Brentford 1 - 1 Everton

Beto's goalscoring prowess deserted him tonight and it came down to Jake O'Brien to rescue a point at Brentford with a very fine diving header.

David Moyes makes a change with Charly Alcaraz starting for Everton, Abdoulaye Doucoure is not on the bench because his wife is having a baby but both Nathan Patterson and Youssef Chermiti make a welcome return from their respective injury absences.

The home side got the game underway, getting forward and winning an early throw-in. A long-range striker from Lewis-Potter flew past Pickford's post. Going the other way, Garner's first effort was bizarrely spooned high and wide. Mykolenko then tried to release Beto without success.

There was some decent Everton play until Gueye decided he too should try a silly shot at goal from way too far out. Gueye was fouled but the turnover was waved on by the referee. Tarkowski needlessly played the ball into touch ansd Schade drove in on goal, forcing a corner. Tarkowski redeemed himself, heading the ball clear.

Lewis-Potter caused more trouble and Schade forced another corner that required some considerable defending, Everton penned back.  Branthwaite triued to release Mykolenko but he completely mishit the ball and The Bees surged forward, Branthwaite saving a corner at the expense of a throw-in.

Brentford eventually worked the ball well to the far post but Wissa could only head into Pickford's grateful hands.  The Blues finally got forward but Mykolenko was denied possession.

A great turnover and Alcaraz drove forward, Lindstrom crossing, but it flew over Beto and Alcaraz could do nothing with it at the far post. Schade almost stole the ball off O'Brien. But Everton were getting a lot more of the forward play although Beto had no real chance to convert a difficult volley.

Ajer did well to stop Harrison overlapping, but Alcaraz did not control the ball well. A nice move into the Brentford area saw an interesting backheel from O'Brien that was unfortunately wayward.

Brentford worked another forae forward; more firm defensive work was required, with Mbeumo putting in a tempting cross toward the far post.

A Harrison cross to O'Brien seemed to be a good set-up for Beto coming in but he was rather easily put off by the defender. End-to-end and Brenftford couldn't quite shape the shit before Beto gets away from Pinnock but one-on-one, he makes it far too easy for Flekken to snatch the ball.

Brentford attacked again but the Blues cleared the ball and Collins wellied high and wide. Beto again got free one-on-one again after a very smart header forward by Alcaraz but this time his shot hit Flekken's arm and got just enough of a deflection to touch it past the post.

From the corner, there was a nasty clash of heads between Mbeumo and Alcaraz, with the Everton man flat out — but eventually both were able to run off for the enforced (ridiculous!) 30-second sin-bin on the sideline.

Wissa was given space to shoot but Pickford palmed it away. But from the long throw-in bounced before Mbeumo was allowed to head it onto the bar and Wissa easily nodded the falling ball over the line.

Really a shocking goal for the Blues to give up on the verge of half-time as Alcaraz shows he too can shoot stupidly from a ridiculous distance away from goal.

O'Brien won an early corner after the restart, the brilliant delivery from Harrison almost going straight in before it hit O'Brien on the line — who seemed to have no idea what just happened!

Everton had some possession but just allowed themselves to be pushed all the way back to Pickford. Lindstrom crossed in, then the ball fell at Alcaraz's feet but he could not react and the ball came out to Garner who decided he too should show everyone how badly he could shoot.

O'Brien was very strong competing with Schade and incorrectly winning a corner. Harrison's corner this time was pitiful as the referee saw an infringement by the attacking side.

The hour-mark approached as Everton tried but failed to work an opening, Moyes with very little on the bench to affect the outcome. Harrison's cross was deflected into Flekken's hands. Another Harrison cross was delivered too close to Flekken.

Lindstrøm was bundled over by Lewis-Potter, but Pickford's free-kick soon came right back to him. Gueye Lindstrom and Beto tried an intricate move through the middle that broke down. Mykolenko was next to cross straight to Flekken.

Lewis-Potter got a good cross past O'Brien to the far post but Pickford was there for the following header.  Garner and Harrison did well to let Alcaraz work a dangerous shot that flew just wide.

Alcaraz drove forward with in tent but rather generously played it to Harrison, whose low shot was well blocked. by Ajer. Alcaraz tried another shot from way out that bobbled wide.

Brentford seemed to just walk through the Everton defence for Wissa to score his second but thankfully it was flagged offside. A Brentford free-kick was headed wide. Then Tarkowski almost got into trouble. Brentford built again but were repelled, with Everton failing to really threaten as Moyes finally made some changes on 75 minutes.

But with very little seemingly happening, Mykolenko picked out the giant O'Brien who stooped to conquer with a fine header that flew past Flekken. That goal certainly enlivened the pace of what had been a flat game at times, both sides now determined to find a winner.

Everton had a good spell with the ball, Brentford on the back foot. It was then Everton's turn to defend until they forced a break, Alcaraz stretching as he fired the ball at Flekken.

Brentford looked to have fashioned a dangerous chance but again Everton turned iit over and Beto was again put through one-ono-one but agin Flekken got a hand to his attempted lob.

It led to a couple of corners and again a wayward shot from Alcaraz ended the move. Beto was body-checked by Collins, winning a late free-kick but Harrison's ball in evaded Tarkowski at the far post.

Iroegbunam wins a throw-in by the corner flag but Wissa heads it clear. Everton trie to get the ball up to Beto again in the last minutes but it would not fall for him.

Brentford had a late throw-in of their own that saw O'Brien edge his man aside, screams for a home penalty waived away, and that's how it ended.

Must be a forced change, be nice to have a nice lead and bring on chermiti & Patterson.

Chance for Charly to force himself in to the side permanently.

1-0 Alcaraz!!!

Is Doucoure injured? Pity cos he was just coming back to form and scoring goals.

Let's hope Charly is my darling and lasts the 90-plus minutes.

Doucoure not even on bench. Deffo forced change, must have the shits from Lindstrom last week.

Good line-up.

A real shame after they had defended every other attack very well. Beto at fault for misjudging the long throw and letting it drop behind him. That plus his missed chances. Should be 0-3 but it's 1-0.

But what is it with these ridiculous shots not on goal?

Everton looked a bit lethargic, almost just sitting back as there seemed to be little movement in midfield or out wide for that matter and it all seemed too slow but then Beto was put through and just as I thought, "He doesn't miss these", he did… and then did it again a few minutes later.

Then we give away a soft goal from a long throw-in for which nobody seemed to want to challenge. Brentford just seem to be quicker, better organized and not without a bit of skill and Moyes will earn his money sorting this out at halftime.

Beto could've had 3; poor finishing – that's being kind.

Full backs and wingers giving us nothing going forward.

COYB!

A good point on the road. Alcaraz has to become a permanent addition, what an agressivenes and understanding of the game he has.

If Beto should’ve passed that we would have won it.

Great point and still moving forward.

Just a pity about some poor crosses.

Brentford seemed to catch Everton's lethargy in the second half as their play was a lot slower than they showed in the first half.

From the corner it looked like Lindstrom stopped it going into the net. And who said Mykolenko can't cross a ball as O'Brien gets his first. Beto spoils his reputation by missing a third one on one chance with their keeper.

A game which could have gone either way and without either team looking like they wanted it a draw seems a fair result as Mr Moyes effect continues.

Oh, and a final word, the Ref had a good game but what is the point of Linesmen if they won't flag offside until VAR tells them to.

Good point away from home. Thought we were the better side. Beto was wasteful but at least we are getting men forward and showing some attacking intent.

A draw on the road, another point toward the 40. Now unbeaten in seven league games (don't mention the FA Cup!) but it still feels like a win that wasn't with those chances Beto had.

No doubt we'll be told that they weren't really chances, that no-one could have scored them.

Well, there is one player I know who certainly couldn't!

Good performance and a handy result away against a useful side. Beto didn't score but the keeper made some good saves. The three CBs, Charly and Gana all had very good games. I thought.

We will get better with a bit of a rest and troops coming back, on this form we will be soon in the top half.

We looked out of sorts first half but were much more on it in the second.

You could argue that Beto should've scored all three of his chances but the keeper did well each time and the effort that caught Flekken under the arm could easily have gone in.

O'Brien and Tarks were immense and we looked the most likely to score a winner. And I'm gonna say it: we're now safe. 15 points and massively superior GD.

We failed to score in 8 out of Dyche's last 10 league games. We've scored in 7 out of 8 of Moyes league games.

Obviously, Beto finding form prior to this game helped but getting goals from set pieces and people following up on loose balls have also helped. This was basic stuff we'd stopped doing for whatever reason under Dyche.

As to the performance tonight, it was a bit below par but games are coming thick and fast for our threadbare squad so it is not surprising to see a bit of lethargy creeping in.

24 Posted 26/02/2025 at 21:42:14
When you think of what a run-of-the-mill squad we have, and that we've had to cope with 10 injuries, the level of performance after what has gone on is quite remarkable.

The team that is third from bottom needs now to make up 16 points on us, so we're up basically.

Dave Abrahams
25 Posted 26/02/2025 at 21:44:16
Well it was another game where the result stops any real criticism with the squad we have at the moment, poor defending by the full back for their goal but he redeemed himself with a well-taken equaliser.

I don't think we deserved to win but we had some good chances and Brentford didn't deserve to win either so I'd say
I'm happy with another point which makes it almost certain we can relax for another season.

James Garner was the MotM for me.

Good point on the road against a decent Brentford side and, given Beto's opportunities, we were unfortunate not to score more than one.

You could see within 15 minutes that there wasn't much sharpness, not much snap in the legs. Too many games in too short a time with too few healthy players. This was a point from raw grit. Congratulations to Jake on popping his Everton cherry.

Strongly dispute the criticism of Beto... their keeper did very well, that last chip was bound for the top corner if not for a great save, the pass to Alcaraz was NOT on, and Charly's tantrum was less than seemly.

Well, my expectations have certainly changed since the arrival of Moyes.

I thought we threw away 2 points against Man Utd and I am really disappointed we didn't win tonight. Beto had four chances, two of which he really should have scored.

Two points from two games with a depleted squad is better than zero points – but it should have been six.

Harsh headline and some comments harsh on Beto. The third chance was a great save by their keeper.

Good overall performance by us, I wish we had more options off the bench.

In my opinion, with the number of injuries we have coupled with the amount of games played this month, that was a fine performance by the lads.

Well done Moyes and the team, a never-say-die attitude.

Beto made it easy for the keeper with the last 2 chances. For the first one, who knows what he was trying? To go around the the keeper if I was to guess.

At that level, he has to score at least one.

The only time Mykolenko produced a little bit of quality and our other fullback popped up with a fantastic header, but otherwise there was very little on offer coming from either flank.

A gritty performance, you can see Beto's shortcomings but, he also gave us an outlet and is becoming a real handful to play against, and I'm sure the goals will continue if he keeps getting in areas that will always give him chances and he gets back to keeping the ball on the floor!

The best thing about tonight was that I'm no longer exasperated when I watch us and you can slowly begin to see the players gaining confidence. The rest should do us good and hopefully a few players are fit for the Wolves game in ten days time

We definitely deserved to win tonight, but equalising 13 minutes from the end, I'm delighted with the point.

Beto's first two chances one one-on-one, he should have scored, the last chance wasn't easy, but I can't fault his effort.

The 10-day break is badly needed, and hopefully we'll have more players back before Wolves.

Clearly safe now, and I expect us to put up more points that's remaining.

Given the circumstances along with a bit of a frightening bench, this was a good point and well deserved. I pray Beto takes confidence from his movement to get into position to take those chances and gives their keeper the praise he thoroughly deserved.

If Leicester don't win tomorrow, it will be the final confirmation we will be in BMD as a Premier League club next season, even if it is all but certain now anyway.

Thank you, Mr Moyes – take a bow.

Good second half anyway, we looked the more likely to win it by the end.

Oh for a game changer on the bench. Shame about Beto not converting, but he's already scored more one one-on-ones in the past month than Calvert-Lewin probably ever will, so I'm willing to cut him some slack.

Overall, a good away point, especially coming from behind.

Well said, Paul @39.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think we'd be more or less safe when not even out of February.

What a job the manager has done and I never doubted for one minute tonight that we wouldn't score.

I would never have said that under the other clown because, as soon as Wissa scored, that would have been game over under him.

Yes, Beto missed great chances tonight but let's credit him for the ones he's stuck away lately.

On another night, at least one goes in but the keeper made 2 good saves so let's not be too harsh.

As I said when he come back, I can't remember having too many sleepless nights when he was here last time. I couldn't say that under The Waiter, Frank, and Him who I can't mention.

Thanks, David and his threadbare squad, for giving us back our pride... at least for this season.

I just watched the 'misses'. Very few strikers have the pace and power to even get themselves into position. Hard lines with all of them, not like Calvert-Lewin, who finishes like a centre-half.

We've got an excellent striker here. and their centre-half should have been sent off for the first one, took Beto out.

Great header from O’Brien for his first Everton goal - No one more disappointed than Beto with those three misses one on one - 1-1 not bad unbeaten in 7 league matches - so confidence may be dented but things have been going better since Moyes return - long may it continue and those chances if given again Beto and Alcaraz will put those away 💙

We didn't play that bad, or that well either, Beto could've won it for us.
Yet we fail to defend the basic agricultural long throw.

O'Brien took his goal well and Moyes continues to confound his critics, of which I am one...but so far on a game by game basis he's doing OK, so fairplay to him.

10 (?) days off now to rest a day regroup.

When draws go from being 1pt gained to feeling like 2pts lost we must be doing something right.

Another good point, we are best priced at 100/1 to be relegated now but I think that should be 10,000/1.

The little fat southern bbc match commentator whos name escapes me always says - he should scored - every time a player has not even a half chance which always causes me to utter an expletive.
They are all easy from the side-lines.

From all the chances that Beto Had, I thought the best option, was after he got tripped, when he got up, he could have taken a couple of touches, composed himself and chipped the Keeper, who had well advanced off his line.
But, it’s great to see him getting into these positions.
His XG has gone trough the roof, since our ex manager headed off, with his Bag of Swag.
Wasn’t he once a big fan of the XG factor?

Ian we might prefer that Leicester get at least a point tomorrow to keep West Ham below us too.

Thought Beto did well to get onto those chances with pace and strength but was generally not getting much service and very little support.

The first one he tried to go around the keeper but being young and agile the keeper thwarted him, 1-0 to the keeper, the second one he tried to put away early on the ground and again the keeper got a touch to get it just around the post, the 3rd one he tried to loop over the keeper who managed the faintest of touches to again get it over the woodwork.

Thought our MF was tremendous today with special mention for Charly, Garner and Gana Gueye.

The flanks not so good with poor crosses and weak defending at times particularly our left flank which needs a boost in the summer.

As an ex goalie though guys surely Pickford has to come and claim the ball after the ball has bounced in th six yard box. He does not command his area enough.

This was an excellent performance.

We gave as good as we got, at the very least. Beto could have scored, of course. But their goalie understood that he prefers to hit the ball to the keeper’s left, anticipated and saved. Or, in the first instance, made him go the wrong way. Excellent goalkeeping.

We fully deserved O’Brien’s well taken equaliser.

And, of course, cautious Moyes settled for the point. Or, rather, he didn’t - he absolutely went for the win, despite his very limited options from the bench.

We're disappointed not to win away to Brentford. The team that we played out a bore draw against just a couple of months ago (against 10 men at home).

If you compare those two matches it's night and day. We showed precisely zero bravery in that first match and they were booed off the pitch. Tonight we had chances and the equaliser came from both full backs in the final third.

I'm not even too disappointed in Beto. He didn't do too much wrong for the second two chances. For the first one I don't think he ever quite regained his composure after the initial challenge.

The Charly/Beto combination looks like it's got legs. Charly can be a bit hungry (and he wasn't happy with Beto taking a shot) but I like his attitude. He looks nailed on right now to be a permanent deal.

By the way, a little bit of fortune for our equaliser as I thought there was a late challenge before the ball turned over. Referee looked like he put the whistle to his mouth and then changed his mind.

Mind you I also thought Gueye was fouled in the build up to their offside goal.

No complaints at all from me. We're playing out mid table fixtures now, the team is running on fumes, the matches have been coming twice a week, and yet we keep seeing the same drive and commitment right to the end of matches.

Finally witnessing my Everton. Thank God we made that change. It was sucking the life out of me.
