Let's keep our heads, continue to be a positive advert for our great Club that our future manager will be impressed by, and then see where we are in the week after Norwich. If Martinez is here as we approach the transfer window, then fair enough, it will be time to kick off. But I somehow don't think he will be.

The thing is the fucking Echo is quick enough when it has anything to do across the Park but when it's us ......well let's just see how it pans out eh ?
When the Blue Union was advocating change, which now many allude too regarding Kenwright, they weren't interested.
Kenwright is the ultimate reason we are the embarrassment we are.
Had these shitholes at the Echo even given some sort of exposure to the concerns of the BU maybe, possibly, we mat not be in this situation.
The Echo is what it is, a local rag owned by a multi national that doesn't give two shits about the locals.
What really pisses me off though is that it's Everton correspondents also couldn't give a shit about its locals

By the way if I were a Norwich or Newcastle fan tonight I would be looking at taking our wasters to court on the trade descriptions act !

I don't think many on here are surprised by the result or the performance tonight, what is very surprising and disturbing is the way the collapse of the team over the last couple of months has been allowed to get worse match after match without anyone from the club doing anything about it.

Kenwright is the chairman, he has actually praised the manager and just let him carry on regardless, when all this is sorted out a lot of explaining needs to be done about what has gone on the last couple of months and why the whole situation was allowed, it is really beyond belief that it could happen at such a big business.

Ste 241, he repeated it a few years ago and a few days ago was asked about it and refused to deny it. It's his decision if he sees us as a "small club" and he's welcome to it, just as long as the fat fuck stays well away from Goodison.

No superlatives left to comment on the team and the manager. Next manager, Sam Allardyce. Why not? Sorts the defensive side out, gets them fit, gets them playing as a team. More often than not he does it with someone else's shit.

Sack Martinez and we have a full ground on Sunday, keep him and the stadium could be empty.

Saw the RM interview- he looked totally confused, mumbling about the three points and a winning feeling against Norwich on Sunday. In denial I suppose.
He needs sacking to save even more embarrassment, it is just too awful to watch him. I knew we'd lose, I said on another thread 3-1, it was obvious, with our right back problems and total lack of fight that we wouldn't be able to cope with a team in good form fighting for survival.

A few signs of fight in the last 30 mins, but far too late.

This should be the end.

I watched the post match interview on the BBC and Martinez looked resigned to losing his job following the last game of the season against Norwich. He knows he's gone and when asked about the summer all he could muster was a weak comment about the final game. I suspect that his contract will be terminated on the 1st of June and a replacement lined up and unveiled.

Andy the only reason he would manage us is that they've already got a manager and he's got a house in the area. We'd be always 2nd best in his eye's. For those reasons alone I wouldn't want him. That's even before we talk about what goes on on the pitch. Other than when they poxed the final against Milan I don't think he's been that great. Jamie Carragher should replace Graham Jones immediately, regardless of when Roberto is jettisoned. He would sort the defence out and he is still, at heart, an Evertonian. Him and Big Nev on the backroom staff, with a top coach/manager coming in would send us right back up there.

I actually feel sorry for Martinez. I couldn't fault his ambition and belief which worked in his favour in his 1st season. I never ever felt that positive being an Evertonian under Moyes reign.

Unfortunately the 1st season was the honeymoon period and once he fully integrated his rigid philosophy he was found out. He just isn't the tactical genius many of us thought he was. He should have been let go after 'the defining week'. For BK to keep this charade going for any longer is just embarrassing for all parties.

I've said on other threads in the last day or two that the problems for the new guys, Moshiri and a manager, are immense. The players are soft, have had no sort of winning mentality for years, are bereft of leaders amongst themselves, and are blatantly unfit, which in the case of the younger ones calls into question their innate aptitude to even become sufficiently fit.

So, why the hell would it be good idea to appoint such a bloke as the FSW who is already minted for life, has done everything he's ever gonna do in football, lives a stones' throw from Finch Farm. and would be over the fuckin moon to get a ginormous contract to make even his distant descendants minted for their lives, whilst all the while destroying from within the club he openly derided?

There's no guaranteed path to success but there's very clear paths to disaster and Martinez Mews is a path we've already been forced to tread in that direction. Bullshit Boulevard, Complacency Crescent, and Average Avenue are not paths we should now be seeking out as an alternative.

We need Ruthless, Rational, Relentless Road..........but does any fucker on the board know how to read the signs?

Steve Bingham
328 Posted 11/05/2016 at 23:31:29

I just hope and pray that Mr Moshiri truly understands how hugely significant he is to the future of our club and desperately wants to build a lasting legacy that starts with dragging the mindset of our board into the modern day.
This coming summer is so huge for EFC and unfortunately the responsibility rests entirely on his shoulders as we all know that the other "gentlemen" of the board can only be described as utterly spineless and totally uncaring about the club at all. There is no other conclusion (except possibly that they are only there to line their own pockets) we can arrive at by their lack of design, decision and action these past umpteen years.

Yes, most definitely Mr Kenwright should be lauded for saving us from the hamper king clown all those years ago BUT now is most definitely the time to let go and allow the biggest decisions to be made by another. We know and accept that this utter debacle cannot be solved over a few summer months but please please give us a bit of hope by showing true intent, drive and ambition and bring in a manager who at the very least will strive to shed this horrible "plucky Everton " tab and make us competitive on the park which then will give us all a bit of pride in the badge back. Over to you, Mr Moshiri!!

He should have been dismissed weeks ago. yes, that he should. It isn't for him to stand down and lose whatever the contract defines.

The man has tried his best and isn't up to it. To me he looks crushed and Kenwright shows all the compassion of a friggin mate of his who's just buggered off out the club. Martinez will only get what any one of us would expect, and that's what's in his contract.

Christy, I don't think Kenwright has any decency if it affects him whatsoever.

On behalf of Colin....

I don't know about pathetic since we are rival fans and it's kind of our job to to hurl shite at rivals whereas managers are in a privileged position and are not supposed to cross the line (thats just how it is) but find this apparent obsession with Benitez (I won't call him Rafa like he's my mate) just a bit bizarre.

Yes he's a better manager than Martinez but then I reckon I am along with Julian Clary and Barbara Cartland who is, err, still dead.

Also, you won't find mention of Benitez and Everton in the same sentence without 'small club' being in there too.

Plus he still loves them!

Can you imagine the questions around where his loyalties lie when we lose to them? Sorry just doesn't work for me. There are many equally or better candidates without the baggage Benitez brings.

Colin Glassar
339 Posted 11/05/2016 at 23:38:41
Steve, you're right the next managerial appointment is huge and I'd prefer it if Moshiri takes his time (not too long mind), draws up a short list, interviews several candidates then chooses the best one. It would be terrible if we just went out tomorrow, or next week, and got the first one available.

I know everyone is desperate for some hope but we are still only in May and this time we can't mess it up.

I would dearly love you to communicate something to show the feeling of the fans on ToffeeWeb. Look at the recent polls you have done - 90% and more of almost 20,000 votes want the manager out. We can't all be wrong! Can you call for action from the club? We need action. We need someone to pick the baton up and run with this. Someone has to be brave enough to do something. It has to be abundantly clear to the board what the next step is. Already, this has gone on way too far.

346 Posted 11/05/2016 at 00:00:38
Clive - I agree, they should part amicably now on fair terms.

If it's rumoured that we save a million by waiting until June then they should come to an agreement and if he wants to take charge of the team on Sunday he can but I think he's going to be abused if still in his post on Sunday or ridiculed if he walks us out having it announced its his last game. By the same token if he wants to hang in there for that million waiting for the push in May that's his prerogative - given he's probably already been paid over £7m already and will get more anyway. The money I'm talking about is the June money (if true).

As for lottery tickets, he came to us a rich man and has pocketed the equivalent of a few rollovers already so you won't find him in the bread line just yet.

My genuine worry is that any action is "too little too late" now.

I think there is a certain amount of damage already done that we have to take onboard going into next season, and we may possibly be looking at a season where we are fighting a relegation battle.

What ambitious, in demand, success driven manager is likely to look at a team facing an exodus of its best players who finished in the lower half (or possibly quarter) of the premier league, as a good career move?

I think the only managers that will be interested will be the ones looking at Moshiri's money and thinking they can steady a sinking ship for a large financial return.

I doubt the likes of Koeman, Bilic or Simeone would be interested in coming to Everton which is why we are hearing the likes of Benitez being mentioned.

I know it is easy for me to say over here but after the last two games and two seasons, why are people planning on showing up and then walking out at 78 minutes or even at the end of the final game? What exctly does that prove? Isn't leaving after the final whistle what happens every game? How is that a protest?

If fans want to make a statement, don't go in at all. Barring that, stay outside chanting, holding banners, etc. and then go in on 44 minutes, which is the number of points Everton has (or some other meaningful number such as number of years BK has been in charge or number of years without winning a title or perhaps a trophy, etc). Once in, by all means continue whatever chants about Martinez and Kenwright out you want.

I find it ridiculous that the "harshest" form of protest offered up is to not stay to clap the players off for the season when the main fault is really the Board, BK, and RM.

Seriously, if that is the best we can do, then save it, because BK and the Board will appreciate fans not sticking around as they can close up earlier and save wages for the cleaning crews. Then BK can turn to Moshiri and say "See, I told you it isn't Bobby, it is the players the fans are upset with" or some other such nonsense and the visible evidence will support BK as will the ticket sales next season.

Was Benitez all that wrong with his small club mentality statement ? For the past 20 years under Kenwright that is exactly what we have been. Parochial, insular and with absolutely no ambition. Martinez enjoys one good season and he is regaled with a montage akin to North Korea on the gable end of the Main Stand. We are an embarrassment, laughing stock and deserve all that we get. The drowning out of the post match protest against Bournemouth was an insult to the match going supporters who stayed behind and is added to the litany of disgraceful antics that Kenwright has presided over.

The sad thing is getting beat used to ruin my day/weekend but now the apathy has kicked in and I just shrug thinking it is another nail in the coffin so we can look for a new manager.

As an aside the players are a disgrace too. I hated United players for downing tools when OFM was in charge and I hated Chelsea players for doing the same for Maureen. It lacked professionalism.

Anthony #300, "don't humiliate him". Why the hell not when he's causing us to be humiliated as a football club every week and every time he opens his mouth? I've never seen so many posts appear so quickly on TW for as long as I can remember. We are all seeing and saying virtually the same things so why can't that bloody idiot Kenwright see it too?

Watching tonight's game was like slow torture as it became even more obvious that despite Martinez claiming the players are behind him, they really do not want to play for him. If he can't see it that makes him an even worse manager than we already know he is.

Just seen the panel on ESPN basically saying he's turned us into a carbon copy of his Wigan team and they agreed Everton are a big club but having got the jib, Martinez immediately imported four players from his relegated Wigan team.

The Everton job is too big for him and the time has come for BK to acknowledge he made a terrible mistake in hiring him by doing the right thing and firing him before he damages us even more by leading us in a headlong charge towards relegation next season.

He's already ruined my summer as I usually spend the close season eagerly awaiting the new one. Not this time, at least, not as long as Martinez is manager.

With the Norwich game now meaningless for both sides the club should fire him immediately and at least allow a little bit of atmosphere back into Goodison on Sunday as I'm sure there would be as the relief at his leaving would almost create a party atmosphere for the game. If they don't then Sunday is likely to be one horrific experience for Senor Martinez who seems to be hanging on like a bloodsucking leech with no self-respect or dignity in waiting for the inevitable axe to fall.

Whether he's there on Sunday, or given gardening leave I can't see him being sacked till after June 1st, if there is any truth in the rumours that he'll get £2 mill less compensation if sacked after that date.

I've said it on here already on here, I'm not going Sunday my seat will be empty and I won't be going back to Goodison till RM goes.

Frank De Boar left Ajax on Wednesday, a couple of days after putting himself in the frame for the Everton job, so say the DM.

A top manager who has a profile in world football and is club less wants to manage us...What is there to discuss?!?

Gordon Crawford

Going by some Ajax supporters. He is very negative and he is all about defence. Plays a 442 and is very boring to watch.

Let's get one thing straight. De Boer is a player who won everything and has started his managerial career by winning 4 league titles. The guy in a winner. He now wants to take a step up. We were listed as two clubs (by his agent) that he'd be interested in if the chance became available.

Only Evertonians could find a negative in this scenario. Are there better options? Maybe. But he is a big name who wants to compete in a bigger league. By all means Mr. De Boer. Throw your hat in the ring. It's very welcome.

loved the end of the sky interview.

When asked about Norwich, the guy asked him "Do you expect to be in charge?". RM gave an awkward smiled and said "That's not a question". Nice awkward moment!!

But it was a question numbnuts, actually you're right. Was probably a statement. Hopefully.

Our problem is that everywhere you look, we have so much talent, but for every strength each individual has, they have a weakness which is currently preventing them from being good enough.

Roberto has strengths. He is good at charming old ladies, and dancing. His weakness is in the general area of football management.

John Stones is one of the finest ball playing centre halves you could wish to see. He is also, currently, pretty bog standard when it comes to actually defending.

Phil Jagielka is a great defender, but a great inspiration, motivator and leader of men? Not so much.

James McCarthy is brilliant at chasing people around and making a nuisance of himself, but you need every midfielder to at least be capable of some forward play (even more so when you play 2 DM's), and he offers zero in this regard.

Ross Barkley is one of the most naturally gifted footballers of this generation. Sadly, he is so lacking in vision and footballing intelligence that all his dazzling skills usually go to waste due to terrible decision making. He also seems afraid to put in a tackle.

Tom Cleverley has very nice hair, but he's not great at football.

Romelu Lukaku is potentially one of the most fearsome strikers in world football. Sadly, he often looks like he really couldn't be arsed about playing for Everton.

Let's start with fixing things at the top. Afterall, a manager who isn't very good at being a manager is never going to get the very best out of his team.

Then let the new guy sort out our current bunch of mis-fits.

I still believe there is potential greatness in there somewhere. Can we find the genius who can unleash it?

Steve Bingham 381 and Jamie.

Well said , McCarthy is first and foremost, the most useless player on this squad.

Zero vision or offensive intent. I mean zero. In regards to out on the field production, he does so much to prevent us from developing effective attacking ball movement. He is the biggest on-field cancer that is contributing to killing this team's ability to produce.

I absolutely despise him.

Peter 355, spot on. Benitez is one of the top managers in the world, with a proven track record who would give us a real chance of attracting world class players and becoming a top club. You saw his impact at Newcastle in only half a dozen games.

The irony is what he said was true and the fact certain fans are now saying they don't want him here because of his past words, not his abilities as a manager, proves his point for me.

If we want to appoint a manager based on what he says rather than does, we just make exactly the same mistake as we made with Martinez.

Benetiz won't take any shit from the Board or the players, he's his own man who has backed up his words in the past with results. Steven Gerrard who I hate, but begrudgingly respect, says he was the best manager he played under but he had no close relationship with him even though he was the RS captain. That's how it should be for me between players and the manager, respect but not mates.

If he is still in situ on Sunday, I hope the stubborn arrogant ignorant fucker squirms in his technical area like I've squirmed these last few months. I hope he suffers like we've all suffered being the butt of everyone's jokes and listening to the smarm coming off those plastic so-called red fans in waves.

These two bastards, Kenwright and Martinez, have made me feel nothing but hatred towards something that, after my family, has been an integral part of my life. I feel like I've had the soul ripped out of me, watching Everton lately.

I know no team has a god-given right to win games but, as long suffering fans have a god-given right to expect nothing more than heart, fight, passion etc – something sadly that's been lacking in abundance the past few months.

If Kenwright would have done the honourable thing and sacked him, say 6 to 8 weeks ago, I sincerely believe we would have had a cup final to look forward to. As it is, it's all immaterial and all because of some ponced up luvvie who calls himself the biggest Evertonian of the lot – try telling that to the the brave lads and lasses who once again suffered having to pay to watch that last night.

Just for once, Bill, do the right thing... I'm fucking begging you.

Its staggering that even now the Martinez apologists are singling out their favourite target (Stones) for goals concede when the whole team couldnt be arsed turning up. I suspect the acute embarrassment of being so spectacularly wrong has driven them to find a new target.

These fools are the reason why the fella we want to keep will be almost certainly be gone and the clown we are desperate to get rid of, is still here.

Predictably poor last night. Interesting that plenty of the players being criticised looked good in Martinez's first season, when he played a balanced team with players who knew what they were meant to be doing.

The shambles of the last two seasons with the unbalanced team full of injured/unfit players playing out of position aren't doing these players any favours, despite their lack of application.

Before Martinez arrived, it was clear we had a large number of players about to move on or past their best. Too many of them are still here. Too many of these replacements have missed the mark. The next manager's job will be to find a way of shipping out these players and replacing them, something that Martinez has been unable to do.

Now that we allegedly have 'money', there is no need to cash in on our young talent, who will be much improved under the next manager.

Whoever we choose is going to be a gamble. For me the choice will tell us everything about how much money and ambition we now have.

I don't want Benitez, but have to agree with Peter 355, and his assessment of what Benitez, said about Everton.

We have been taken to the cleaners, and washed a whole lot of money in the process, since Kenwright, borrowed money, that he couldn't really afford to take over Everton.

If Benitez, was appointed though, it would tell me that Moshiri, was now the gaffer, because I couldn't see Rafa, putting up with Kenwright's bollocks for long!

Is De Boer really the answer? PSV have won last two Eredivisie's. Is he experienced enough or just a name? Would his style suit what we want or does he adhere to this crap possession based stuff? Can he get an unfit squad full of unmotivated players going again? I'm really not sure.
Sam Hoare
440 Posted 12/05/2016 at 10:15:06
Nick, pretty sure he adheres to the crap possession stuff.

'The build-up phase is largely based around slow-tempo rhythm from the centre-backs holding the ball until they can spot a pass higher up the field. Frank de Boer clearly prefers a possession game and extremely high amounts of interchanging and players using clever, deceptive movements in offensive transitions as well as midfield patterns and build up phase. It is fair to say that de Boer's philosophy is based on creating space and exploiting the space created.'

RM for me committed the cardinal sin; similar to Moyes going to United, of bringing unsuitable and under qualified coaching staff with him to his new club.

He's had two downward spiraling years to rectify this by bringing in a quality defensive coach and has failed to do so.

If the club have any respect for him, they should let him go now before we have another Alex Nyarko incident on Sunday.

Most hamstring strains
Most sideways passes in our half
The player managing to keep running for more than 60 minutes
The player coming out and supporting the manager in the press statement
The least time on the pitch as a substitute
The player with the most phenomenally intense display during a humiliating defeat

While all the opprobrium aimed at Martinez feels justified, I am pissed off with a bunch of players who do not look remotely arsed.

No matter how cheesed off they are with the manager - the tactics, the personnel, the formations, the subs, the media interviews... the whole pantomime... there is no justification for the lack of effort once they step on the pitch. From what I saw of the game last night (only a few minutes of each half) only Barry and Robles looked like they gave a shit, and that's unforgivable. Obviously the buck stops with the manager and I want him gone just like everyone else. But I'm kind of appalled by the players right now as well. And that's coming from an armchair fan - if I was shelling out to go to the game I'd be furious.

Nick, answer to the tempo question from my Dutch contact, Hans of the Hague, a noted student of international football and fan of Feyenoord (a real person, by the way). I asked if FDB can do fast tempo with a bit of nastiness thrown in. The answer;

We only attend awards evenings in work when we have actually achieved something worthwhile.

I am sure the TW contributors could suggest some categories such as :-
1) Most individual errors by a player leading directly to a goal.
2) Failure to beat the first man at a corner award
3) Ability to trap a ball and make it roll 20 yards award.
4)Lazy, slow, overweight midfielder award
5) Most bullshit spoken in a press conference award
6)Most passes in a direction away from the opposition goal award.
7)Best use of £13.5m award
8)Most inspiring substitution award
9)The most effective way to lose a match from a winning position award.

It will certainly be an evening of celebration.
