Why Hodgson's mind was made up on Barkley long before his 'Rooney' moment

13 May

Tosh Farrell, the former Everton coach who helped develop Ross Barkley and Jack Rodwell talks to FourFourTwo about the former's call-up to the World Cup in Brazil.

“Ross can be anything he wants,” Farrell tells FourFourTwo. “He can play centre-midfield, he can play as a striker. He’s flying but there’s so much more improvement in him.

“He was never scared to take a chance in the game and he still makes one or two errors in the game where he gets dispossessed in vulnerable areas but the modern-day manager has to accept those mistakes because he’s the sort of lad who learns from them. “If you start telling Ross not to do things he wouldn’t be anywhere near as creative as he is.”

“Ross has really been given a licence to play and has been told to go out there and take a chance,” says Farrell. “Every game he’s building on his last one, and soon he’ll dominate midfields. The problem is that he’s a marked man, sometimes the opposition will try and stifle him so he’ll have to manage that too.”

Gareth Barry thriving at Everton

1 May

Richard Jolly analyses the impact Gareth Barry has made at Everton and ponders the possible cost to Manchester City of letting him go for this season.

The Spaniard is no stranger to superlatives, but even by his standards, he has eulogised about Barry remarkably frequently. The short-term signing, he claims, is a one-off, and he said in December: “You always find it difficult to find a No 6, that defensive midfielder who is tactically aware in the English game. Gareth has developed a continental approach in that role, and that’s quite unique. If he was a foreigner, then maybe he would be a bit more glamorous for everyone to highlight.”

His value lies not just in his rarity as a left-footer and a tactically astute Englishman. Martinez built a new midfield axis in the final hours of the September deadline day, recruiting Barry and James McCarthy while banking millions more. Their arrivals were financed by Marouane Fellaini’s sale to Manchester United. It was one final service David Moyes did to his former club.
