Tentative Everton still lack cutting edge

31 August

Everton ground out a second successive goalless draw as they again failed to turn impressive dominance into the goals needed to claim their first victory under Roberto Martinez. They were let down by typically awful refereeing by Anthony Taylor who waved away a stonewall penalty by Gary Medel on Leighton Baines, but a lack of incisiveness and directness resulted in just two real chances for Nikica Jelavic who saw a header brilliantly saved by Marshall and a stabbed effort fly over the bar.

The Blues became increasingly ragged as the game wore on and were forced into another thirty minutes where Fellaini came on as a substitute to decide the match with a close-range finish.

Toothless Not Ruthless: Everton Need Reinforcements Not Departures

24 August

Roberto Martinez is still waiting for his first victory as Everton manager following a frustrating goalless draw in his first home game in charge. Southall: Moyes and United have shown huge disrespect

22 August

Neville Southall kicks off his new blog spot for PaddyPower in typically outspoken style, having a pop at David Moyes for trying to pick up his ex-players on the cheap and the Everton Board for what he perceives as a lack of will to attract new investment.

There should be a rule brought in to stop managers who move to a new club going back to take the best players for a season. It’s like insider trading otherwise. He knows the inner workings of the club; he knows the finances and the clauses in the contracts – it’s too easy. I can see why Moyes is doing it, it’s because he trusts them, but ethically, it’s poor.

21 August

Andy Lewis argues that while David Moyes won't have sanctioned the 'embarrassingly low figure of £28million' for Fellaini and Baines, it would be naiive to think that his knowledge of Everton's finances and the nuances of the pair's contracts didn't play a role.

Roberto Martinez: A Psychological Profile

21 August

It is an extremely difficult task to apply sport psychology to a Premier League manager as they do not show weaknesses in the way players do and do not say anything without a reason, even if it wasn’t very well judged — à la Benitez’s ‘fact not an opinion’ rant. This means it can be hard to read managers. Furthermore, they see themselves as a sport psychologist, and often rightly so, but who analyses the psychoanalyst? This blog is an attempt to examine Martinez’s mind-set and the effect his psychology will have on the club.

Premier League Preview: Everton

13 August

Everton enter the 2013-14 season after an impressive 6th place finish in last year’s Barclays Premier League. Just one place shy of 5th placed Tottenham, Everton fell just short of its dreams of qualifying for Europe for the first time since 2008-09. But with only seven losses during the 2012-13 season and playing a more thoughtful style of football, Everton was a team that no one could afford to take lightly.
