Everton made comfortable work of a potentially tricky tie at Stevenage with a handsome 4-0 win but the evening was marred by a horrific injury to Bryan Oviedo. The Blues were a goal up thanks to Steven Naismith's early opener when the Costa Rican took the full force of Simon Heslop's attempted shot from distance and was stretchered off with a broken leg. Everton: Still A Decent Club In An Indecent League

22 January

A Spurs fan revisits a belief he posited a year ago – that Everton are a fundamentally decent club in an indecent League – and concludes that, if anything, his theory holds more water now under Roberto Martinez and the Blues' recent community efforts than it did before.

I’ve always had the impression, and this is obviously tinged with a purely subjective viewpoint, that Evertonians understand that football isn’t just about results or trophies or the narrowness of what happens on the pitch. There’s a very real sense that they understand that there are other, more human factors that unite us all as fans. Perhaps witnessing their neighbours suffer such unspeakable tragedy has forced them to re-evaluate the very essence of the nature of rivalry.

Maybe that’s what it is that makes Everton such a decent club. Perspective. Winning and losing make no difference in that regard. As long as the club exists and attempts to live up to its “nothing but the best” motto is all you can really ever ask of the football club. Silverware, however welcome it might be, is not the ubiquitous bottom line.

Everton granted work permit for Traoré

22 January

Lukaku support for Anelka draws criticism

22 January

Much is being made in the media of a Sky Sports interview given by Romelu Lukaku on Monday evening in which he offered support for his childhood "idol" Nicolas Anelka, not so much for the West Brom striker's controversial "quenelle" goal celebration but more for calls not to punish him harshly for what he defends as a gesture of homage to a French comedian.

"He was my idol as a kid and he still is," Lukaku said. "I don't think he should be banned for that, he was just supporting a comedian in France. We don't have to make such a big deal about it.

"I hope he doesn't get suspended because he is a player people want to play on the pitch."

Everton withdrew the video from the official website and have distanced themselves from Lukaku's comments. Far from being "in hot water", as The Express are trying to suggest, the Belgian striker, who is an ambassador for football’s anti-discrimination group Kick It Out, is likely to be spoken to but not disciplined by the club. Anelka, however, is facing a lengthy ban if the FA decide to punish him for an anti-Semitic gesture.
